Integrated PHY/MAC Design for Next- Gen WiFi Prof. Qian Zhang Department of Computer Science and Engineering Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Clear Water Bay, Kowloon Hong Kong Abstract With new technology evolving, we are facing gigabit WiFi network soon. With the increasing of physical-layer (PHY) data rate in modern wireless local area networks (WLANs) (e.g., IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11ad), the overhead of media access control (MAC) progressively degrades data throughput efficiency. In this talk, I will introduce our recent research efforts on integrated PHY/MAC enhancement, which will jointly re-design PHY/MAC to enhance WiFi performance. Specifically, two concrete pieces of work will be presented. In the first work, a fine- granularity feedback control mechanism will be introduced, while a symbol-level feedback is designed to generate less retransmission overhead. In the second piece of work, a new scheme is introduced to reduce control overhead, with which the control messages will be delivered via the frequency domain. Some future interesting research directions will be highlighted at the end of this talk. Biography Dr. Zhang joined Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in Sept. 2005 where she is a full Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. She is also serving as the co- director of Huawei-HKUST innovation lab and the director of digital life research center of HKUST. Before that, she was in Microsoft Research Asia, Beijing, from July 1999, where she was the research manager of the Wireless and Networking Group. Dr. Zhang has published more than 300 refereed papers in international leading journals and key conferences in the areas of wireless/Internet multimedia networking, wireless communications and networking, wireless sensor networks, and overlay networking. Her current research is on cognitive and cooperative networks, dynamic spectrum access and management, as well as wireless sensor networks. She is a Fellow of IEEE.
