Food safety is an important issue. Therefore all measuring devices used for food production have to be not only precise and reliable

but must also fulfill the highest hygienic standards.

The GMH Messtechnik is a full-range supplier in this area. The know-how of the four companies allows us now to offer all-in-on solutions.

Since the late 90s the “Lebensmittelhygieneverordnung” (LMHV, hygiene regulations for food) have become ef-fective in Germany and replaced the hygiene regulati-ons of the German federal states.

The producer can assure food hygiene only if the used measuring devices are designed according to hygie-nic aspects and fulfill the corresponding regulations.

Measuring requirements for hygienic designed instruments

Hygienic process control is mainly based on the following points, which the measuring devices have to fulfill therefore:

Design and installation of the devices according to the rules of the Hygienic Design Standard surface roughness Ra < 0.8 μm Cleanable according to CIP (Cleaning in place) and SIP (Sterilization in place) Usage of materials in contact with the media according the white lists of FDA and/or 3A Verification document according to DIN 10204- 2005 Approval according to EHEDG and / or 3A High protection class IP67 or IP69K

Measurements at highly varying circumstances

The media used, produced or processed in the food indust-ries often change their characteristics like density, consis-tency, reflectivity, conductivity and temperature. Boiler, tanks and other receptacles are filled with diverse media and the cleaning processes have to be adapted to this. The GMH devices provide reliable and safe measure-ments for all processes.

CIP- / SIP- cleaning process

Sensors used at food industries must be suited for CIP- and SIP- processes and exterior clea-ning. This makes high demands on housing, electronic circuits and sensor technology. Of cause, GMH devices fulfill these require-ments. All components can be adapted to the expected conditions and cavity-free designed process connections ensure all methods of an up-to-date and environmentally friendly clea-ning and sterilization.

It is important to choose an adequate process connection for each application to get a hygienic solution conforming to standards. LIMIT LEVEL

Capacitive limit level measurement (MLC)

Years of experience with continuously measuring level sen-sors helped us to develop a new measuring method for level

switches which has already been filed as patent.

Established systems use an oscillating circuit with the medium as capacitor. In contrast, the new method measures the charge carrier capacity of the medium. The conductivity of the medium does not influence the measuring value.

Calorimetric limit level measurement (HLK)

Complete probe tip made of stainless steel

The level sensor can detect liquids unaffected by conductivity or coloring. Coarse granula-

tes and mud-like products can be detected as well. Programmable filters with long term ave-

raging ensure the reli-able detection of highly fluctuating media.

Conductive limit level measurement (MLR)

This is a very cost-effective but also flexible method for limit level measurement.

The probe can be designed as single or multi rod. The probe rods can be subsequently shortened and bent to fit them optimally to the measuring situati-on. The evaluation electronics can be installed in the sensor head or in a switch cabinet.

Flow measurement of smallest quantities (HFK35-FIN)

The electronic flow monitoring with calorimetric measuring method does not need any moving parts in the flow (i.e.

no turbine wheel or float). Therefore this sensor can be also used with aggressive media.Continuously measurements of smallest quantities of - for example - flavorings, liquors, water, etc. or che-mically aggressive media is the main application field of the flow-meter HFK35-FIN.

Electromagnetic flow measurement (MFI)

With the electromagnetic measuring principle a voltage which is directly proportional to the flow velocity is induced in a con-

ductor (liquid) which moves in a magnetic field. The induced voltage is tapped by the electrodes and under consideration of

the pipe cross section it is converted by the transmitter into the current flow volume.

The measurement method is practically independent of pressu-re, density, temperature and viscosity, has no moving parts (main-

tenance free) and no pressure losses.

Hydrostatic level measurement (SA11 / TA1010)

The level measurement is done by measuring the hydrostatic pressure. Pressure is created by the liquid column above

the sensor and is directly proportional to the fill level. The results can be visualized or processed by means of evalua-

Potentiometric level measurement (MLP)

The MLP series continuously measures the level of all flow-able media with a 3-pole rod probe. Using electrostatic in-duction effects allowed us to move the reference pole into the probe. Therefore an electric connection is not neces-sary any more at the tank. This enlarges the field of ap-plication; i.e. measurements in glass or plastic tanks.

ANALYSIS MEASUREMENT

Capacitive DK-value meter (MLC433 / 437)

The MLC433 / MLC437 is used for monitoring the dielectric cons-tant DK of a product. For example oil, water mixtures can be

monitored with this device. Freely scalable current output (4..20 mA) is integrated for value output. A LC-display shows the current status and measuring value.

Visualization is the most important factor monitoring and dis-playing processes and application flows for the user.

Our range of displays for front panel or direct mounting offers solutions for nearly all measurement quantities and physical units.

A common feature of the displays is easy configura-tion via front panel buttons or DIP switches plus manifold options with relay and analog outputs.

Use under harsh conditions is feasible due to envi-ronmental class IP65. If you have not found the ap-propriate display for your application yet, please do not hesitate to ask for a customer-specific so-lution.

Calibration and Testing

Calibration devices for strain gauge ampli-fiers with manual or IEEE488 operation.

Bridge resistances 120, 350, and 1000 Ohms. Sensitivities from 0,1 to 50 resp. 250 mV/V in 10 resp. 20 steps. Accuracy ± 0,02 %.

Test standard for physically correct simula-tion of strain gauge bridges, potentiometers, thermocouples, RTDs, current, voltage, and ta-chometer generators.

The microprocessor used allows direct entry of sensor values as physical quantities. Calibration and nominal values are accounted for as well.

Transmitter

Signals from Pt100, thermocouples, strain gaug-es, or resistors cannot always be processed di-rectly.

Otherwise the signal follows a function need-ing processing as a linearized standard signal.

For these and other signals and applications we offer transmitters. In most cases the trans-mitter can be enhanced with alarm contacts for a safe shutdown in case of emergency.

Isolating Converters

Independent of the size of an installation, many failures and problems relate back to noisy sig-nals or electrical potential mismatch.

Inspection glasses for vertical mounting in various lengths to monitor fluid levels and visual appearance.

GHM Messtechnik offers an extensive range of measuring devices and probes for the measure-ment of temperature.

Temperature probes are available in very diffe-rent types with Pt100 / Pt1000 or thermocou-ple, as data logger, with integrated electronic (transmitter), ATEX-Protection or Display. There are also Bi-metal monitors for temperatu-re control in strong design, external adjustable temperature switch and platinum temperature meter with high accuracy. All can be combined with transmitters FLEX-T (switch, analog, or fre-quency output) or OMNI-T (switch, analog, or frequency output and LED display).
