Educational opportunities for school library media specialist certification exist at a wide variety of institutions. Entries for programs included here offer licensure or certification programs for entry-level professional positions with school library media programs. Arranged by state, the list includes certification programs at the bachelor's, post-bachelor's, and master's degree or above levels. Since gathering data for last year's list, another six school library media certification programs have ceased admitting certification candidates. Added to the 10 programs closed last year, a total of 16 programs have closed since the 1992 Annual listing.

Corrections, additions, and deletions received from mailing to the institutions themselves were the primary source used to compile this listing, with follow-up to nonrespondents. All institutions with school library media certification programs that could be identified were contacted when necessary by phone or fax. Additional sources referred to in verifying the list for accuracy and completeness include previous School Library Media Annual listings, the Directory of the Association for Library and Information Science Education, 1992-93 (Raleigh, NC: ALISE), the American Library Directory, 1993-94 (Chicago: American Library Association), “Graduate Library Education Programs, March 1993” (Chicago: Committee on Accreditation, American Library Association), and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) 1993 annual list of accredited programs (Washington, DC: NCATE).

Fax numbers and e-mail addresses are now included when provided by the institution.

The level code indicated (B, M, L, S, D) reflects the level at which the institution offers certification for school library media specialists.

B — certification is achieved at the undergraduate/bachelor's degree level M — certification is achieved at the graduate/master's degree level L — certification is achieved at the graduate level in a licensure or endorsement

program S — certification is achieved in a specialist program D — certification is achieved in a doctorate program

COA or NCATE

Accreditation status is shown based on current professional association lists (“Graduate Library Education Programs, March 1993” and the NCATE 1993 annual list). American Library Association (ALA) accreditation is awarded to library and information studies programs that have met the standards of ALA's Committee on Accreditation (COA). NCATE

accreditation is awarded to teacher education units in colleges and universities that have met the standards of NCATE

Additionally, programs accredited by the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education (NASDTEC) are so noted when identified by the institution. Because accreditation status may change, readers are advised to inquire of the school library media programs as to their accreditation status when making application.
