UL Interaction Design Centre - Integrating technical & human/social perspectives
• People-centred ICT design & use
• Human, social, organizational, & technical factors
• Information “ecologies” , not simply systems
• Designing ICT artefacts & infrastructures
• Quality….. in Use (user expectations,experiences)
• Technology as mediator in human activities..emphasis on human activities, history, (Marx, Vygotsky)
• The work required to make things work- infrastructures, facilitation, org. culture...
• New media design - user experience, play

IDC Research Themes• Materiality of Objects – the central role of material artefacts • Human Activity – a fundamental aspect of human being in the world• Engagement – the need to excite, motivate, enhance the user
experience• Interaction – human play with objects being seen as a narrative
activity, not simple action-reaction (mouse event – action) pairs• Multimodality – incorporating several sensory modalities – visual,
tactile, kinaesthetic, sonic, auditory• Sociality – creating artefacts or assemblies of artefacts that allow for
or encourage collaborative activity• Computer as an augmentation tool – not a substitute for existing
practices
• HEA/MLE Z-Tiles/SOS (12/02)• EU DC SHAPE (6/04)• EI VisiBreath (9/04)• SFI NomadS (10/06)• SFI Shared Worlds (10/07)• SFI socGSD (10/08)• EI IMS-ARCS (06/09) • Leonardo da Vinci MedCap (10/09)• PRTLI FUTURE COMM(10/11)• PRTLI NOMADIC WORK/LIVES(10/12)

Towards a Human-Centred Computing?
• Understanding the everyday world of human activity• Understanding human practices• Computing - as a human activity• Artefacts as mediators in human activity• Ubiquitous computing, sensors, infrastructures• Novel interaction paradigms
– (e.g. haptic interfaces, multimodality, performance)
We need to explore the design space where we do not MODEL the user!
Technology as a means to an end, not an end in itself…
