bull Assess the level of willingness to start or modify and exercise program

bull Adjust the level of intensity and time commitment depending upon the above two principles

Over the years you have probably been told that if you donrsquot push your exercise to the point of pain you will never improve

Unfortunately that kind of advice will only lead you to more pain and the probability that you will stop exercising

STRETCHING

bull PAIN IS NO GAIN

This is your new motto

bull The proper way to stretch is slow controlled and to the point where you feel the stretch but not pain

bull MOVE EVERY PART EVERY WAY EVERY DAY

STRENGTH TRAINING

bull Start low and slow Either low weight or no weight at all Isometric exercises are a great way to begin

bull There should be no pain while doing the exercises The patient should be able to feel the stress of the muscle contracting only

bull Start off with doing strengthening exercises every other day

bull Home or gym weight band soup can book pet

AEROBIC ACTIVITY

bull Teach patients how to take their pulse and

know their targetrange heart rate

bull Takes oxygen should be able to carry on a

conversation (not breathless)

MOUTH CLOSED

bull Goal is 30 min a day but encourage patients

to do anything rather than nothing

Check Heart Rate

HOW TO PRESCRIBE AN EXERCISE

bull Encourage weight bearing exercise when possible Water exercises when needed for joint problems

bull Aerobic exercise for cardiovascular fitness

Balance

bull Good balance is the difference between

a healthy functional person and

bull Start with one page (6-12)

bull Start with exercises done in bed or a chair if unable to get updown from the floor easily

bull Involve a Physical Therapist or Fitness Trainer if needed for expertise or motivation
