1 Overview

Tweak User allows to operate multiple Palm™ handhelds with the same user namebut synchronise them to different user accounts on the desktop application.

2 Introduction

The Palm OS® desktop synchonisation process (HotSync® operation) is using auser name and a user ID to identify the handheld to the desktop application. Thisconcept is very powerful and allows to use multiple handheld with one desktop ap-plication presuming that the handheld are set-up with different user names. Butwhat about using multiple handheld with one user account and one desktop appli-cation? This is working in principal as well but becomes quickly unmanageablebecause all handheld will share the same databases on the desktop and informationis not kept separate. Ideally it should be possible to have one user name and thepossibility to define for each handheld a different database directory on the desk-top.

3 Functionality

Tweak User offers a work-around to for the situation described above. It allowsto operate multiple handheld with the same user name but synchronises them todifferent user accounts on the desktop application. To accomplish this functionalityTweak User offers a handheld owner to operate a Palm OS® 3.5x device with twodifferent user names:

• The “HotSync® User Name” gets used for the desktop synchronisation processonly. It corresponds to the user name people are already familiar with from theHotSync® process.

• In addition a different “Secondary User Name” will be used in all other situa-tions in particular when running applications.

One could say that applications are executed in the “Secondary User Name” spaceand the desktop synchronisation process is executed in the “HotSync® User Name”space.

This feature also comes handy when there is a need to run certain applications witha particular user name but on the other hand this user name shall not be used for thedesktop synchronisation process.

4 Applications

The tool targets primarily owners of multiple handheld who want to run the sameapplications with their user name on different handheld but still synchronise thedata into different desktop user accounts.

5.2 Before Using or Updating PocketWatch+

Even Tweak User is a system extension based on Notifications and not a hack allthe precautions usually recommended when installing a hack should be consideredto protect yourself against potential data loss:

• First synchronise and backup your handheld (use a backup program like Back-upBuddy or the freeware BackupAll)!

• Make sure that you are using the latest version (see 7.1).

• Check the "Known Issues and Incompatibilities" section in the Read Me Notes.

• If you experience problems it is the best to disable all hacks, enableTweak User , test it again and then enable the rest one by one.

• If something goes wrong and a normal soft reset does not solve the problem, reset your handheld while the scroll up button is pressed. This kind of resetdoesn’t execute system extensions and hacks when booting. After booting dis-able either Tweak User or the incompatible hack. You shouldn’t have to do ahard reset!

5.3 First Time Installation

Install Tweak User and perform a HotSync® operation (refer to your handheld man-ual if you do not know how to do this). After Tweak User has been synchronisedonto your handheld, you will be asked to reset the device. This is a normal proce-dure.

Run Tweak User . It will show it’s configuration box.

The “HotSync® User Name” cannot be changed. This will make sure that your hot-syncing will still work as usual and you continue syncing to the desktop databaseyou already set-up.

You can enter a different “Secondary User Name” in the entry field below the UseSecondary User Name checkbox. This “Secondary User Name” will be used forrunning applications but not for hot-syncing.

The Cancel button terminates Tweak User and no changes to the settings will bestored.

The OK button will make the changes effective and terminates Tweak User . If youenabled the Use Secondary User Name checkbox or changed the “Secondary UserName” a confirmation dialog pops up and asks you to confirm the activation.
