HANOI HERITAGE TOUR Hoan Kiem Lake and the Old Quarter located in the very centre of Hanoi, carry many stories of the ancient history. While the Old Quarter draws a picture of social life from the early centuries of Hanoi, Hoan Kiem Lake is a legendary location that has become the heart and soul of the city. Its surrounding neighborhood also consists of many historical buildings and architecture representing a French colonial period. The Hanoi Heritage tour offers opportunities to understand the initial form of the capital Hanoi and how culture and history influences urban forms and appearance. DESTINATION 1: HOAN KIEM LAKE Enjoy a tour by tramcars from Hoan Kiem Lake to explore the beauty of the legendary lake in the City centre.

Hoan Kiem Lake (“Return Sword” Lake) or Ho Guom (“Sword” Lake) links to a legend story of Le Thai To emperor. According to the story, a turtle came and grabbed back the magic sword, which was given previously to the Emperor to fight against invaders and protect the country. The lake, then, was renamed from Luc Thuy Lake (“Green Water”) to Hoan Kiem Lake (“Return Sword”) to commemorate the event; the name of “Turtle Tower” (Thap Rùa) on a small island of the lake is also linked to this legend. With a centre location, surrounded by a beautiful landscape, many ancient historical architecture buildings and magnificent French colonial period buildings, this lake is considered as a flower basket of the capital and has become a major open space in Hanoi for public and community lives.

DESTINATION 2: THE OLD QUARTER OF HANOI The Old Quarter Hanoi which is also called “36 streets and guilds”, is located outside of the royal citadel of Thang Long, and is the oldest trading area of Hanoi. It is said that artisans from many different places gathered around and settled at this area from the 13th century, creating many small handicraft-trading villages. There is a range of different traditional handicraft products produced in different guilds separated by doors. Each guild was organized as a hamlet, which was named after the traditional product produced and sold there. Today the streets with the name of traditional products such as Hang Duong for “Sugar Street”, Hang Tre for “Bamboo Street”, Hang Trong for “Drums Street”, indicate the old names for the guilds in the past.

The streets of the Old Quarter feature very special architectural characteristics with a range of long and narrow shop houses. Each house has a very narrow façade facing the street to sell traditional goods, while its backside was used for living and producing goods. This long house usually has 2 to 3 courtyards and light wells not only to gain space but also for better ventilation and lighting.

Although the Old Quarter today has become over-crowded and might lose its initial layout plan, its eternal beauty and value is undeniable.

The distinctive features of the area with the long and narrow shop houses have

influenced significantly the current urban houses and urban planning.

During the tour around the Old Quarter, the tramcar might stop at some remarkable places to study more about history, culture and architecture of the area; and thus discover their influences on modern architecture, urban planning and development. DESTINATION 3: HANOI OPERA HOUSE Leaving the traditional shops house, we will visit one of the typical architecture of the French colony period, the Hanoi Opera House located on the August Revolution square.

It was built by the French in 1901 and completed in 1911, following the model of the Opera House in Paris. Its architecture is of classical Gothique style. It has 870 seats, 18 rooms for the artists making up, 2 rehearsal rooms, a mirror room, a library and a meeting hall. The Opera House plays an important role in creating special characteristic and image of Hanoi.

DESTINATION 4: NGOC SON TEMPLE Hoan Kiem Lake neighborhood also retains many Eastern style architectures including Ngoc Son Temple (Temple of the Jade Mountain), which represents traditional value as well as the spirit of Vietnamese in the old history.

This is one of the most beautiful heritage of Hanoi, located on Hoan Kiem Lake, built on a small island of the lake and dedicated to Confucian and Taoist philosophers and the national hero - Tran Hung Dao. The small temple contains many tradition monuments such as The Huc Bridge (the “Morning Sunlight Bridge”), Thap But (“Pen Tower”), Dai Nghien (the “ink-slab”), the Dac Nguyet Lau (“Moon Contemplation Pavilion”) and Dinh Tran Ba (“Pavilion against Waves”), all featuring symbolic meanings. The “Ink-slab” and the “Pen tower” with three words “Ta Thanh Thien” (“writing on the blue sky”) on it indicate the respect of Vietnamese to Confucian spirit and to education.

The Ngoc Son Temple will be the final destination of this tour and the bus will take you back to Pullman Hotel.
