REFLECTION: May 31, 2020

Pentecost Sunday Just as Jesus was anointed with the Spirit at the begin-ning of his ministry, so the disciples needed the anointing of the Holy Spirit to carry out the mission entrust-ed to them by Jesus. The Holy Spirit is given to all who are baptized into Jesus Christ to enable us to live a new way of life - a life of love, peace, joy, and righteousness (Romans 14:17). The Holy Spirit fills our hearts with the love of God (Romans 5:7), and he gives us the strength and courage we need in order to live as faith-filled disci-ples of the Lord Jesus. The Spirit helps us in our weak-ness (Romans 8:26), and enables us to grow in spiritual freedom - freedom from doubt, fear, and from slavery to our unruly desires (2 Corinthians 3:17; Romans 8:21). The Spirit instructs us in the ways of God, and guides us in living according to God's will. The Spirit is the source and giver of all holiness. Isaiah foretold the seven-fold gifts that the Spirit would give: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord (Isaiah 11:2).

Así como Jesús fue ungido con el Espíritu al comienzo de su ministerio, los discípulos necesitaban la unción del Espíritu Santo para llevar a cabo la misión que Jesús les había confiado. El Espíritu Santo es dado a todos los que son bautizados en Jesucristo para permitirnos vivir una nueva forma de vida: una vida de amor, paz, alegría y justicia (Romanos 14:17). El Espíritu Santo llena nues-tros corazones con el amor de Dios (Romanos 5: 7), y nos da la fuerza que necesitamos para vivir como discí-pulos llenos de fe del Señor Jesús. El Espíritu nos ayuda en nuestra debilidad (Romanos 8:26), y nos permite crecer en libertad espiritual - libertad de la duda, el miedo y la esclavitud al pecado (2 Corintios 3:17; Roma-nos 8:21). El Espíritu nos instruye en los caminos de Dios y nos guía a vivir según la voluntad de Dios. El Espí-ritu es la fuente y el dador de toda santidad. Isaías pre-dijo los siete dones que el Espíritu daría: sabiduría, en-tendimiento, consejo, fortaleza, ciencia, piedad y temor a Dios (Isaías 11: 2).
