Nature gives us many interesting lessons to draw upon. It helps illustrate parables of what happens in our lives. Look at a cygnet when it is born. It is vulnerable, but there is something about it that shows inherent resilience and for-titude. That cygnet is destined to be a Swan when it grows up, one of the most majestic & stately aquatic birds in nature.

Only a few years ago, the Institute of Manage-ment Sciences (IMSciences) was a fledgling or-ganization, but its potential and inherent char-acter was evident to most. Today it is well on its way to becoming a national institution.

The continuous accolades the institution has been receiving is a result of the collective vi-sion of one of most talented bodies of young academics in the country. The constant in-crease in the enrollment of students at IM-Sciences over the past few years is itself a testament of IMSciences’ unhindered progress and expansion.

Our high standards help us to pick the best students across the country, and our qualified and committed faculty members become not only academic mentors to them, but often per-sonal ones too.

IMSciences is committed to redress social in-equity, which is why we have an ambitious pro-gramme to help students who have the ability but not the resources to be able to get a world class education. We do this in collaboration with USAID, FEF, the Japanese Government, Khushhali Bank and from our own resources in the form of generous scholarships.

The Institute has progressively increased its academic collaboration/linkages with British Universities. Students are now transferring their credit hours from IMSciences to its U.K. partners in different fields. This makes our de-gree at par with UK qualifications in these in-stances.

The upgrading of our digital library and the provision of the Pakistan Education and Re-search Network (PERN) connectivity by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) is yet an-other milestone in the Institute’s journey to-wards achieving its objectives.

I am grateful for your interest in IMSciences and wish you well in the admission process.

Introduction

The Institute of Management Sciences (IM-Sciences) is the foremost management school of the NWFP, and increasingly its recognition has been extending beyond the Frontier. As a public sector Institute it is markedly differ-ent from others because it is fully autonomous and self governing. This enables it to respond quickly to all new developments in the world of academia and meet the requirements of em-ployers.IMSciences operates with a view to foster growth in students’ know how and professional skills and enable them to remain competitive in a tight labour market. We have been success-ful in achieving this, and over time we have ex-panded our functions.Today IMSciences offers degree programmes for business administration, management, in-formation technology and public health. These are all similarly tied knowledge bases that help create synergy and foster the cross fertiliza-tion of knowledge. The current position of the IMSciences as a forerunner in education provision has come about as a unique case of self sustained devel-opment. This was made possible by a dedicat-ed staff that had the creativity to grow beyond the narrow confines of state provided educa-tion.Most of the universities in Pakistan have been in stasis for decades now, but the IMSciences has been one of the few examples of success-ful growth in academia, one that has become a benchmark of quality for others.

The Institute of Management Sciences owes its reputation in part to the structure it is en-dowed with. It is a government body of higher education that grew out of the University of Pe-shawar, but is free of many of the bottlenecks that are sometimes associated with traditional governance structures.

The simplest analogy to understand what an autonomous status is by comparing IMScienc-es to the Institute of Business Administration (IBA), Karachi. Both are autonomous and Gov-ernment of Pakistan entities. Both institutes’ growth outpaced that of the universities they were initially associated with. Like IBA, IM-Sciences also awards its own degree under the aegis of the HEC of Pakistan.

The IMSciences is recognized by the govern-ment as a seat of excellence, and to facilitate its further expansion and excellence in Infor-mation Technology, Business Administration, Public Health and all allied disciplines, a Board of Governors was placed as a policy making body.

The Board of Governors is composed of emi-nent educationists, industrialists, prominent corporate executives, and representatives of the Provincial & Federal Government. It is a dynamic body with the ability of input in the running of the institute’s many different, and essential perspectives.

Status of IMSciences

9

As a public sector institution, the Board of Gov-ernors also provides a crucial link between the IMSciences and the business world.

Chronology of Autonomy1999: The Government of the NWFP declared the Institute autonomous notification No. SO (UE) 1-47/98 on the 12-6-1999 as the Institute of Management Sciences.

2002: The Status as a Statutory en-tity was granted through the prom-ulgation of the Institute of Manage-ment Sciences Ordinance 2002 by the Governor of the NWFP on Oc-tober 2, 2002 through No. LEGIS: 1 (12)/98/7278 by the Law Depart-ment, Government of NWFP.

2005: The IMSciences Board of Gov-ernors in its seventh meeting on the 10th of May 2005 allowed IMScienc-es to issue its own degrees to fuel academic growth and determine its own strategic priorities.

Philosophy of IMSciences

achieving academic growth and contribute to the economic regeneration and prosperity of NWFP in particular and the country in general. Our close association with the HEC, foreign and local donors/NGOs and philanthropists will provide a strong impetus to our programmes of studies at all levels.

