Introduction

The Iowa State University student chapter of Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE)

has been active in a multitude of ways. As part of the Transportation Student Association

(TSA), the Iowa State ITE chapter is able to combine engineering, planning, and logistics

into one multidisciplinary organization. The ITE student chapter has been involved with

activities ranging from professional development to social interaction, community service

to educational forums. TSA holds general meetings twice a month to discuss transportation

issues, as well as promote ITE events. In addition to meeting, email correspondence is

exchanged among staff, cabinet members, and other TSA members regarding ITE matters.

TSA has been active in 2015-2016, and continues to provide students interested in

transportation with varied professional, networking, and academic opportunities. Some of

the aforementioned opportunities and activities include traveling to professional meetings

and conferences, and participating in service projects locally in Ames and surrounding

communities. The following sections in this report include detail information regarding the

ISU chapter’s history, organization, activities, budget, student membership and chapter

activities from the previous year, along with a budget summary.

Iowa State University ITE Chapter Organization

ISU ITE History

Prior to June 1997, Iowa State University (ISU) students never attempted creating a student

chapter for the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) or the Intelligent Transportation

Society of America (ITS/A). It had long been thought that an ITE or ITS/A chapter would

compete and interfere with the strong, existing student chapter of the American Society of

Civil Engineers (ASCE). ISU did have a group of transportation students, mostly graduate

students with majors including civil engineering, community and regional planning,

transportation logistics, and economics. This organization, called the Transportation

Society (TranSoc), was a casually-formed group that met monthly for graduate students to

present their research. Attendance at the TranSoc meetings had dwindled to just a handful

of members over the course of two years. In June 1997, several transportation students and

faculty met to discuss the future of TranSoc. It was decided that this group needed a

legitimate, professional affiliation to provide the following: 1) professional membership

Page 4: Institute of Transportation Engineers ... - Midwestern ITE · (TSA), the Iowa State ITE chapter is able to combine engineering, planning, and logistics into one multidisciplinary

ITE Student Chapter Annual Report Transportation Student Association

and career opportunities for the students, and 2) a means by which to promote the growing,

inter-departmental transportation programs at ISU. This group of students and faculty

found that two prominent professional organizations included the Institute of

Transportation Engineers as well as the Intelligent Transportation Society of America

(ITS/A). They conceived the idea of a two-fold transportation organization on campus that

would build on synergies between these two. Group members formed the "Transportation

Student Association" as the parent organization of ITE and ITS/A.

ITE Organizational Structure

The Transportation Student Association (TSA) is the parent organization for both the

Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) and the Intelligent Transportation Society of

America (ITS/A). All student members of TSA are required to be national members of

either ITE or ITS/A. The student leadership of TSA consists of the TSA president (serving

as ITE and ITS/A vice president), TSA vice president/ ITE president, TSA vice president/

ITS/A president, secretary, treasurer, engineering student council representative, social

chair, and recruitment chair. A majority of the business and activity that is done by TSA

revolves around the ITE portion of the organization. The TSA business meetings are held

twice a month and incorporate all happenings of the ITE national chapter. Currently, the

national ITS/A policies regarding student chapter involvement have provoked inquiry into

dropping TSA’s affiliation with ITS/A and becoming strictly an ITE student chapter. This

is currently being discussed with members, as the ITE name is widely recognized by

transportation engineers.

Transportation Research Board Participation and Awards

One of TSA’s priorities is student participation in conferences. Each year since its

inception, TSA has been able to help approximately 15-20 students attend the

Transportation Research Board meeting in Washington, D.C. This year was no exception

as 18 students from Iowa State University were assisted financially attended the meeting.

Students had a wide variety of experiences in Washington DC. For both students who had

attended before and those who had not, this annual meeting is a time for students to be

exposed to research topics outside of Iowa State University’s scope of work. For everyone,

it is always a great opportunity to meet professionals from the transportation industry and

students from other schools.

In 2015, several TSA students won the Transportation Research Board (TRB) Best Paper

Safety Area Competition. Their paper was titled as: “Examining the Safety Impacts of

Narrow Lane Widths on Urban/Suburban Arterials”. The authors were Timothy Barrette,

Georges Bou-Saab, Amrita Goswamy, Raha Hamzeie, Emira Rista, Brendan Russo, Bo

Wang, and Peter Savolainen. In 2016 TSA student, Raha Hamzeie participated in TRB’s

student paper competition. Her proposed study was to use the SHRP2 data to examine the

factors determining fault in multi-vehicle conflicts. She presented her preliminary results

in TRB 2016 annual meeting as she was

selected as one of the winners for this

competition. She also presented her research

called “Assessing the Safety Performance of

High-Speed Two-Lane Highways with

Differential Speed Limits for Trucks and

Buses” as a poster. Other TSA members Ellen Nightingale, Patty Thompson, Timothy

Barrette also presented a poster at TRB 2016, and recent alumni and former TSA member

Dr. Brandon Russo presented a paper “Development of Crash Modification Factors for

Summary

This past year, the Iowa State ITE chapter has grown in several key areas. The most notable

of these is in the area of professional development. Professional development is also

enhanced by the regional and national speakers that present at the bi-weekly business

meetings, along with the financial support made available to send students to national

conferences such as TRB. Other areas that ITE has concentrated upon during the past year

include community service, social interaction and chapter outreach. By careful allocation of

funds, TSA should continue to provide students who are interested in the transportation with

meaningful educational and professional opportunities.
