What did we create and why is this important?

• Standardized and summative assessment data can only provide a limited picture of

student needs. In order to gain a more complete picture of the student, the teacher

needs formative assessment data, both quantitative and qualitative, that can be

recorded on the fly. At this point, there is no one-stop-shopping way of doing that.

• This problem potentially impacts all students in all classrooms; in terms of teacher

cost, it is negligible in terms of dollars, but can impact the teacher up to ten hours per

week

• An interactive seating chart allows teachers to:

– input student data in the form of assessment scores, observations and needs

– access student data (grade book, standardized scores, demographic information)

– see (at-a-glance) the RtI status of students in the class

– connect students to specific interventions

• Teachers need an application on a mobile device that will allow them to easily access

and input data in a seating chart format.

How did we validate the problem?

Research:

• Interviewed both teachers and administrators in elementary and high schools

Key Findings:

Both teachers and administrators have complained about…

• the time taken to enter data in non-electronic form, and then re-entering that data into

a data base outside of class time

• data that has been lost or missed due to not having an immediate system in which to

record the data

Leveraging SLC

How SLC was used to bring the solution together:

• The connective aspect of SLC allows the opportunity for teachers to pull and enter

data in one place, even if it is ultimately housed in different systems.
