Editorial

Welcome to the Integrate 2011 Show Guide!

Wow! Geoff Emerick. We’ve played host to some big stars of the pro light, sound and vision industries before but I think you’d all agree, this is something else. We’re delighted The Beatles’ Abbey Road Studio engineer can join his old friend (and fellow Beatles engineer) Richard Lush for our headline presentation in The Headroom on Day 2 of the show. This world-first session has gained enormous exposure in the specialist and mainstream media, and I’ve no doubt the anticipation will all be worth it. What a treat. Don’t fret if you missed the boat on securing one of the ‘hen’s teeth’ tickets, Geoff will be a guest of Integrate for the three days of the show, and will also be appearing (free of charge) at the AudioTechnology World stage.

Once again, The Headroom is the education hub of the show. It’s a state-of-the-art, purpose-built facility (a big thanks to Pollard Productions, Staging Rentals and Videoplus for making it all possible again this year) that can seat 150+ people in comfort.

Almost as big a newsflash as audio royalty, Geoff Emerick, arriving is the greatly expanded InfoComm education program. In a first for Australia, InfoComm International has really thrown its weight behind Integrate, curating an extensive education program. As well as the popular Super Tuesday sessions, the InfoComm Academy seminars provide professional development opportunities hitherto unseen outside of the US or Europe. We’re excited by the enthusiasm with which the Australia/NZ professional AV community has got behind this expanded vision.

This year we’re also delighted to announce that the Australian Film, Television & Radio School (AFTRS) is offering a full program of Sound for Picture sessions. Mixing, music for film and location sound are all being covered. These sessions serve as a great entrée to the world of film sound.

Otherwise, 2010 success stories, such as the Technology for Worship pavilion and AudioTechnology World will continue on apace. These two areas in themselves account for more than 20 workshops, forums and panel discussion all free of charge for those visiting Integrate. If you’re into sound and/or lighting you’ll find yourselves rubbing shoulders with scores of fellow enthusiasts and professionals. What a fabulous way to make contacts and improve your skills.

It might seem a bit premature to talk about 2012, but already there are some very exciting developments that I need to tell you about. In 2012 Integrate will be relocating to the Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre (SCEC) where we’re really looking forward to developing Integrate’s potential even further. As much as we love the Royal Hall of Industries and the Hordern Pavilion, SCEC will provide Integrate with so many more meeting, conferencing, and demo room opportunities to make the show a richer experience. Can’t wait.

As ever, I hope you get the most out of this Show Guide. Use it as a prospectus to plan your visit to Integrate. What with all the new products being released and all the education sessions it’s worth taking the time to leaf through these pages and ensure you don’t miss out on many of the hidden (or not so hidden) gems.

See you at the show!

Louise Brooks – Event Director, Alchemedia Events.

Headlining

AudioTechnology and Integrate are honoured to present a world first: two of audio’s most famous and gifted recording engineers, Geoff Emerick and Richard Lush, together on stage for the first time. Between them, Messrs Emerick and Lush had a hand in virtually every recording ever made by The Beatles, including the album considered by many to be the most famous of all time – Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. These two legends of the recording world have never spoken together publicly about their Abbey Road Beatles sessions – until now. For serious recording engineers, producers or Beatles fans, this is a not-to-be-missed, once in a lifetime event! For the first time, Geoff and Richard will come together to set the record straight: debunk some myths; correct some misinformation and offer fascinating insights into the iconic Beatles recordings. So forget the secondhand information, ditch those Chinese whispers – come to Integrate and let Geoff and Richard take you on a full-tilt magical mystery tour into recording history! AudioTechnology editor, Andy Stewart, will host the two-hour headline event, which will involve everything from discussions about

some of the revolutionary recording techniques used during the sessions to hilarious and fascinating insights about what went on behind the glass all those years ago. Geoff and Richard will talk specifically about their engineering techniques of the day, the equipment used (and abused) and how the music was mixed in mono – an art almost forgotten by engineers in the 21st century. We may even convince the pair to play a few of their classic Sgt. Pepper’s mono mixes and reflect on the impact these iconic works had on recorded music. There will also be a 30-minute Q&A at the end of the session, so come armed with your most compelling question and have it answered by the gentlemen themselves. It’s destined to be a day in the life none of us will ever forget… If you’re keen to be part of history at the ticketed Wednesday afternoon session in the Integrate Headroom, we’d love to have your company. All of us at AudioTechnology magazine would like to thank Geoff and Richard in advance for providing Australian engineers and musicians with such an opportunity, and we look forward with great anticipation to hearing them speak.

