Core Principles
Core Principles
Setting the Table
● Coaches are significantly impactful and have the majority influence over health and well being of players
● Even the coach’s personality can affect injury risk
● Injury Risk Reduction Programs (IRRP) work. (30-60+% reduction)
● IRRP’s lead to better player availability which leads to more wins
● Coaches know IRRP’s work and know they lead to more wins
● Adherence to IRRP’s is still not very good
● IRRP’s take time to complete at the expense of coaching/training time because they are made to be separate
● These programs originate from Medical people and designed in medical terms
Core Principles & Language
Starting with the game.
● Ball- In/Out of possession, transitions
● Rectangle Field with Boundaries● Teammates● Opponents● Space● Timed● Direction● Goals
● Rules● Coach/Ref● Technical-Tactical● Psych / Emotional● Communication● Soccer Actions/Language- passing,
receiving, opening/denying space, width, depth, attacking, defending, counter attack, pressing, counter pressing...

● Quickness● GPS● Heart Rate● VO2 Max● Kinesthetic awareness● Core, Hip & Trunk Control● Upper Body● Lower Body● Distance ran
Core Principles & Language
**Regarding Injury Risk Reduction Programming & Performance, it is imperative to connect/marry soccer to non-soccer concepts/language. The actions and behaviors (programming, exercises, etc.) are then molded by the context in which we think about these variables. Start with Soccer.
Generic In = Generic Out
Too Generic = Poor Coach & Team adherence
Core Principles & LanguageTerm Soccer Medical
Agility Able to react to opponent Agility Ladder
Speed-Physical Able to catch up to or be in front of the opponent
Time from A-B
Proper Movement Patterns Win the ball, control the ball, distribute the ball
Trunk position, knee alignment, deceleration
Conditioning Execute soccer actions/decisions over the duration of the game
Improve VO2 max
Injury Prevention Exercises on field Exercises in clinic / gym
Demo-Basic Body Position and Concepts
Soccer vs. Non-soccer examples
Single leg squat; “Good” vs. “Bad”
Defensive position; “Good” vs. “Bad”
Single leg squat vs. plant leg for passing/receiving
Deceleration drill vs. defensive pressing

Take Home Points
● Body Position- Logo to Ground, Knees to little toes, head forward, feet underneath you
● Movement- putting on the brakes over 3-5 (a few) short steps
● Need to Integrate Injury Risk Reduction Programs within the context of the sport
