OBIEE Camp Essbase camp
You own Essbase and bought OBIEE to
help combine relational and Essbase data
• The Result
• You found the current version of OBIEE doesn’t work that great
with Essbase
• OBIEE works great with balanced hierarchies but has issues with ragged hierarchies
• OBIEE flattens the ragged hierarchies making it difficult to find data
• Difficult to integrate relational and Essbase data
• Unfriendly OLAP reporting and analysis
• Can’t select by member name or alias
• Can’t navigate dimensions through a dimension browser
• Answers uses the “filter” functionality to do this
• If members are across columns (due to ragged hierarchy, how do you
apply the filter)
• Totals are generated on the fly in Answers (in Essbase you may
control how totals/aggregations occur and what should happen)
• Flat accounts
Physical Layer
• Define the data sources
• Manual
• Importing the
metadata into the BI
Server
• Join relationships are
defined as necessary
• Sources
• Flat files
• XML files
• Excel
• Relational sources
• Essbase
• Almost any source

Dimensions
Accounts Dim
What Happened to the Accounts Dimension?
Imagine if this were your full P&L account structure
Long list of alphabetized accounts with no hierarchy?
Balanced Hierarchies Work Well
• Think through Essbase design
• Consistent “generations” within
a dimension
• Name generations
• Essbase Generations = OBIEE
Levels
• Essbase Levels = no correlating
term in OBIEE
• Ragged hierarchies do not
work so well in OBIEE 10
Business Model Mapping Layer
• Essbase databases are already
grouped into models
• No joins required
• No hierarchy definition required
• So often times, not much work is
required here for Essbase
databases
• Unless you are joining Essbase data
across other sources / “federating”
data
Presentation Layer
• Final layer that further adds abstraction
over the Business Model and Mapping
layer
• What the end user sees
• Organize the columns into logical
catalogs and folders
• Make the information as easily and
logically accessible as possible
• Folders contain the grouping of columns
that make sense to the end user
• Users can easily navigate through the
catalogs and folders
Presentation Layer
If you didn’t rename or organize
elements in the Business Model
mapping layer, you can do it here
E.g. Rename the automatically
generated column names with no
generation name (e.g.
Gen1,Geography)

What Could You be doing today?
Business Case 1 – The Problem
• JWC grew in size quickly due to juggling acquisitions
across the world
• New systems
• New integration points
• Data warehouse does exist for some of the information but
it isn’t comprehensive
• Fields across the systems have different names and it is
difficult to get a clear apples-to-apples match of data
• Load rules, text files and SQL sources are everywhere
• What they really need is a way to define a single
consistent view of the data across systems (did someone
say common enterprise model?)
32
Business Case 1 - Problem
33
Business Case 1 - Solution
• Implement the BI Server to federate the sources across the
enterprise
• Through the BI Server they define common terms across
the different systems, creating a virtual enterprise
warehouse for all of the information at JWC
• Use the Essbase Studio to build their cubes, sourcing
dimensions and data from BI server
• Some drill through reporting provided by Essbase Studio to
access relational details
• Some “rows and columns” reporting (more relational type
of reporting) directly against the BI Server
34
Business Case 1 - Solution
• Essbase and the BI Server together
• Complement each other from a reporting and analysis standpoint
• Ease the administration efforts for the supporting organizations
• Together BI and Essbase achieve a true common
enterprise model for information delivery
35
Business Case 2 - Introduction
• FBI utilizes the BI server to unify sources across their
enterprise and deliver reporting and analysis via the web in
Oracle Answers and Dashboards
• A common model is defined in the BI Server for all of the
information across the enterprise and across systems
• Common business terminology is used so that managers
speak the same language and understand the same
reports
• Users are pretty happy with the available reporting and
analysis solution although something is missing
• Performance is a bit slow at times for some of the queries
requesting calculated members or aggregated results
36
Company Name Company Description Products Currently Used
Fire Baton Inc. (FBI); fierce
competitor of JWC
Global twirling service
specializing in fire batons
OBIEE+ / BI Server
Business Case 2 – The Problem
• Need to do more managing vs. reporting
• Need to find actionable information
• More powerful and fast analytics
• View twirling sales across customers, regions, and channels and then
drill into low performing customers to understand the “why”
• Measuring performance against a defined set of metrics and drivers
and then submitting “what if” changes to those key drivers into the
system to understand the impact on sales and profit
• And more…
37
Business Case 2 - Solution
• Essbase provides the “analysis on steroids” FBI was
missing
• Because Essbase is scalable, they are able to roll it out to
thousands of baton twirling analysts across the globe
• Power users, analysts, and managers access information
in both Essbase and the BI Server
• Executives access information via web enabled
dashboards
• Basic end users view more static reports that could contain
data from Essbase or the BI Server
38
Business Case 2 - Solution
• With Essbase and the BI server together
• Information delivery is comprehensive from end to end
• Added performance management capabilities never thought
possible
39
How do we get there?
1. Assess the current state of your data warehouse
• Assess and understand your biggest pain points and needs
• E.g. Collecting information from too many sources and systems for consistent
reporting?
• E.g. Putting adhoc analysis and advanced analytics in the hands of end users,
replacing SQL generated reports?
• Other important questions
• Where is data stored? Where should I store data? How many sources?
• Do I have a data warehouse? Is it complete?
• What are the query performance requirements?
• What are the requirements for the timing of data delivery (e.g. real-time, nightly)?
• What are the subject areas?
• What do the reports look like?
• What is the time frame for implementation?
• Who are my users and what do they need to be able to do?
• How do users need to visualize and analyze data?
• What calculations and business rules need to be included?
• Are write back capabilities required?
2. Prioritize and Plan
• Prioritize the requirements – this will help you understand where your
focus should be
• Take a phased approach in the implementation and remember you
don’t have to build everything at once
• Build the right team
• Ensure communication between data warehouse resources, BI server
resources, and Essbase resources
• You are all on the same Information Delivery team! Work together!
• Start small
• Subject area in BI Server or subject area in Essbase
And Finally…
• 3. Implement / Show Success
• Next Phases / Continual Improvement
