1. Aim
The aim of the MD (Ayu) Degree course shall be to produce experts and specialists who
will be efficient and competent teachers, clinicians, pharmaceutical experts, scholars and
researchers in the respective fields of Ayurveda.

3. Board of Study in Ayurveda and Functions
3.1 Board of Study (BOS) in Ayurveda shall be established in the Institute of
Indigenous Medicine (IIM) and shall be consist of following members. Secretary
of the Board should be a senior academic of the IIM.
The members of the Board of Study in Ayurveda shall be appointed for a period
of 03 years.
i. Director
ii. Additional Director - PG Section
iii. Head - Ayurveda
iv. Head - Unani
v. Heads of the Departments of Ayurveda Section
vi. One Senior Professor or Professor or Associate Professor or
Senior Lecturer from each Department of Ayurveda Section
vii. Course Coordinator (Ayurveda)
viii. Director from BMARI or his nominee
ix. Director or his nominee from National Ayurveda Teaching
Hospital, Borella
x. A Senior Consultant from National Ayurveda Teaching Hospital,
Borella or his nominee.
xi. Two external experts related to the Ayurvedic/ Traditional medical
field nominated by Research and Higher Degrees Committee
(RHDC)
xii. Dean, Faculty of Medicine or his nominee
xiii. Director of PGIM or his nominee
Chaired by a senior academic elected by the Board from among its members.

3.2 Functions of the Board of Study in Ayurveda
Board of Study should;
i. Prepare and submit prospectus, regulations, training programmes and
the ways and means of obtaining board certification with respect to
the candidate’s specialization and submit to the Research and Higher
Degrees Committee (RHDC) for approval.
ii. Recommend supervisor/s for the candidates for the consideration of
the RHDC.
iii. Recommend the title of the thesis by evaluating the synopsis.
iv. Recommend the Boards of Examiners.
v. Assign academic, research or technical duties to candidates through
the relevant academic department.
vi. Receive progress reports including foreign training programme from
supervisorsand recommend the same to the RHDC.
vii. Advise on the standards, nature, extent and mode of foreign training
to concerned parties.
viii. Receive comments from the pre-submission seminar and direct the
candidates to incorporate them in the study
4. Administration of the [MD(Ayu)]Programme
4.1 RHDC of the Institute of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo
shall be responsible for the academic and administrative activities of the
course.
4.2 Board of study is responsible for preparing prospectus, regulations etc;
4.3 The Additional Director of the postgraduate section shall be responsible
for the implementation of the decisions taken by the administrative
bodies with respect to academic, administrative and financial affairs,
under the direction of the Director, IIM.
4.4 There shall be a Course Coordinator for the program who shall be
appointed by the Director among the academic staff of the IIM. Course
Coordinator shall act under the direction of the Additional Director and he
shall receive a document stating the duties and functions of the post of
Course Coordinator. Course Coordinator shall be paid such allowance as
shall be approved by the Board of Management (BOM) of the IIM.
4.5 Ethics Review Committee is responsible for ethical clearance of research
project proposals.

5. Course duration
1. The period of training for [MD(Ayu)] is 03 years after the first
registration. The course is a full time with one year course work and
preliminary preparation for the research and two years of research and
training program with overseas exposure in a foreign University.
2. Medium of Instruction – English
6. Admission criteria
6.1 Basic Requirements
BAMS/DAMS/DSAMS recognized by the Senate of University of Colombo with
the completion of one year internship.
Ordinary degree pass shall be the basic requirement.
Selection Criteria - Selection of candidates shall be made strictly on the basis of
final merit index calculated out of total of 100 marks based on
selectionexamination.
6.2 General procedure
There shall be a selection examination and selection of the candidates will be
done strictly on the basis of merit of selection examination.
7. Application procedure
7.1 The Director of the Institute shall, by notice through the press or the media,
call for applications from suitable candidates.
7.2 A person seeking admission to the programme shall make an application
obtained from the administration office on paying non-refundable application
fee to the Institute furnishing his/her qualifications and other information
requested for undertaking the programme. Duly filled application form
should be sent to the Registrar, Institute of Indigenous Medicine under
registered cover.
7.3 The Candidate will have to indicate three specialty fields of his/her choice in
the application form.
7.4 Applications received shall be forwarded by the Registrar to the Additional
Director for further action.
8. Selection procedure
Candidates will be selected on the basis of the merit at selection examination and 50% of
marks should be obtained to be considered successful. Those successful candidates will
be called for an interview and will be selected by the panel of the selection committee on
the basis of merit.

8.1 Selection Examination
This examination is a written examination which comprises M.C.Q. paper consisting
of 60 questions based on the general subject matters of Ayurveda medicine. Time
allotted is 02 hours and carries 100 marks. The M.C.Q. paper is set and evaluated on
negative mark basis. Each M.C.Q. shall contain 5 correct/incorrect responses.
9. Registration procedure
9.1 Candidates who have been proclaimed as successful by the selection
committee and on payment of the prescribed fees shall be formally and
duly registered by the Institute to the programme, with the approval of the
Board of Management and Senate.
9.2 The Registrar shall officially notify the list of names of the registered
candidatesto the RHDC.
9.3 Such registration shall be valid for the specified period from the date of
registration
9.4 The candidate shall ensure that his/her registration remains in force
throughout thecourse as indicated in this set of regulations.
9.5 The candidate is required to register in two occasions during the course.
First registration shall be done on admission to the course for the first
year. Second registration shall be done as and when the student is enrolled
to the 2nd
year after being declared as successful at the first examination.
9.6 The registration shall be deemed to have lapsed when validity periods end
or due to reasons given in items 16 of this document. A student whose
registration has so lapsed may renew his registration with the permission
of the RHDC for 01 year at a time paying the prescribed fees, provided
that he is still eligible to be registered for the course. No students shall be
continuing in the programme beyond 6 years from the date of 1st
registration.
9.7 The Institute shall not repay or refund to any person any fees paid to it on
any ground whatsoever except in case of stipulated in 9.8.
9.8 If the number of candidates registered for the course in a given year is not
sufficient for the programme to be financially viable the Institute reserves
the right not to conduct the course subject to the Institute repaying any
fees already received.

