PEP Filters continues to lead the industry in the design and manu-facture of the most rugged, reliable and efficient automatic equip-ment for filtration and separation. The InterSeptor CentrifugalSeparator style ICS2 continues in this tradition. Our ICS2Separators are available as stand alone units or skid mounted sys-tems (ICS2-TCP). The ICS2 is effective in removing suspendedparticles 40 micron and larger from a flow stream. Depending onthe specific gravity of the particle and the viscosity of the carrierfluid retention as small as 5 microns is possible.

In keeping with our innovative leadership position and firm commitment to providing efficient and cost effective filter solu-tions, the InterSeptor® Series Centrifugal Separator (“ICS2”) is thenewest addition to our diverse product line. Available in manysizes, please feel free to contact your PEP sales engineer for application assistance. Our goal is to provide system matchedliquid/solids separation and filtration products that meet or

    exceed your system requirements.

HOW IT WORKSThe ICS2 is a simple mechanical device that uses the principleof centrifugal force and friction to cause the separation of

suspended solids from liquids. It is a device with no movingparts, has no media and operates effectively for years without

    any required maintenance.

The liquid enters on a tangential inlet port (1) where the veloci-ty is increased by an internal acceleration ring.(2) As the fluidspins through the separation chamber (3) the centrifugal forcecaused by the acceleration ring forces the suspended particlesto the outer wall of the separation chamber. (4) The separatedparticles then slide down the outer wall to the collection cham-ber while the carrier fluid undergoes a 270 degree change ofdirection (5) by the direction plate causing further and moreefficient separation while the vortex breaker (6) allows the sus-pended particles to settle in the collection chamber. (7)Toremove the solids, a continuous purge can be utilized. Anautomatic timed purge can be used as well based on twoparameters intervals between purges and purge length.

In addition there are several options for further cleaning andreusing the purge fluid.

WHAT PARTICLE SIZE WILL ICS2 REMOVE?The ICS2 is effective at removing suspended particles largerthan 40 microns from a variety of fluids. Removal of particlesas small as 5 microns is possible for denser materials (Seetable). Particle removal performance is improved when usedin multiple-pass arrangement.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING A CENTRIFUGALSEPARATORMany factors contribute to the efficiency of a centrifugal separator. These include:

Efficient liquid/solid sepa-ration depends on cen-trifugal force. Since thecentrifugal force in theseparator is dependent onvortex velocity, and vortexvelocity is directly propor-tional to flow rate, it isimportant to match yourflow rate requirements tothe appropriate ICS2model. The following tableshows recommended ICS2models for the indicatedflow ranges.

PARTICLE AND FLUID DENSITYIt is important to note that the density (specific gravity) of theparticles to be removed must be greater than the density ofthe fluid. The greater the difference in density, the higher theremoval efficiency. The table lists densities (specific gravity)of several common particles removed from water (specificgravity of water is 1).

    INTERSEPTOR CENTRIFUGAL SEPARATION SYSTEMS

ICS2-TCPThe ICS2-TCP is a skid mounted pre-engineeredseparation package that is completely self con-tained and requires only utility (Fluid Inlet/ Outlet,Purge and Electrical) connections for installation. The Tower Clean Package includes a Separator, manual purge valve, PEP BGFS-100 reclaim filter,PVC face piping, manual service valve, cast ironpre-strainer on system matched bronze fitted closecoupled centrifugal pump, all skid mounted on anepoxy coated carbon steel base and controlled by aNEMA 4X control panel.

PURGE OPTIONSThe ICS2 is designed to remove suspended solidsfrom a flow stream and collect them in a collectionchamber. Periodic purging of the collection chamberwill be required for removal of the collected contam-inant. This can be accomplished several ways:

Continuous BleedThis is where a manual valve is opened to allowless than 1% of the design flow rate to continuous-ly bleed from the system to drain. This bleed willresult in the solid contaminant being removed fromthe system.

Manual PurgeSimilar to the continuous purge where a manualvalve is opened to purge the contaminant from the collection chamber.

Automatic PurgeThis is an automated system where a control panelis utilized to operate an electrically actuated ballvalve to accomplish a purge. The control has twooperating parameters, interval between purges andthe duration of the purge itself. Typically a systemwill work very well purging once every 4 hours for10-15 seconds.

APPLICATIONS- Nozzle protection- Mechanical seal protection- Increased efficiency on heat exchanger surfaces- Cooling tower water filtration, chemical reduction

in treatment, increased efficiency- Plant influent process water filtration- Pre-filtration for bag, cartridge, screen, sand

    filters and centrifuges

TCP Auto Purge: “TCP” designates Tower Clean Package – Includes skid mounted separator, electrically actuated bronze 2-way purge valve, pump and bag filter (purge recovery vessel). Separator purge interval* and duration** times are field adjustable. Filtered liquid from bag filter flows to suction side of pump.

*Purge interval: The time between each purge (0.24 to 24 hours)

**Duration: The time that the purge valve remains open (0.6 to 60 seconds)

On Separator Models 0300 and larger…

RL: Removable Lid – The separator top is removable on models 0300 and larger

NRL: Non-Removable Lid – The separator top is permanently welded to the separator body

(all separators smaller than model 0300 have non-removable top)

Note: Some manufacturers incorporate “acceleration slots” inside the separator to facilitate solids separation. Performance is enhanced marginally at best, and the slots may be susceptible to clogging. This is what drives their need to offer removable lids. PEP’s separator design does not require acceleration slots .
