Aim of these Instructions

• To provide information for trainers and facilitators on how to use the Appearance Matters training modules in the context of providing training for Vocational Guidance Counsellors and Trainers

Aim of the modules

To provide vocational guidance counsellors and vocational trainers with knowledge and understanding relating to the prevalence and potential impacts of appearance dissatisfaction, together with hints and tips for addressing these issues amongst their trainees

• Theoretical Report - Appearance matters: optimising the outcomes for vocational guidance counselling and vocational training, which describes what is known on the incidence and impacts of appearance disatisfaction. – available in English, Deutsch, Italian, Lithuanian, Norvegian and

Swedish languages • National Reports (for Austria, Italy, Lithuania, Norway, Sweden, United

Kingdom) which contains information information about educational and vocational training system, current unemployment rates and health care provision in respective country together with specific appearance related questions

• Synthesis report which is based on National reports and focuses mainly upon the appearance related questions

Options for Implementing the Modules

Training can employ all the modules, or a selection of modules. They can be delivered in the context of • Half day course (suggested number of

participants 4-24)• One day training course • Self directed learning

• Based on 2-4 selected modules • Number of participants 4-24

• Teaching methods used:– Interactive lectures, small group discussion,

discussions in pairs

Self directed learning• Allow 8-10 hours to read and consider the materials

– Theoretical report– Synthesis report– Powerpoint Modules

• Reflect on your own experience – How do you feel about your own appearance? In what ways do these feelings

influence your behaviour?– Does the appearance of your trainees have an impact on your behaviour?– Does their appearance and the way they feel about it affect their self perceptions or

behaviour– Does appearance affect your trainees chances of achieving good outcomes from their

training (for example, in obtaining employment) – Discuss these experiences with your colleagues in relation to their work

• After completing each module– Consider whether and how you could apply your new knowledge in your practice

Before the training course• Complete the background reading

– Theoretical report– National and synthesis reports

• Prepare examples relevant to your own experience and to the context of your participants

• Develop a teaching plan (to include warm-up exercise & orientation to the content of the module(s), time for group discussions & exercises)

• Consider whether the training session would be enhanced through the inclusion of other trainers (for example, those from other relevant professions, eg psychological, sociology, social work)

Self-evaluation of learning

• Use KAP (knowledge – attitudes – practice test) test before and after the course

• Reflect on what you have learned in preparing and delivering the training modules and from the experiences reported by the participants

• Consider how you might apply your newly acquired knowledge in your own practice/work
