The receptors send messages to the brain, where the brain interprets the messages as feelings of touch. There are 4 most common receptors: heat, cold, pain, and pressure: * Heat and cold receptors tell your body about temperature. * Pain receptors warn your brain that your body is hurt. * Pressure receptors tell your body when something is touching you.

Integumentary System

has 4 main jobs:1) Protection  keeps water in and foreign particles out of your body2) Sense of touch  nerve endings in your skin let you feel things3) Regulates body temperature  sweat cools you, hair warms you4) Gets rid of waste  some waste chemicals are removed in sweat

The sense of touch starts with nerve endings called receptors.  The receptors send messages to the brain, where the brain interprets the messages as feelings of touch.

There are 4 most common receptors:  heat, cold, pain, and pressure:   *  Heat and cold receptors tell your body about temperature.*  Pain receptors warn your brain that your body is hurt.*  Pressure receptors tell your body when something is touching you.

Integumentary System Parts

1) SKIN  has 2 layers:Epidermis  thin surface layer of

mostly dead cells. thicker on palms and soles.

Dermis  thicker layer below the epidermis.  Contains collagen fibers, blood vessels, hair follicles, nerve fibers, muscle fibers, oil glands, and sweat glands.

2) HAIR  made of layers of dead cells, but living cells in the hair follicle.  Protects the skin from UV light, helps keep the body warm, and keeps particles out of eyes and nose.

3) NAILS  grows from the nail root out.  Protects the tips of fingers and toes.

Diseases / Disorders

Skin Cancer  damage to genetic material in skin cells causes an overgrowth of cells.  Often caused by overexposure to UV radiation in sunlight.

Is it skin cancer?  Try A B C D!

Acne  oil glands make too much oil due to hormones.  This clogs hair follicles causing white heads.  When the follicles get infected, blackheads occur.

Did you know??

A pigment called melanin causes skin color.  If you have more melanin, you have darker skin color.  If you have less melanin, you have lighter skin color.

People with lighter skin can absorb more Vitamin D from the sun, but people with darker skin are less likely to get skin cancer.

Skin is the largest organ of the body, and is able to heal itself.
