In order to guarantee supply safety, profitability and sustainability, decentralized energy systems must be intelligently and efficiently controlled and connected with each other. Energy management systems significantly help to enhance efficiency and save energy, to raise the on-site consumption of self-generated energy, and to ease the burden on the power grids. Brazil has extensive opportunities for energy efficiency. According to the Energy Research Company, the country could save about 23 TWh by 2020. The analysts estimate a volume of about US$260 billion for the Brazilian energy efficiency market in the same period.

Flexibly operated cogeneration systems will ideally complement the fluctuating supply of renewable energy from photovoltaics and wind.
