1.1 In the lab.

All waste containers, bottles and cardboard boxes shall be properly marked and labeled with suitable label (see page 7-8), and the chemical that supposed to be collected shall be written on the label.

**All hazardous chemical products shall, when they are used or stored in connection with use, be labelled in accordance to a pictogram label on the waste bottle/container corresponding to the safety data sheet for the hazardous product.

For further information read section 2.3.1 chemical waste.

1.2 Preparing for the waste room New containers, cardboard boxes and labels for waste are stored in the waste room. All packing containing chemical and hazardous waste is to be sealed properly. Following items provides in the trash room “AVFALLSRUM”:

White labels for Hazardous chemical waste, “Farligt Avfall”

White labels for Hazardous waste, “Riskavfall”

Cardboard boxes for hazardous chemical waste

Cardboard boxes for hazardous waste (Yellow printed board om the box)

Yellow plastic boxes for hazardous waste. Sizes: 5, 10 and 20L

Yellow plastic boxes with red lid for hazardous sharps (needles, scalpels).

Two sizes small or big.

Plastic container for liquid. Sizes: 5,10 and 20L

Absorbent as Vermeculite or perelite

Do not fill the cardboard box more than 75% to be able to close it in a proper and

safe way.

1. Fill in all the data on the white label. See instructions on the following pages, under the headline: “How to fill in the label”.

2. Apply the white label to the packing, containing chemical or hazardous waste.

3. Bring the waste to the storage room for chemical, hazardous and biological waste. The door is labeled “AVFALLSRUM”.

1.3 Trash rooms at Medicinarelängan At Medicinaregatan there is four trash room for this kind of waste. Chose the room that your section belongs to or near your laboratorium. 2.1 Hazardous chemical waste “farligt avfall” All inorganic, organic chemicals and solutions.

2.2 Hazardous waste “riskavfall”

Biological waste (ex. Cell culture medium, tissue, blood from animals and humans )

Hazardous sharps (needles, scalpels, broken glass from the lab.)

Hazardous sharps and contagious waste

Pharmaceuticals

Infectious items

Genetically modified micro-organism waste (not Infectious )

Genetically modified micro-organism waste (Infectious )

Radioactive chemicals or items

Contaminated items as used gloves, pipette tips, emptied vials.

NOTE!

There are only two waste fractions in the lab, Hazardous or Hazardous chemicals. Ex. Used gloves, papers, pipettes that are considered as clean, shall be sorted in the Hazardous waste fraction.

2. What is included in Hazardous chemical waste and Hazardous waste

3.1 Chemical waste

Packaging to be use for chemical waste

3.1.1 liquids Use a durable container. Smaller volumes of chemical waste can be put together in a carbon box or other approved packing.

**If the substance is a hazardous chemical product, a pictogram label on the waste bottle/container shall also be used.

Examples of containers to use for liquid chemicals Fig.2.a New 5 liter waste containers are stored in the waste room for pic up, Fig.2.b empty 5 liter ethanol containers or, Fig 2.c empty 1 liter ethanol bottles

Place the label on the container/bottle and write all information that requires.

For empty bottles: Put the waste label “farligt avfall” over the old label on the empty container/bottle. Make sure the old label is either clearly over crossed or removed. (Fig 2.b and 2.c).

3. How to do the packaging

3.1.2 solid waste:

Use the cardboard box to collect solid hazardous chemical waste Fig.4 and 5. Important: For chemical waste use the cardboard box marked with “Farligt avfall” (chemical waste) in black letters. See Fig. 4 Follow the instructions on the box how to fold it. See Fig. 6 Place a black plastic bag inside and label the box with the label “Faligt avfall”. See Fig. 5. Write on the label the chemical that supposed to be collected.

Label empty bottles:

3.1.3 How to fold the cardboard box

Follow the instructions on the box

3.1.4 Packaging one single small vial or bottle with chemical disposal Put the vial/bottle in a brown paper bag. The bags are available in two sizes and can be find on the table in room 0416B. Label the bag and put it at in one of the cupboards.

One single or a few small vials/bottles can be put in a paper bag Labeled with “farligt avfall”

3.2.2 For solid waste: Pipette tips, plastic tubes, bench paper and other equipment that have been contaminated with hazardous chemicals shall be collected in either of the containers as showed below Fig 10 and 11.

Use either the yellow plastic container Fig 11, or the brown card board box marked “Riskavfall” on the yellow boarder Fig. 12. For smaller parts as needles and scalpel blades, use the small yellow plastic containers with red lid Fig. 13. The cardboard boxes should have a plastic bag inside Fig. 14. Boxes should not be filled up to more than 75% to be able to seal them properly.
