General Questions• What is a Replaceable Lid?
− Replaceable Lids is one of the many, new, innovative features of the 5th-generation NUCs launching in 2014. Replaceable Lids allow easy NUC customization by simply removing the factory lid and snapping on a new one.
• Why do NUCs now have Replaceable Lids?
− Intel® has listened to requests from users, resellers, and third-party manufacturers for the NUC to have aftermarket customizability, whether functional or cosmetic. Replaceable Lids is the first step in meeting those requests, without unnecessarily increasing cost, or providing features with limited appeal.
• Which NUCs support Replaceable Lid?
− Maple Canyon, Rock Canyon, and Pinnacle Canyon all support Replaceable Lid and share the same exact mechanical interface.
• Who will be providing Replaceable Lids?
− Only third party manufacturers outside of Intel® will be providing Replaceable Lids.
• What are examples of Replaceable Lids?
− Cosmetic Replaceable Lids are simply shot is different colors or have custom artwork/logos -, without adding features. Functional Replaceable Lids can add features such as more NFC, USB 2.0 ports, VGA, RS232C COM ports, SDXC card reader, 4G/LTE, IoT hub, etc. There is virtually no limit to what can be done with Replaceable Lids.
• What level of industry enablement is Intel doing?
− Intel has worked with standard lid provider to support alternate colors/designs.
− Intel has worked with supplier of I/O expansion lid on upfront tooling.
− Intel has done some prototype work on wireless charging and NFC modules and has shared info with potential suppliers..

Techie Questions• What signal connectors are available for Replaceable Lid designs?
− Maple Canyon provides internal connectors for NFC and 2x USB ports
− Rock and Pinnacle Canyon NUCs also provide NFC, 2x USB ports, but also has an AUX_PWR connector
• How do I design around the NUC’s built-in WiFi antennas?
− Replaceable Lids must not be metallic, and manufacturers should avoid placing PCBs, cables, or connectors over the WiFi antennas. The only exception is if the Replaceable Lid design has additional antennas or external antenna connectors explicitly designed in, replacing the NUC’s factory WiFi antennas
• How do I design around the Power Button and HDD LED?
− Replaceable Lids must either be able to re-use the factory Power Button and HDD LED lightpipe, or provide new functionally similar ones (ie. same feel and lightpipe characteristics).
− If supported by the specific NUC (meaning the NUC has an easily-accessible Front Panel header) a different option is to provide a wired Power Button and HDD LED with the 3rd-party Replaceable Lid.
• Can a Replaceable Lid design make use of other internal NUC headers (eDP, CSH, COM, etc…)?
− Because of the locations of those other headers on the NUC board, and the very tight space for cable routing, it is not recommended to use other internal headers for Replaceable Lid designs. Those additional headers were intended for use when the NUC board is installed in a different, roomier chassis.
• Can I “3D-print” my own Replaceable Lid?
− Yes you definitely can! Simply download the detailed Replaceable Lid files from the Intel® NUC website and customize the design any way you wish.
• Where can I find detailed engineering drawings, connector specs, pinouts, and 3-D files?