InfoComm’s Super Tuesday is always packed with AV goodness, providing pros with a glimpse of the challenges and opportunities afforded by the latest technologies and techniques.

Super Tuesday Keynote: The Dawning of the Net-Centric EraRandy Lemke, Ph.D., Executive Director and CEO, InfoComm International, will cap the day off with a challenge to the AV industry. Net-Centric AV takes everyone onto the network and changes how we do business. New technical and business connections with IT are important to your enterprise if you are a buyer of AV and are equally important if you are a commercial system integrator of AV.

Taking Video Communications to a Higher Plane (Without Needing to Jump On One)This no-nonsense session covers industry trends and techniques in getting video conferencing off the ground in your enterprise and arm you with the tools to interoperate well across differing vendors and technologies from SIP to H.323 and everything in between.

Extending Unified Communications Based Multimedia Services Beyond The EnterpriseAustralian Research and Education Network (AARNet) has a vision: make a call from a video capable endpoint at one Institution to a video capable endpoint at another Institution and expect video to just work. This seminar details the challenges of the current environment, the solution and how will it work.

AWAG (Australian Wireless Audio Group) Wireless Spectrum UpdateThis presentation will answer FAQs about the spectrum reallocation, such as: Will I still be able to use my wireless microphone after 2013? What frequency range is considered ‘safe’ ? What are the potential ramifications of not changing frequency after 2013?

Integrated Building TechnologyWhen you get home you do not leave your car running, you turn it off to save petrol. So why do companies not take the same level of control over their buildings? Well today they can with the AV

industry providing the platform to provide truly integrated solutions to this problem.

I Can See the Future – Standards are Coming!Avoid surprises and be prepared. Performance Standards are new to the AV Industry, and their implementation implies a strategy for every firm. This requires attention from both the technical and business perspectives. This seminar will review the current and future InfoComm standards as a basis for system design, production, sales, and support.

BIM: An Introduction to Building Information ModellingBuilding Information Modelling (BIM) allows designers to view the building and its contents from any angle. Any equipment to be included in a project of this type must have BIM data developed by the manufacturer and available to the design team. This seminar will cover the basics of BIM and outline resources for more information.

Control in the Age of Smart DevicesThis presentation will explore the difference between smart devices and smart systems. InfoComm Academy Seminars

See Schedule

About the Presenters: Handpicked by an InfoComm International advisory committee.

Who’s it For: Professional development for AV professionals. Each session will contribute to your RUs.

Price: $55 for each session

Six new InfoComm Academy sessions have been added to the Integrate program this year. These sessions provide genuine educational opportunities for those working in the pro AV industry. These sessions have been handpicked and vetted by an InfoComm International education advisory group to ensure they provide you and/or your staff with the most relevant, most applicable tools for meeting the demands of our fast-paced marketplace.

Solving Real-Life HDMI/DVI/DisplayPort Installation ProblemsHDMI and DVI are digital video formats commonly used in home cinema, PC and AV installations. DisplayPort is an emerging digital format in the PC industry that will make its way into future AV installations. These formats offer extremely high video image quality and other advantages, but since they were mainly developed for one source to one display, they introduce limitations and problems in large-scale AV installations. In this session we will learn how to convert between the formats, identify problems when using them together with analog formats, and send the signals over distance and prevent and solve EDID-related issues.

Conferencing Best Practices: Room Environment & Design – Acoustics & LightingLighting and Acoustics are critical elements for successful remote communication. It’s not rocket science and yet the room environment is often overlooked or poorly implemented, leaving the end user with a conferencing system that is inherently limited in performance. This seminar will review basic theory for good room environment design and provide designers and integrators with the necessary tools to offer informed and constructive recommendations to their clients.

Demystifying the LoopThe Building Code of Australia is changing the way we design and install hearing assistance technology. The Deafness Forum of Australia shares with you some important information in relation to the requirements for future technology that is compliant with the Disability Act. The seminar then looks at different types of technology available to meet the regulations including Induction Loops, Infrared and 2.4GHz RF.

