Integrating RDX ® QuikStor™ into Synology® NAS Backup

RDX QuikStor combines the Benefits of Disk and Tape

Synology NAS Systems provide an OS-built in utility to enable scheduled backups on direct attached USB-disks to secure business critical data. With the integration of Tandberg Data‘s RDX QuikStor removable media systems, users can now implement a full disaster recovery solution.

Synology NAS Systems provide a direct backup to RDX QuikStor

Even almost all Synology NAS storage systems offer data redundancy via RAID technology, data should be backed up to an external device to be protected against hardware failures or human errors. An easy to use built in utility allows scheduled backups to USB attached devices like memory sticks or external hard disks.

But these devices don‘t offer much reliability and durability, as they are not specifically designed for backup and archiving tasks with on/offline storage requirements. The RDX QuikStor removable storage system is a media based rugged, reliable and convenient backup appliance which fits perfectly into a professional backup strategy. With its USB3+ technology, RDX QuikStor easily attaches to Synology NAS system‘s USB3.0 port and is ready to go.

After the backup job has completed, the RDX QuikStor media can be ejected to be placed into a secure location. Another media should then be inserted for the next backup job. This media rotation scenario provides the best protection against data loss and unpredictable failures and disasters.

The following guide explains how to integrate a RDX QuikStor drive directly to a Synology NAS system and how to schedule a backup job.

Chose “Entire Disk” as a formatting option.

If you would like to be able to access the media from a Windows PC, select “FAT32” as a file system type, otherwise select “EXT4” as this offers a significant faster backup speed.

“FAT32” is selected in this example.

Click “OK” and confirm the displayed warning according data loss!

After formatting has finished we got a 2TB media with a share called “usbshare1”. You might want to rename this (expand the share section by clicking the down-arrow to check).

Scroll the left hand menu panel to the top and click on “Shared Folder”.

Select this share and choose “Edit” from the top menu.

Here, “Backup” has been selected as a name and “Tandberg Data” as a description.

You should use multiple RDX media for media rotation. With this, you will be able to store one media off-site for full desaster protection. Close the backup window and open the Control Panel. Select “External Devices”.

Eject the media by clicking the “Eject” button if not already done automatically after backup and insert the new one into the RDX drive. The new media has 1TB of capacity. It automatically gets the same shared folder name assigned, but needs to be formatted.

Here, “EXT4” is chosen as a formatting option.

Click “OK” to proceed.

After formatting, the media is now ready for backup. As it got the same share name, no changes need to be done on the backup job.
