General Studies or Liberal Arts & Science?Select the degree program that is right for you based on your goals at Tunxis Community College. If you are considering General Studies or Liberal Arts & Science read the information below and meet with an advisor to ensure it is the best fit.

General Studies

The General Studies Degree Program is for students who wish to take a breadth of courses in a number of different fields and disciplines. Over the years, many students have enrolled in the General Studies program to find out which areas of study interest them most. That student who has not been in school for many years and is looking for a change of career might find General Studies to be the perfect program.

At the same time, General Studies can be the ideal program for someone who has an idea of what their major will be at a four-year school or their career path. The program has 12 general electives in which students can take any number of courses across the college curriculum; these courses can be used as an area of concentration that serves as the foundation for their future major at a four-year school.

Students are strongly encouraged to speak to their advisors to dispel common misconceptions about the program. General Studies is not merely a major for students who do not know what they want to do with their college experience. It should not be considered a default program before students decide which program they will choose eventually at the community college level. Finally, General Studies, like all other programs, requires consistent advising. Students are discouraged from figuring out their career paths on their own without good, solid, and frequent communication with their advisor.

Liberal Arts & Science

The Liberal Arts & Science Degree Programs include all the traditional academic disciplines, such as anthropology, art, biology, chemistry, English, history, math, and physics. The LA&S programs are designed for the student planning on transferring to a four-year school to complete their bachelor’s degree. It is definitely the major to select if you are planning to transfer to UConn, University of Saint Joseph, Trinity, or any other college/university.

The LA&S programs have been constructed to allow a graduating student to transfer to a four-year institution as a junior with few if any general education or lower-level courses in their major to make up. Advisors work diligently with students to tailor their choice of electives to match the requirements of their intended transfer school. LA&S offers two degrees, the associate in arts and associate in science. The only difference between the two is the associate in arts option requires foreign language courses.