Video Calibration PrimerThis seminar is designed to give technicians a broad level of understanding of calibrating all the important performance aspects of modern video displays and projectors. This seminar covers everything from video basics to advanced calibration of all display technologies, addressing video processing, video equalizers, and video generators. Learn the general performance factors that determine image quality of displays and projectors and become familiar with the calibration characteristics of different display technologies.

The Power of Integration & Net-centric AV The five core subject matters covered in this presentation are: Educate, Innovate, Appreciate, Accommodate, Integrate: Each one of these five steps plays a key role in understanding the importance and fundamentals of integrated systems. We’ll discuss these steps in detail within the integration process, plus go through real life integration case studies to help you achieve a successfully outcome on your next project.

Advanced Fibre Optic DesignMany AV systems rely on fibre-optic technology for secure transmission of data, error-free delivery of content, and signal integrity over extremely long distances. In this course, you will learn critical system design techniques utilising fibre technology. Master how to calculate a system’s optical loss budget and design the system within this budget. Understand how both digital and analogue AV signals can be transmitted with pixel-for-pixel quality at distances up to 30km. This course will provide you with the knowledge to successfully design cutting-edge fibre technology into new or existing AV systems.

Interactive multimedia combines vision, graphics, audio and text, potentially to provide very rich and powerful stimuli for learning. If learning experiences are carefully designed, appropriate to the learning audience and expertly crafted then the potential for learning can exceed most other types of educational experiences, in terms of effectiveness and efficiency.

It is important to support and develop authentic and sustainable technological learning environments that are safe and gives access to an extended social network of adults and peers who highlight the path to further education and training, good jobs and higher earning power in our globally networked society.

Integrating Technologies for Powerful 21-Century LearningSue Beveridge has been an advocate of enhanced learning through the use of technologies for 32 years. Her concept of the ‘fresh equation’ encourages educators to utilise, high quality digital content, interactive whiteboards and collaborative tools to engage students. As Assistant Director for the NSW Department of Education Centre for Learning Innovation she led the development of a web portal providing  teachers with more than 22,000 learning objects. As the Educational Outcomes Change Manager for the Connected Classrooms Program, she supported teachers across the NSW Department of Education and Training to integrate, interactive whiteboards, video conferencing, Bridgit and Web 2.0 tools. This session provides a unique opportunity to hear a hugely experienced practitioner who’s ‘been there, done that’ and has got not only the t-shirt, but the snowdome, mug, tea towel and novelty teaspoon.

AETM Presents: Active LearningThe AETM (Association of Educational Technology Managers) is at the vanguard of ICT use in the education sector. Derek Powell, President of the AETM, will present cutting-edge examples of audio visual, video conferencing, E learning, streaming and podcasting technologies at work in Australian universities and TAFE colleges. We look at new learning space, new kinds of learning and show how technology enables new-style ‘active learning’. This session will be a real source of inspiration for K-12 educators and ICT managers.

Creative Media: An AFTRS InsightIn an industry that is so heavily reliant on technology, the Australian Film, Television and Radio School will provide an insight into how it has applied technology into its screen and broadcast training program along with associated production and operational environments. Tim Sadler, Director of Technology & Infrastructure and Chris McKeith, Head of Sound will discuss how technology is integrated into the students’ experience.

Workshops & Seminars

The Sydney Opera House decided to get serious about its network.

Building on an already substantial  fibre optic backbone, all the House’s IP-based services have been consolidated into one network. Which means the network that delivers the email, sends tickets to audiences and hosts the Sydney Opera House website, is also the network that controls the stage lighting, and transports the audio in the Concert Hall. Then there are the telephones, the stage communications, digital signage – it’s all connected via the same infrastructure.

Can’t be done! ?

Well, it ‘wasn’t easy’ but ARUP Theatre consultant Ben Moore, SOH Head of Technical Support Cameron O’Neill, together with the Information Systems Network manager Nich Young explain how it was done, why it was done, as well as the advantages and challenges of life with one network.

Experts from Specialised Stage Engineering will discuss the various hoisting products on the market and their applications in the theatre and entertainment industry. The discussion will include a guide to choosing the right hoisting product based on your requirements, budget and your venue.

Day 3 12:45pm Hordern Training Room #2

About the Presenter: Specialised Stage Engineering takes education seriously and has the experience and the know-how.

Who’s it For: Whether you’re working in touring, performing arts centres, schools, clubs, hotel ballrooms, convention centres or civic facilities you’ll have your questions answered.
