Standards and Practices

New ISA standardclassifies airbornecontaminant effects onelectronic hardwareSubmitted by Paul Bodeau, Standards and Practices Chair, LosAngeles Section

ANSI/ISA-71.04-2013, Environmental Conditions for ProcessMeasurement and Control Systems: Airborne Contaminants, establishesa classification system for airborne contaminants and biologicalinfluences that may affect electronic hardware, including processmeasurement and control instruments, information technology, telecommunications, networking and data center equipment, andelectronic office equipment. The classification system provides usersand manufacturers a means of specifying the type and concentration ofairborne contaminants to which a specific piece of electronic hardwaremay be exposed.

The standard establishes airborne contaminant classes for fixed(non-mobile) installations during normal operation (non-emergencyconditions) or during transportation and storage. Activities addressed inthese environments include design, manufacturing, sales, installation, test, use, and maintenance. The classifications may also be used as aguide when establishing requirements for environmental control ofbuildings or other protective housings for industrial process measure-ment and control systems.

The classifications pertain only to the environment external to theequipment that may affect the equipment externally or internally. Theeffects of environmental conditions on the safety, comfort, andperformance of operating and maintenance personnel are not covered.

Software for usingISA 5.1 symbolswith AutoCAD released

ANSI/ISA5.1-2009, Instrumentation Symbols and Identification, isISA’s most widely used standard. It establishes a uniform means ofdepicting and identifying instruments or devices and their inherentfunctions, instrumentation systems and functions, and applicationsoftware functions used for measurement, monitoring, and control, bypresenting a designation system that includes identification schemes andgraphic symbols.

A new software product based on the standard has been issued foruse with the Autodesk AutoCAD software platform. It provides userswith graphic symbols to be used during the engineering design andlayout for a variety of instrumentation-related activities, including:

• Piping and instrument diagrams (P&ID)

• Process flow diagrams (PFD)

• Logic diagram development

• Electrical schematic layouts

• Functional block diagrams

• Instrument loop diagrams

The software provides annotative-style symbol blocks for resizingand layer color inheritance and text style selection, and symbol groups forsymbol palette configuration for ease of symbol selection. Users canassign instrument ISA-style tag numbering format (including prefix, functional ID, loop number and suffix) to instrument bubbles viapreassigned attributes. Instrument bubbles include hidden attributes formanufacturer, model number, PLC/DCS, and more.

Other features include final control element actuator symbols andfinal control elements programmed for drop down selection; instrumenta-tion device and function symbols programmed with drop down selectionof “device location and accessibility” selection from one symbol; and in-process-line symbols (valves) programmed to blank out background whenplaced in a process line.

For more information about the software, visit www.isa.org/symbolssoftware . For information about ANSI/ISA-5.1-2009, visitwww.isa.org/findstandards , select ‘5’ from the first drop-down list andscroll down, or contact Charley Robinson at (919) 990-9213 [email protected].
