New students with a prior knowledge of Spanish are required to take a placement test to assign them to the appropriate course level, available by email if requested at [email protected] or in person at ICNY.

The test consists of two parts:

Written: a multiple choice section, followed by a short writing sample.

Oral: a brief conversation with a teacher.

The test is offered Monday through Thursday from 10am to 5:30pm; and Friday from 9am to 3pm. An appointment is necessary.

CONVERSATIONAll levels

This lively course helps students develop vocabulary, reinforce grammatical structures, andlearn and utilize new expressions and colloquialisms. Students will improve their speaking skillsand become more confident and proficient in Spanish. They will discuss current events,brainstorm to solve problems, perform role-playing exercises, and deliver oral presentations.Excerpts from movies and news clips will be used as springboards for discussion.

SPANISH FOR HERITAGE SPEAKERS All levels

Designed for Spanish speakers who want to improve their Spanish grammar and vocabulary, this course will also expand your knowledge about the cultures of Spain and Latin America. Classwork includes reading and discussing relevant topics and current issues in Spain and Latin America, as well as Latino culture in the United States.

SPANISH FOR BUSINESSLevel required: B1

This course is ideal for professionals of all levels who wish to learn the language and norms of business communication and business practices in the Spanish-speaking world. Students will learn how to handle a variety of day-to-day business situations and acquire the language and proper etiquette necessary to conduct business in Spanish.

B2 IDIOMSLevel required: B2

Learn about sayings, proverbs, colloquial and idiomatic expressions used in different parts of the Spanish-speaking world. This course is designed to allow the students expand their vocabulary while learning and deepening their cultural knowledge of countries where Spanish is spoken. It is intended to meet the students’ linguistic needs and provide them with a broader understanding of everyday expressions in the language, enjoying the language more and using expressions as Spanish native speakers do.

Learn the most difficult points of Spanish Grammar in a funny way with our four different workshops: Ser y Estar, a difficult couple; Understanding Subjunctive 1 and 2; Spanish Prepositions.

BOOK CLUB Level required: B2

Each week, students will read a short story, essay, or part of a novel by a renowned Spanish-speaking writer. Through reading and class discussion, students will improve their language skills, as they become acquainted with some of the most important authors in the Spanish language.

Students are strongly encouraged to make use of the Jorge Luis Borges Library during this course.

CONVERSATIONS ON SPANISH AND LATIN AMERICAN CINEMA

Level required: B2

Watch, analyze and discuss fragments of contemporary films in Spanish, while you strengthen your Spanish comprehension, vocabulary, and conversational skills.

The Diploma in Spanish as a Foreign Language (DELE), granted by the Instituto Cervantes on behalf of the Spanish Ministry of Education is an official qualification certifying the level of competence in the Spanish language.

The DELE Diploma is the only official diploma in Spanish internationally recognized. It is also recognized by corporations, chambers of commerce, private and public educational institutions. And on top of all, it does not expire or has to be renewed!

This year we will have 4 dates available to take the exams (April, May, July and November), all of which will be available to register for from February 17.

DIPLOMA IN SPANISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE DELE

We are aware that you not always have the time or availability to attend an on-site course to learn Spanish and this is why we have an alternative for you. Learn to express yourself properly in Spanish in a variety of situations, study all aspects of the Spanish language such as grammar, vocabulary, phonetics or spelling and discover the broad, socio-cultural reality of the Spanish-speaking world in all its richness and diversity through our Spanish Virtual Classroom (AVE).

AVE is organized into the same levels as our language courses. Each course takes approximately 30 hours of work to complete and you will have over 3 months to do so. Dirigido a profesores o futuros profesores de español que se encuentran en un primer estadio de desarrollo profesional. Los participantes participarán

en talleres y en observaciones y podrán dotarse de los conocimientos, habilidades, técnicas e instrumentos básicos necesarios para poder

desempeñar satisfactoriamente clases a grupos de estudiantes principiantes o de nivel inicial de español.

REFUNDSTo request a refund, please send a written request by email to [email protected] before the first day of class. Cancellations by telephone or regular mail are not accepted. A refund will then be issued less a $75 administration fee. Refunds are not offered for private lessons. However, if you request a refund during the following 24 hours of your registration you can have the whole refund.

MAKE UP CLASSES & TRANSFERSIt is possible to make up one missed class per term by attending a class in another course of the same level, subject to availability. Once you have arranged the Make Up class is not possible to reschedule it. This will have to be arranged through the Academic Department, which may be reached at [email protected] or 212.308.4420 ext.3. Once classes have started, it is possible to switch courses before the second session of the course.

CANCELLATIONSInstituto Cervantes reserves the right to cancel classes and workshops, adjust curricula, and change teachers during sessions if necessary without advanced notice. Courses are sometimes cancelled due to insufficient enrollment (less than 4 students). If your course is cancelled, you will be notified by telephone or email and given the option to transfer to another class or to receive a full refund.
