CHOKE

The CHOKE helps to supply fuel to theengine to aid in cold starting. Activatethe choke by moving the choke leverto the FULL CHOKE position. After en-gine attempts to start, move the chokelever to the HALF CHOKE position.Once engine starts, move choke leverto the OFF CHOKE position.

BEFORE STARTING ENGINE

_!_WARNING: Be sure to read the

fuel handling information in the safetyrules section of this manual beforeyou begin. If you do not understandthe safety rules, do not attempt to fuelyour unit. Call 1-800-235-5878.FUELING ENGINE

_WARNING: Remove fuel capslowly when refueling. This engine is certified to operate onunleaded gasoline. Before operation, gasoline must be mixed with a goodquality synthetic 2-cycle air-cooledengine oil. We recommend Craftsmanbrand synthetic oil. Mix gasoline andoil at a ratio of 40:1. A 40:1 ratio isobtained by mixing 95 ml of oil with 4litres of unleaded gasoline. Includedwith this trimmer is a 95 ml container

of oil. Pour the entire contents of thiscontainer into 4 litres of gasoline toachieve the proper fuel mixture. DONOT USE automotive oil or boat oil. These oils will cause engine damage. When mixing fuel, follow instructionsprinted on container.Once oil is added to gasoline, shakecontainer momentarily to assure thatthe fuel is thoroughly mixed. Alwaysread and follow the safety rulesrelating to fuel before fueling your unit.IMPORTANTExperience indicates that alcoholblended fuels (called gasohol or usingethanol or methanol) can attract mois-ture which leads to separation andformation of acids during storage.Acidic gas can damage the fuel sys-tem of an engine while in storage. To avoid engine problems, empty thefuel system before storage for 30 days

HOW TO START YOUR UNIT

_b_WARNING: The trimmer headwill turn while starting the engine.Avoid any contact with the muffler. Ahot muffler can cause serious burns.

STARTING A COLD ENGINE (or awarm engine after running out offuel)

1. Set unit on a flat surface.2. Slowly press the primer bulb 6 times.3. Move choke lever to FULL CHOKE

position.4. Squeeze the throttle trigger fully and

hold through all remaining steps.

5. Pull starter rope handle sharply untilengine sounds as it if is trying to start, but do not pull rope more than 6 times.

6. As soon as engine sounds as if it is try-ing to start, move choke lever to theHALFCHOKE position,

7. Pull starter rope sharply until engineruns, but no more than 6 pulls.NOTE: If the engine doesn't start af-ter 6 pulls (at the HALF CHOKE posi-tion), move the choke lever to theFULL CHOKE position and press theprimer bulb 6 times. Squeeze andhold the throttle trigger and pull thestarter rope 2 more times. Move thechoke lever to the HALF CHOKE posi-tion and pull the starter rope until theengine runs, but no more than 6pulls. If the engine still doesn't start, itis probably flooded. Proceed toSTARTING A FLOODED ENGINE.

8. Once the engine starts, allow it to run10 seconds, then move the choke le-ver to the OFF CHOKE position, Allowthe unit to run for 30 more seconds atOFF CHOKE before releasing thethrottle trigger,NOTE: If engine dies with the chokelever in the OFF CHOKE position, move the choke lever to the HALFCHOKE position and pull the rope un-til engine runs, but no more than 6pulls.

STARTING A WARM ENGINE1. Move the choke lever to the HALF

CHOKE position,2. Squeeze and hold the throttle trigger.

Keep throttle trigger fully squeezeduntil the engine runs smoothly.

3. Pull starter rope sharply until engineruns, but no more than 5 pulls,

4. Allow engine to run 15 seconds, thenmove the choke lever to the OFFCHOKE position.

NOTE: If engine has not started, pullstarter rope 5 more pulls, If engine stilldoes not run, it is probably flooded.STARTING A FLOODED ENGINEFlooded engines can be started byplacing the choke lever in the OFFCHOKE position; then, pull the rope toclear the engine of excess fuel, Thiscould require pulling the starter handlemany times depending on how badlythe unit is flooded. If the unit still doesn't start, refer toTROUBLESHOOTING TABLE or call1-800-235-5878.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONSOPERATING POSITION

ALWAYS WEAR:

Long Pants

Heavy Shoes

Cut from your right to your left.

_!k WARNING: Always wear eyeprotection, Never lean over the trim-mer head, Rocks or debris can rico-chet or be thrown into eyes and faceand cause blindness or other seriousinjury. When operating unit, stand as shownand check for the following:• Wear eye protection and heavy

clothing,• Hold trigger handle with right hand

and assist handle with left hand.• Keep unit below waist level.• Cut only from your right to your left

to ensure debris is thrown awayfrom you, Without bending over, keep line near and parallel to theground and not crowded into materi-al being cut,

Bring the engine to cutting speed be-fore entering the material to be cut.Do not run the engine at a higherspeed than necessary. The cuttingline will cut efficiently when the engineis run at less than full throttle. At lowerspeeds, there is less engine noise andvibration. The cutting line will lastlonger and will be less likely to "weld"onto the spool.Always release the throttle trigger andallow the engine to return to idlespeed when not cutting. To stop engine:• Release the throttle trigger.• Push and hold down the ON/STOP

switch until the engine has stoppedcompletely.

TRIMMER LINE ADVANCEThe trimmer line will advance approxi-mately 2 inches (5 cm) each time thebottom of the trimmer head is tappedon the ground with the engine runningat full throttle. The most efficient line length is themaximum length allowed by the linelimiter blade.

Always keep the shield in place whenthe tool is being operated. To advance line:• Operate the engine at full throttle.• Hold the trimmer head parallel to

and above the grassy area.• Tap the bottom of the trimmer head

lightly on the ground one time. Ap-proximately 2 inches (5 cm) of linewill be advanced with each tap.

Toadvance line, tap bottom of trimmerhead on ground one time.

_'rnp/ir_egt_Ut_ 1

Always tap the trimmer head on agrassy area, Tapping on surfacessuch as concrete or asphalt cancause excessive wear to the trimmerhead.

If the line is worn down to 2 inches (5cm) or less, more than one tap will berequired to obtain the most efficientline length.

_IkWARNING: Use only 0.065"(1.65 mm) diameter line. Other sizesof line will not advance properly andcan cause serious injury. Do not useother materials such as wire, string, rope, etc. Wire can break off duringcutting and become a dangerous mis-sile that can cause serious injury.CUTTING METHODS

_JkWARNING: Use minimumspeed and do not crowd the line whencutting around hard objects (rock, gravel, fence posts, etc.), which candamage the trimmer head, becomeentangled in the line, or be throwncausing a serious hazard.• The tip of the line does the cutting.

You will achieve the best perform*ance and minimum line wear by notcrowding the line into the cuttingarea. The right and wrong ways areshown below.

fences, trees and flower beds, but italso can cut the tender bark of treesor shrubs and scar fences. To helpavoid damage especially to delicatevegetation or trees with tender bark, shorten line to 4-5 in. (10-13 cm)and use at less than full throttle.

• For trimming or scalping, use lessthan full throttle to increase line lifeand decrease head wear, especially:• During light duty cutting.• Near objects around which the line

can wrap such as small posts, trees or fence wire.

• For mowing or sweeping, use fullthrottle for a good clean ob.