The Institute has emerged as a leading busi-ness school for maintaining the highest aca-demic standards and discipline. Our rigorous selection criterion is based purely on merit and transparent processes. The Institute has a highly qualified faculty that operates under an excellent academic environment, with un-interrupted schedules; strictly followed by the students and faculty. Our systems of class-room instruction is highly participative in all respects. The examination system is based on continuous evaluation of students that enables students to work throughout the study period specified in the programmes.

IMSciences operates in a manner that com-bines the best of the public spirit of a state university, while working internally in a manner that reflects the best of market enterprise.

What does this mean?

It means that IMSciences is not shortsighted with profit oriented goals but it means that it invests in research because its job is the cre-ation of a relevant body of ideas (irrespective of its marketability), it means that its duty is a long standing commitment towards the growth of its students and it means that it must put all its resources towards this end.

It also means that IMSciences takes care to avoid some of the bottlenecks found in gov-ernment departments and operates with the efficiency of market enterprise. This results in teaching and research that is done with com-mitment, this means that our graduates are taught in a manner with relevant courses that maximizes their professional skills and exper-tise.

Our overarching aim is to build IMSciences into, not just a seat of teaching excellence, a powerhouse of knowledge creation and re-search development.

Its achievements in learning, teaching, re-search, placement, its focus on the develop-ment of foreign links extending the frontiers of IMSciences into public private partnerships and the establishment of centres of excellence in the Institute will help create conditions for

The Programme is attended by Health Professionals in Kabul. This will be a benefit for the Afghan nation and im-prove the Health infrastructure in the country. Highly Qualified Professors from IMSciences conduct an MPH course in Afghanistan, using IMSciences curriculum adapted to the specific needs of the Afghan students.

IMSciences Partnered ScholarshipsOver the past years IMSciences has funded a significant number of students who were fac-ing financial constraints and were unable to continue their education. IMSciences Centres for Excellence in Informa-tion Technology and Business in coordination with HEC has stepped in the community of leading institutions with long and respected research tradition. One of the most recent achievements is its linkage programme. As the Institute is committed to sustaining a close re-lationship with industry, it offers a number of opportunities for cooperation and growth.

Our focus on the purpose of linkages/collabo-rations has expanded. Previously our interna-tional linkages aimed at knowledge synthesis and at collaboration between academics. Now we have shifted to include our students as di-rect beneficiaries of this process. Currently we aim at getting our courses accredited in so that the courses of IMSciences are accepted at face value rather than resorting to third party standardized testing. In this connection MoUs have been signed with the Southampton University UK, University of Hull UK, University of Glasgow and Coventry University UK.

Split Degree ProgrammeLinkage programme has also extended to MS and PhD programmes. This programme is known as split degree programme. Candidates in the split programme can pursue part of their course work/research at the partnering Insti-tutions of UK depending upon the agreement and compliance with the requirements of the collaborating institution and with the approval of concerned supervising and administering

IMSciences has developed centres of excel-lence that will be developing subject areas and functional responsibilities in high growth areas with little current academic provision. To meet these needs IMSciences is already using these centres to provide vital training servic-es, courses and research input to government, bilateral agencies and multilaterals.

Human Resource DevelopmentThe Human Resource Development Centre (HRDC) of IMSciences helps the Institute to improve and enrich its own and other organi-zations (in the public and private sectors) hu-man resources training and development pro-grammes and services.

The Human Resources Development Centre (HRDC) mission is working towards develop-ing a culture among organizations to invest in human resources, enabling employees to con-tribute towards the growth of the organization and enhancing their quality of work. IMScienc-es HRDC has completed training programmes for the Election Commission of Pakistan, the Central Board of Revenue, Pakistan Computer Bureau and Planning & Development Depart-ment, Government of N-WFP.

Health Management One of the strategic objectives of IMSciences is its commitment to creating a centre of excel-

lence for health management, health econom-ics, and health policy research with national and international recognition for efficient and effective utilization of health care resources. The motto of IMSciences centre of excellence in health management is “Advancing Knowl-edge, Improving Health”. The Institute is run-ning MPH programmes under the aegis of the Centre. Extension of MPH programme to Ibn-Sina, Kabul, Afghanistan is one of evidences of internationally validation and acceptance of IMSciences MPH programme.

Micro Finance The Centre of Excellence in Micro-finance has been established at IMSciences with the col-laboration of AMAN Consultants Islamabad to strengthen micro-finance sector through development of appropriate knowledge and skilled human resource that create a condu-cive environment for effectiveness of micro-fi-nance programmes as a strategy for poverty alleviation. It is a new initiative in the discipline of Micro-finance. The Centre has been set up with the purpose of addressing the huge capacity building gap that exists in this sec-tor. It will create a cadre of trained managers and leaders who will further lead the micro-finance movement. This centre is supported by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). More recently it has also been funded by the European Union (EU) for

The Semester SystemThe scheme of courses and the rules and regulations of IMSciences have been designed to meet interna-tional standards. All programmes of study at the IM-Sciences are run under a rigorous semester system.

