InsultsShakespearean Style!
Western LiteratureMarch 18, 2015
Warm Up for 3/18/2015
We are talking about insults today; however, please keep your responses school appropriate.
1. What is the purpose of an insult?
2. How does one make an effective insult? What constitutes a good comeback?
Introduction to Shakespearean Insults
Shakespearean Insult Generator http://www.pangloss.com/seidel/Shaker/
Questions to Consider:
• Why are Shakespeare’s plays famous?
• What makes his language unique?
Ted Talk

Shakespearean Insult Game
• We will number off by 1’s and 2’s to form two teams. Each team will line up and face the other team in a battle of wits.
• Select the best combination of insults from column 1, 2, and 3, prefaced with a “thou.”
EXAMPLE
• “Thou churlish boil-brained cankerblossom!”
Close Reading of the Friar’s Speech
• In partners, closely read and annotate (on the back of your insults sheet) Friar Lawrence’s speech to Romeo when he wants to kill himself.
• Complete a P-CAT of his speech on your sheet after your careful reading: (Essentially a TP-CASTT minus the analysis of title and shift) • Paraphrase (write your own version)• Connotations (literary elements and word choice)• Attitude (tone and mood)• Theme (what is the main subject and deeper
universal meaning of speech)
