President, A Naturalist’s World www.tracknature.com Jim is a nationally-renowned wildlife tracker, author, sci- entist and educator who is one of the world’s foremost experts on finding rare carnivore species. His work on Human/Cougar encounters is featured in The Beast in the Garden by David Baron. Jim’s specialties include environ- mental ecology, animal tracking, and mammalian carni- vores; his greatest academic love, bears, led to 20 years studying black, grizzly and polar bears. He also works with wolverine, lynx, cougar and wolves. Jim has written over 25 books, including his latest, Yellow- stone Bears in the Wild, and Track Plates for Mammals. He led the American East Greenland expeditions in 1975 and 1976, is a Fellow of the Explorer’s Club, and has re- ceived the Antarctic Service medal. Jim is also a past Chairman of the Board of Directors, a senior instructor, and an administrative liaison officer of the National Out- door Leadership School. His interest in cold climates has taken him to all seven continents and Greenland. Jim is a past Research Fellow of the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research, he was Director of the Mountain Re- search Station and the Long-term Ecological Research program in the Alpine. He is also listed in Who’s Who in the World 1989-1993, Who’s Who in Emerging Leaders 1989-1996, Who’s Who in Western America !987-1997 and Who’s Who in Science. A Vietnam veteran, Jim re- ceived the Navy Achievement Medal with Combat “V” and Vietnamese Gallantry Cross with Palm. Currently, Jim is President of A Naturalist’s World, an ecological education company. Jim received his Ph.D. in 1980 in Biology, Ecology & Mammalogy from the University of Colorado; his B.S. in 1969 and M.S. in 1970 in Botany & Ecology from the University of Wyoming. Secretive, elusive, the creature of myths and rumors, and capable of killing people, cougars stir our imagination, curiosity, and instill fear. This workshop will improve your knowledge about cougars, their presence, dangers, and manage- ment. This workshop will cover aspects of cougar ecology and how cougars interact with humans. It will also provide you with the knowledge and skills needed to accurately identify signs of cougars, dogs, lynx, wolves and other rare carnivores. You won’t leave empty-handed! You’ll be provided with extensive handouts and plaster casts of carnivore footprints you make during laborato- ries. In addition, Jim will have his books and plastic carnivore footprint collections for sale.

COSTS and DETAILS Cost is US$100 for both days and includes handouts and plaster casting supplies and meals. The pro-gram is designed for 40 people with laboratories limited to 40 participants (20 per laboratory). Registration is on a first come/pay first-served basis. Registration at the door is US$125, but attendance is limited to 40 participants and meals are not guaranteed for at-the-door registrants. Cer-tificates of Attendance will be issued. Each participant will receive extensive handouts but might also want a notebook for writing. Cameras may be used to copy some displays and materials.