The performance of students is evaluated through a continuous testing procedure spread over the entire period of studies. In each semester three monthly and one comprehensive exam are held. Attendance plays an important role in semester system, and at IMSciences it is made sure that every student fulfills the standard requirement of attendance i.e. at least 80%. Semester system education enables a student to be successful in nowadays fast and challenging world. Students are kept busy and working with con-stant home assignments, surprise quizzes and several presentations. One of the most important features of semester system is that it is a gradual and system-atic way of studying. Each semester leads in to the other; that is, the first semester starts with the basics of courses and slowly the courses become advanced as the semesters move toward the final ones.

Our learning and teaching programmes have con-tinued to be highly regarded in external reviews. IMSciences has a unique approach to teaching and learning, providing our students the opportunity to develop subject-specific transferable skills, knowl-edge and attitude. Our faculty enhances their knowl-edge and skill capacity by holding monthly progress review meetings, help colleagues share good practice and provide an overview of the latest developments.

research studies and further training programmes.

Entrepreneurship Development This centre has been developed re-cently and has already signed a Memo-randum of Understanding (MOU) with the Small & Medium Enterprise Devel-opment Authority (SMEDA) to fulfill its role as an enabling unit for business development

Research and Development DivisionThe Institute has a research and de-velopment division, devoted to the academic and empirical research in the fields of business, industry, public en-terprises and other related areas. Such work, besides harnessing students zest for research and analysis, provides op-portunity to the Centre to play its vital role in national development by iden-tifying problems and suggesting solu-tions which are practicable, viable and feasible. The Division help facilitate, coordinate and cooperate in research projects and programmes undertaken by sister research Institutions anywhere at home and abroad.

Career Opportunities

Despite the resurgence of economic activity in Pak-istan, the labour market is still recovering from the downturn of the past. IMSciences has been fortunate enough to help add value to its graduating students and they have been able to secure well remunerated employment.

With help from the contacts made in our internship programme, the efforts of our department and the intellectual merit of the students, the roster of em-ployers is now quite diverse. For example, our recent graduating class has been employed by the following organizations in the Banking Sector.

CitiBank, Standard Chartered, Bank Alfalah, Union Bank, State Bank of Pakistan, MCB & Askari Commer-cial Bank and NADRA.

Also, recently we have added new organizations who have helped participate in the internship scheme that students undergo during their studies, this partial list includes:

Pakistan International Airline (PIA), Pakistan Tobacco Company. Orient McCann-Erickson, Saudi Pak Com-mercial Bank, NADRA, Cherat Cement, SMEDA, PICIC, Pakistan State Oil, SME Bank, Bank Alfalah, Bank of Khyber, PTCL, NIT, Coca Cola, State Life, Saudi Red Crescent Society, DACAAR, International Rescue Com-mittee (IRC), Shell, Warid, Telenor, Pearl Continental, SRSP, Nestle, GTZ-BEFARe and the British Council.

IMSciences does not take upon itself to guarantee any kind of employment to its students, but does under-take the responsibility to provide an education that makes students able to stand their own ground in the face of any competition.

Rules and Regulations

Hourly examinations will be administered ev-ery month and thus students are required to appear in three such examinations for each course in a semester (the two best scores will be counted towards the final grade). A number of surprise quizzes will be given during classes to monitor the day to day progress of the stu-dents. Moreover, the performance of students in class discussions, written assignments, re-search reports etc., will be evaluated to form a part of their overall grades.

If the requirements are not met within this time limit, the student’s grade in that course will be converted into a ‘fail’. No “Make Up’ examina-tion will be allowed in any course under any circumstances. A Grade Point Average (GPA) will be computed at the end of the course for all students. Final letter grades in each course will be converted to grade points on the fol-lowing basis:

c. GPA Requirements

Students must maintain a minimum GPA/CGPA of 2.2 on a cumulative basis during the course of their academic programme. Students with a GPA/CGPA. of less than 2.0 will be dropped from the rolls of the Institute forthwith. Stu-dents securing a GPA/CGPA between 2.0 and 2.2 will be on probation for one semester.

At the end of the semester, students on proba-tion will be required to improve their GPA/CGPA

a. Attendance

Every student of the Institute is required to maintain at least 80% of the attendance in each course. A student who fails to meet the minimum requirements of attendance in any course will not be allowed to sit for final ex-amination for that course(s). The 20% margin of absence has been allowed to cover the ab-sence from the classes due to illness or other unavoidable circumstances. All events such as seminars, special lab work, guest speakers dis-course, etc. requiring attendance may be ad-justed to cover shortage in attendance in the related subject

A student short of the prescribed attendance level in any course(s) shall be considered as having failed in that course(s) and his CGPA/GPA will be calculated accordingly.

It is the responsibility of the students to con-stantly monitor their attendance level.

b. Evaluation and Grading

The performance of students will be evaluated through a continuous testing procedure spread over the entire period of studies/semester. Be-sides the semester’s final examination, which carries forty percent of the total marks, there will be a number of tests, term papers, assign-ments, presentations and short quizzes.
