OVERVIEW

Thisdocumentcontainsacompilationofassessmentsandtemplatesdevelopedfor instructorswhousePortfolio-BasedlanguageAssessment(PBLA)inLINCprograms.Theirprimarypurposeistohelpinstructors observe, assess, and record learner’s performance of specific tasks over a range ofcompetencies.TheseassessmentsfollowthestandardsoftheCanadianLanguageBenchmarks2012documentandreflecttheconsiderationsoffourspecificareas:

1. ProfilesofAbility2. KnowledgeandStrategies3. FeaturesofCommunication4. Sampleindicatorsofabilityundereachcompetencyinthefourstrands(LSRW)

Theseassessmentscaninforminstructors’benchmarkingdecisions,illustratelearners’performance,andfunctionasartefactsforthelearners’portfolios.

Therearefourdifferenttypesofdocuments:

1. Instructor-AdministerAssessments2. LearnerReflections3. Self-Assessments4. Templates

Thesefourdocumentsareorganizedbylevel(CLB4,5,6,7)andbystrand(Listening,Reading,Speaking,andWriting).Excludingthetemplates,eachassessmentcontainsasampleRealWorldTask,aholistic(or “Task Achieved”) section, and a checklist of indicators of ability. The instructor-AdministeredAssessments also include a “Features” section which highlights the specific features of thecommunicationbeingassessed.Mostoftheassessmentscanbeusedasis,whileotherswillneedtobeadapted.Forexample,thereceptiveskillsassessmentsareidentifiedbycompetency,andincludeallormostoftheindicatorsofabilityundereachcompetency.Consequently,instructorswillneedtoremoveortailorsomeoftheseindicatorstoreflectthescopeofthetaskbeingassessed.Finally,someassessmentscontainadditionalinstructivefootnotesatthebottomofthepage.
