In the 1st half of the 2011 year Ludmila Berdina and Denis Laptev due to the International organizations OSA andSPIE and IRE-OSA-SPIE Student Chapter have got the opportunity to participate in the International conferencesin Kiev. Kiev, one of the most beautiful cities in Ukraine, capital, administrative, economic, scientific, cultural andeducational center. It is one of the biggest cities in Europe. This scenic city with population of over 3 millionpeople is located on the shores of the Dnepr River. Kiev is a city of invaluable historical and cultural monuments,a city of great events and outstanding people. Everyone can find there something especially interesting forhimself.

3. I International Young Scientists Conference on “Low Temperature Physics”(June 6-10, 2011)

General Information

The 2-nd International conference for young scientists “Low Temperature Physics” was held traditionally atthe Institute for Low Temperature Physics and Engineering of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine(ILTPE NASU). The main goals of the conference, as a previous years, were to help young scientists andstudents from different research institutes and universities to get in touch with each other, to listen to review talkson hot topics presented by leading scientists, and to try their own skills in scientific presentations. This secondinternational conference ICYS-LTP-2011 gathered near 150 young scientists. Most of them were from differentparts of Ukraine, 20 from FSU and European Countries as well as Czech Republic, Germany, Russia etc.

As usual, session on Optics and Photonics (OP) was held due to the support of OSA/SPIE JointChapter of Institute of Radiophysics and Electronics. In addition, conference was supported by IEEEMagnetics and IEEE MTT-S Student Chapters.

Preliminary program of the OP Session included:Invited Lecturer from OSA: Dr. Charles W. Clark, Joint Quantum institute, National Institute ofStandards and technology and the University of Maryland, USA, “NEXT GENERATIONATOMTRONICS”Invited Lecturer from IEEE Magnetic: Dr. Axel Hoffman, Materials Science Division, ArgonneNational Laboratory, USA, “PURE SPIN CURRENTS: DISCHARGING SPINTRONICS”Invited Lecturer: Prof. Longin N. Lisetski, Institute for Scintillation Materials STC “Institute forSingle Crystals” NAS of Ukraine, “DISPERSIONS OF CARBON NANOTUBES IN LIQUIDCRYSTALS AS A NEW CLASS OF COMPOSITE NANOMATERIALS”

Optics & Photonics session as it was:

Invited talks–This year we had great opportunity to listen 3 outstanding lectures in frame of invited lecturer programs fromSPIE, OSA and IEEE. All of lectures were devoted to hot topics at modern science and were very interestingand useful for all participants of Conference. Some photo from these lections you can see below.Invited lecturer from IEEE Magnetic – Dr. Axel Hoffman, “PURE SPIN CURRENTS: DISCHARGINGSPINTRONICS”. In this lecture, Axel discussed different approaches for generating pure spin currents, suchas non-local electrical injection from a ferromagnet, charge-to-spin current conversion via spin Hall effects, and spin pumping from ferromagnetic resonance.

Invited lecturer from OSA – Dr. Charles W. Clark, lecture “NEXT GENERATION ATOMTRONICS”. Lecturewas devoted to multifunctional materials in which control of one physical characteristic induces changes inanother, quite different property. And ultracold atomic systems which can overcome many physical limitationsof real materials by exploiting flexible control of interatomic forces, flexible control of optical lattice structureand of lattice-atom interactions, and of sample preparation techniques which skirt the constraints of bulkthermodynamics.

Invited talk – Prof. Longin N. Lisetski presented lecture named “DISPERSIONS OF CARBON NANOTUBESIN LIQUID CRYSTALS AS A NEW CLASS OF COMPOSITE NANOMATERIALS”. This lecture describesdispersions of carbon nanotubes in liquid crystals as an example of new materials emerging in the course ofextensive studies in the fields of nanophysics and nanotechnology.

5. Young Scientists Workshop (7,9 June 2011)

Now it is a good tradition to hold Young Scientist Workshop in frame of each International Conference forYoung Scientists “Low Temperature Physics”. This time Young Scientist Workshop was being held duringtwo days. First part of Workshop was devoted to professional development of conference participants. Due tothe SPIE Traveling Lecturer Program the participants of the conference were able to hear a very usefullecture of Dr. Jean-luc Duomont, Founding partner Principiae, Belgium “STRUCTURINGYOUR SCIENTIFIC REPORT”. This lecture was read at 7-th June. It was amazing lecture, so brightand clear. All scientists, especially young, got a possibility to supplement their experience in very importantfield – writing articles and other scientific papers. This lecture was immediately translated by our leadingscientist Prof. Mikhail Strzhemechny to Russian language for much better understanding. You can see photosfrom this lecture bellow.

Next part of Workshop was taking place at 9-th June. This part of Workshops pursues one's object – showstudents their perspectives and possibilities in their professional life. With that point in view there are twolections have been held. In these lections Axel Hoffman and Charles W. Clark told us about IEEE and OSAand possibilities for students in these societies. Both of reports were very interesting and informative for ouryoung scientists. And some photos from Young Scientist Workshop you can see below:Dr. Axel Hoffman with his presentation about IEEE Magnetic Society:
