Motivational InterviewingThis training will provide an overview of motivational interviewing and techniques to use with clients. Through motivational interviewing, attendees can expect to facilitate meaningful conversations with clients that engage inherent motivations to change their behavior.

HIV & Viral HepatitisThis update will examine the co-infection of HIV and Viral Hepatitis. According to the CDC, about 25% of persons living with HIV are co-infected with Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) and about 10% are co-infected with Hepatitis B (HBV). This update will also provide information on the Hepatitis A (HAV) outbreak in Southeastern Michigan and discuss ways in which local health departments and community partners can provide awareness to deliver effective services to co-infected clients.

Let’s Talk About SexDuring this training, we will work on looking at our own views around sex and how they impact the work we do. Additionally, we will work on developing our own lens of sex positivity and how we can continue to expand it beyond the classroom.

Cultural ProficiencyDeveloping Cultural Competency from the Inside Out
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), Health Disparities Reduction and Minority Health Section (HDRMHS) is offering a two-day cultural proficiency workshop. The training will provide participants with a framework for cultural competency development and apply it to personal, organizational, and community change. Learn about developing authentic and sustainable community partnership across differences, explore issues of power, oppression, privilege, and change at four levels – personal, interpersonal, institutional and cultural, and create a common language related to issues of diversity, equity, and social justice.

Mental Health First AIDThis update will introduce participants to risk factors and warning signs of mental illnesses, build understanding of their impact, and overview common supports. This training will use role plays and simulations to demonstrate how to offer initial help in a mental health crisis and connect persons to the appropriate professional, peer, social, and self-help care. The training will also teach common risk factors and warning signs of specific types of illnesses, such as anxiety, depression, substance use, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia.

Human Trafficking: A Michigan RealityThis update will take a look inside the issue of human trafficking in Michigan, which ranks number two in the country for the highest rates of human trafficking sex trade. Participants will learn the myths of trafficking and the social ramifications, identify the health needs of multiple stages of victims of trafficking, and explore how to collaborate in addressing the need of support for victims.

Trans* 102: Advanced Trans* CareWorking with trans* clients can present a unique set of circumstances compared to their cisgender counterparts. Perinatal HIV Prevention Service Coordination
This update will look at missed opportunities with pregnant women living with HIV in Michigan, as well as what services pregnant women or those planning on becoming pregnant may benefit from. Participants will also learn about the updated testing recommendations for HIV, syphilis, and Hepatitis B with regard to perinatal care.

2018 Counseling, Testing, and Referral (CTR) Module Trainings

Module 2: HIV Prevention Specialist TrainingModule 2 is a one-day, in-person course. It is designed to provide analysis of possible external and internal socioeconomic, cultural, and social factors a client may experience. Upon completion of the module, participants should be able to facilitate client-centered prevention counseling, understand how external and internal factors can affect a client’s behavior, and offer a variety of prevention options based on the client’s needs.
Trainings occur throughout the year in Lansing, Detroit, Grand Rapids, and Traverse City. Please check the calendar for more information. Registration closes two weeks prior to the training date.
Pre-requisites: Successful completion of Module 1.
Intended Audience: Any local health department and/or agency staff and volunteers who may be conducting HIV counseling and/or testing.

Module 3: HIV Prevention and Test Counselor Certification Training
Module 3 is a two-day, in-person course. Participants will receive the fundamental elements of delivering negative, positive and indeterminate/invalid test results, PrEP, linking clients to care, and initiating Partner Services (PS) information. Upon completion of the module, participants should be able to understand and explain test results, provide PrEP referral options, and link clients to care and PS.
Trainings occur throughout the year in Lansing, Detroit, Grand Rapids, and Traverse City. Please check the calendar for more information. Registration closes two weeks prior to the training date.
Pre-requisites: Successful completion of Modules 1 and 2.

Partner Services (PS) Certification TrainingThe two-day Partner Services Certification Training for Local Health Departments is designed to familiarize staff with a number of strategies to control and prevent the spread of HIV and other STDs. Utilizing the updated “Recommendations for Conducting Integrated Partners Services for HIV/STD Prevention”, participants will learn about program policy and practices for conducting PS activities. Emphasis will be placed on techniques for working with individuals diagnosed with HIV and other STDs to identify their at-risk partners so prevention counseling, testing, and referral services can be provided. Participants will learn skills to conduct thorough field investigations and techniques for personal safety. In addition, participants will learn skills to enhance the delivery of partner services.

CM Training – Part 1: Fundamentals of HIV Case Management
This training will focus on the State of Michigan Standards of Care for Medical Case Managers to ensure the quality and consistency of delivering HIV services across the State of Michigan. This training will include interactive components, such as discussions, activities, and quizzes.

CM Training – Part 2: Medication AdherenceThis training will review current recommendations for antiretroviral therapy and examine emerging and newly-approved HIV Medications. It will also cover the impact of adherence and resistance on the clinical management of HIV, will introduce adherence counseling techniques, and have interactive components.

CM Training – Part 3: Case Management Resources
This training will cover necessary resources for case managers to help meet the needs of their clients. The day will include overviews of and instructions for the Michigan Drug Assistance Program (MIDAP), Michigan Dental Program (MDP), Premium Assistance (PA), Insurance Assistance Program (IAP) and Human Services, Affordable Care Act (ACA), Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), and Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA).
