within different disciplines to create an overall solution that allows such

scenarios to run smoothly. Behind this are a series of technical interac-tions that can be implemented only

Scenario 1: fire alarm in criticalstorage facilities Initial situationIn the life science industry, raw materials, packaging, and end products are stored in large critical storage facilities. These facilities contain extremely valuable com-pany assets, and the hazard potential dur-ing a fire is particularly high. Fire, smoke, and heat can spread quickly and could cause explosions.

State-of-the-art fire safety solutions can detect fires quickly and immediately trig-ger an alarm. However, the most impor-tant issue is to respond to the alarm with the right action. To do this, the operator in the control center needs important decision-making tools in order to take the proper countermeasures: Where is the fire? Are any employees involved? What is being stored near the source of the fire? Do we need to alert the fire department? All of these questions can be answered with an intelligent integrated Total Build-ing Solution from Siemens.

Scenario with Total Building SolutionsIf a smoldering fire occurs in a critical storage facility, all information related to the fire is channeled to the control center in fractions of a second. Highly efficient steps can then be taken to fight the fire. The management system localizes the source of the fire on the floor plan. An acoustic alarm sounds. At the click of the mouse, the video surveillance system zooms in on the source of the fire. The operator can immediately see that a smoldering fire has broken out in the raw materials storage facility. In just a few seconds, the operator triggers the main alarm to the fire department and pro-vides the emergency response team with useful information about the location, type and size of the fire as well as the hazard-ous materials involved. The fire depart-ment can then plan its response tactics in advance and arrive on the scene quickly and with the right extinguishing agents.

Early intervention makes it possible to avoid the serious damage that can occur when a smoldering fire breaks out in a critical storage facility, efficiently protect-ing people and assets. Yet this is not all. The public image of the company is pro-tected as well. Major fires and explosions, in particular, result in police investiga-tions and typically lead to negative head-lines in the media, which in turn have a negative impact on the company’s image. The statistics speak for themselves: Within three years of having a major fire, 70% of the companies involved go out of business. From this perspective, Total Building Solu-tions deliver a return on investment that cannot be overestimated.

Scenario 2: evacuation in case of fire

Initial situationWhen people hear an alarm, for example while shopping at a mall, they don’t always know how to respond. Usually they do what everyone else is doing: They run in one direction and hope that nothing bad will happen. On the other hand, if an alarm jolts us awake during the night while sleeping in a hotel room, our response – indifference, disorienta-tion, annoyance or panic – is very likely to be wrong. Even if we do assess the sit-uation correctly, many things can happen: We may follow the wrong escape route or use an elevator, wasting valuable time.

Scenario with Total Building SolutionsThanks to Total Building Solutions, evacu ations in case of fire are particularly efficient. This can avoid panic. When a fire alarm is triggered in a hotel, a signal sounds in every room and the room lights are turned on. Hotel guests wake up and know immediately that they are

being evacuated. A touch panel in the room shows the guest all the necessary information in order to respond correctly to a fire alarm. The blinds have already been raised so that the fire department can rescue the guest directly through the window should this become necessary. A friendly voice comes over the loudspeaker and asks the guest to leave the room. In the hallway, running lights point out the correct escape route. On the way out of the danger zone, guests are reassured when noticing that the smoke is decreas-ing and fresh air is being supplied. They walk past the elevators, which are out of service. All escalators run in one direction only: toward the exit. All revolving doors stand open.

If hotel guests nevertheless fail to respond correctly, security staff can offer assistance at any time, thanks to continuous video surveillance throughout the evacuation. They can intervene either over the loud-speaker system or by providing assistance in person.

Scenario 3: access outside working hours Initial situationAn employee who has forgotten his access badge stands outside the office building at 11 p.m. and asks to be let in. Over the intercom, he explains to the security staff that he left his access badge on his desk and needs to get his laptop from his office. If the security officer does not recognize the employee, he must deny access to the building.

Scenario with Total Building SolutionsThanks to Total Building Solutions, the system identifies the employee – without a doubt and at any time of day. It works like this: The security officer calls up the

employee’s badge photo on the man-agement system and compares it to the image on the surveillance video. Heverifies the employee and identifies the office where he works. The access control system opens all doors along the direct route to the employee’s office. The intru-sion detection system temporarily turns itself off in the defined zone. The elevator takes the employee to his floor, but no farther. The lights go on and, if necessary, ventilation, heating or air conditioning is turned on so that the employee can reach his desk as quickly and comfortably as possible. In his office, he finds his access badge and laptop. The video surveillance system records all of the employee’s move-ments within the building, which guaran-tees continuous security.
