air traffic control building yeovilton

The new building provides traffic radar services to both military and civil aircraft flying within the south west region and benefits from all round, unobstructed visibility of the airfield and its surrounding airspace. The ATC accommodates operational, meteorological and administrative support functions and is designed to allow 24-hour operations on an as required basis. It alsoprovides the environment for the training of students from the Royal Navy School of Fighter Control.

Due to the proximity of the runways to the site, it was vital to liaise closely with the existing ATC team to co-ordinate all construction activities very carefully. Disruption to all

station operations had to be kept to an absolute minimum, with unavoidable interruptions agreed in advance with the station. Operations on the airfield were maintained through the construction works which, at one stage, included directional drilling under the main and secondary runways and associated taxiways to create the service ducts.

Construction work commenced in January 2005, with completion in February 2006 to accommodate a six-month fit-out period by Defence Communication Services. Acceptance of the project was achieved in July and the new building became fully operational in August 2006

The new air traffic control tower was the first major construction project to be completed under the Regional Prime Contract South West (RPC SW). Construction of a new ATC building was commissioned as the original tower, after 52 years of continuous service, had become increasingly difficult to maintain and lacked the space required for modern aviation operations.

CHE ashchurch, tewkesbury

The building was constructed in the early 1940’s as part of the American build-up of forces prior to D Day. It had reached the end of it’s useful life and suffered numerous defects and leaks. The asbestos sheeting was failing and had to be replaced to comply with MoD health and safety regulations. The scope of works consisted of the total refurbishment of the building to provide Controlled Humidity Environment (CHE) storage for a range of military vehicles.

This involved stripping the roof completely, making good steelwork and existing brickwork prior to re-cladding the

roof with insulated metal sheets and over cladding the walls similarly. New doors were fitted into the existing door openings, to provide vehicles access. The existing concrete floor was repaired to a minimum standard acceptable for vehicle storage. Controlled humidity plant was fitted into each bay, a fire alarm system and sprinklers protect the whole facility and new lighting and small power was provided.

DSDC Ashchurch is a storage and distribution site for all types of military vehicles. Building 1 was a warehouse facility of brick and asbestos sheet construction, with a steel structure supporting steel trusses, forming multiple pitch roofs with valley gutters.

ernesettle jetty plymouth

The project constraints included works being carried out in the environmentally sensitive River Tamar tidal estuary, which meant that several specialist environmental processes and permissions were required. The programme was extremely challenging as there could be no over-run and all works were carried out without disruption to normal DSDA Plymouth activities. The replacement fenders had a long-lead time and had to be procured early.

The existing jetty crane was dismantled and old fenders removed, using marine based plant. A total of 61 new fender piles were driven. The damaged concrete was removed, using a technique called ‘hydrodemolition’, which also required significant temporary steel support systems. The concrete repair was completed by spraying gunnite to reform the beams and columns. This gunnite provided a repair with a design life of 30 years.

The old fire main was removed to allow installation of the new fire main system. The water storage tank and pumping station were built on a concrete slab founded on concrete piles. The pre-cast concrete segmental tank was post tensioned to hold it all together. A combined pump room and switch room was also constructed.

On 30 August 2006 the crane was delivered on a sea going barge towed by an ocean going tug, from Gateshead, . The crane was constructed in four pieces: the truck frame, the machine housing, super frame and jib. This process took just three days. The final stages of the on-site crane installation, rigging, testing and commissioning was then carried out.

The replacement of the Ernesettle jetty crane was one of the original seven A* projects that were awarded to Debut at the start of the Regional Prime Contract South West. The crane is used to load and off-load ammunition for the Royal Navy’s fleet at Devonport. The scope of works included: replacing the jetty crane; jetty repairs to meet the design life of the new crane; jetty fenders replaced; fire main upgrade and other ancillary works. All works had to be carried out within a six-month construction period.

This was an extremely challenging project, which included a number of changes being introduced during construction to meet the end users’ specific requirements. The co-ordination and integration of the newly defined DCSA works required careful management. Windows were identified in the construction programme, which enabled the DCSA to complete their installation in line with the end users’ requirements for the building to become operational. The success of this project has resulted from the fully integrated approach of the project team lead by Defence Estates’ Project Manager.

The DEPM commented ’this is an excellent example of the collaborative and open approach encouraged through Prime Contracting. We are looking forward to continuing with this success at R M Poole with the remaining projects of the redevelopment programme’.

Debut has also recently completed an office, storage and garage facility at R M Poole.

The aim of the project was to provide a new facility for the control, direction and production of operations, which was linked to an existing building. This project was the first to be completed at R M Poole by Debut under the Regional Prime Contract South West.

district heating main replacement azimghur barracks

Integral M&E Services were appointed as the Design & Build Contractor with regard to the replacement of the “District Heating Main” pipe work, which included management of the associated Civil Engineering works.

The works comprised the removal of the existing steel district heating main pipe work and associated fittings including thermal insulation and concrete covers.New heavy duty pre-insulated steel pipe work (Approx 3.4KM) and fittings of various diameter (including valves, AAV’s dosing pots etc) was installed within the emptied and environmentally cleaned ducts. Additional 50mm thickness “Rockwool” insulation and water proof membrane was applied to all joints. The pipe work is continuously supported throughout its length by sand bags placed at regular intervals. Following the completion of all required

testing and inspections the pipe work was buried with a 100mm covering of sand and 150mm covering of topsoil.Double regulating valves and isolating butterfly valves were installed as required including the existing plant room. Valve pits were provided at each valve location.

The installation of the new heating main pipe work was installed in several phases incorporated into a programme of works to co-ordinate and minimise disruption to the military activities carried out on the base.

The works including provision of temporary boilers with associated oil tanks and required building shutdown, change overs were completed in line with agreed construction programme (August 2011 to March 2012)

The district heating main pipe work serving “Azimghur Barracks” was unreliable and had suffered many breeches due to the effects of corrosion.

district heating main & boiler replacement - RNAS yeovilton

The Replacement Heating main project consisted of the following:

• Installation of a new main line gas pipe from a connection point in Ilchester to RNAS Yeovilton

• Installation of 5no gas meter housings & associated control equipment.

• Installation of a gas main within RNAS Yeovilton, passing along Atlantic way, from one of the meter housings to building 159. This activity was carried out utilizing directional drilling.

• Removal of the existing boilers and associated oil tanks, followed by the installation of new gas powered boilers.

• Replacement of the district heating system pipe work within the Technical site.

The installation of all the pipe work and plant room equipment was carried out by Integral M&E Services utilising directly employed operatives. The removal and disposal of existing boilers and oil tanks was undertaken by a specialised licensed contractor.

The high temperature heating main is approx 3.3km in length installed within existing ducts and above grand gantries. The pipe work rises to high level within the hangers. The new pipe work was prefabricated in a dedicated and segregated area away from the Technical site as the project was carried out on a live airbase All works were carried out during the heating shut down period between May and September.

The Royal Naval Air Station at Yeovilton, known as HMS HERON, is located approximately 6 miles North of Yeovil. The overall site covers approximately 500 Hectares