10. Selection procedure for the specialty
10.1On being registered to the Course, the candidate will be selected for the
specialty on which pursues his work by the RHDC on following basis.
a- Candidate’s preference (based on merit)
b- Availability of place, supervisors, facilities etc. in the IIM
c - Requirements or requests of Institutes / Department of
Ayurveda
10.2 In case candidate does not want to pursue on the specialty from which
he/she is being selected, he/she may appeal to the RHDC through the
Board of Study and the decision of RHDC through the Board of
Management and Senate can be final.
10.3 RHDC should notify the Board of Study by sending a list of names of
registered candidates with their specialties.
11. Course structure
The training period of 03 years will be as follows:
11.1 One year of course work and preliminary preparation for the research. The
students shall have to acquire knowledge in the applied aspect of the
fundamentals of Ayurveda.
The balance two years programme will be split as follows:
06 months of foreign exposure programme for clinical and / practical or
research training
18 months of clinical training and research programme locally.
In the clinical training the students shall have to acquire the knowledge of
independent work as a specialist, shall undertake responsibility in
management and treatment of patients independently and deal with
emergencies.
11.2 The students shall have to attend at least seventy five percent of total
lectures, practical and clinical tutorials or classes to become eligible for
appearing in the examination.
11.3 Candidates shall be given an intense training in classical knowledge along
with comparative and critical study of subject.
11.4 The candidates shall have to acquire the knowledge about the methods and
techniques of research in the respective fields making use of information
technology.
11.5 They are required to know the methods and techniques of research work
done in the respective field and required to take part in seminars, group
discussions, clinical meetings etc. during the tenure of the course.

11.6 During the first year of the course hospital and laboratory training shall be
given to all candidates.
11.7 Whenever required the candidates have to participate in the teaching and
training programmes for undergraduates students or interns on the
instructions of the relevant Head of the department and Supervisor.
11.8 The students shall have to attend special lectures, demonstrations;
seminars, study tours and such other activities as may be arranged by the
teaching departments.
12. Thesis
12.1 The title of the thesis along with the synopsis, with approval of the
ethics committee constituted by the institute as per regulations of the
University, shall besubmitted to the Course Co-ordinator within a period
of six months from the date of admission to PG course.
12.2 If the student fails to submit the title of thesis and synopsis within the
period specified under sub regulation (12.1) his/her terms for final PG
course will be extended for six months or more in accordance with the
time of submission of the synopsis.
12.3 The synopsis of the proposed scheme of work should indicate the
familiarity of the student with the proposed theme of work, the name of
the department and the name and designation of the supervisor, if any.
The RHDC should approve the synopsis not later than three months after
submission of the synopsis.
12.4 A candidate who is eligible to proceed to the second year shall undertake
a research project assigned to him/her and shall thereafter present a
thesis in word processed and spiral bound form.
12.5 Tentative title of the thesis with an outline of the proposed work in the
form of synopsis certified by the supervisor indicating the familiarity of
the candidate with the proposed scheme of work should be submitted to
the Board of study and then to the RHDC for approval.
12.6 The subject of every thesis shall be research, practical oriented,
innovative and helpful in the development of Ayurveda and Traditional
Medicine. The subject of the thesis shall have relation with the subject
matter of the specialty.
12.7 Once the title for thesis is approved by the RHDC, the student shall not
be allowed to change the title of the proposed theme of work without

permission of the RHDC.
12.8 The thesis shall contain the methods and data of the research carried out
by thestudent on the problem selected by him and completed under the
guidance of the teacher approved by the Senate.
12.9 Three copies of the spiral bound thesis along with a certificate from the
Supervisor should reach the office of the Registrar of the Institute four
months before the final examination.
12.10 The thesis shall be assessed by two external examiners appointed by the
University.The candidate should submit the final corrected thesis with
the recommendation of the internal examiner appointed by the
University.
12.11 The thesis shall be accepted only after the approval of examiners
appointed under sub-regulation (12.10) and in case of disapproval by one
external examiner; the thesis shall be referred to third examiner.
12.12 If the thesis is not accepted by two external examiners, the same shall be
returned to the student with the remarks of the examiners and the student
can resubmit the thesis after making necessary improvement in the light
of examiners'report to the Institute within a further period of one year.
12.13 No candidate shall be allowed to submit the thesis before the expiry of
two academic years after submission of the title of the thesis.
12.14 Candidate should submit the thesis according to the format designed by
the Board of Study and approval of Senate through the RHDC and BOM,
along with the published or accepted research publication from the thesis
in a peer reviewed journal as an annexure.
13. Assessment and Examination procedure
The course of [MD(Ayu)] will consist of the following scheme of Examinations.
13.1 First Examination
13.2 Final Examination
The student shall have to attend at least 75% of total lectures, practical and clinical
tutorials or classes to become eligible for appearing in the examinations. Without any
valid reasons, if a candidate fails to meet the required attendance, he/she should complete
the above requirements with the next batch.
The RHDC shall reserve the right to determine the mode of examination if necessary.
However in addition to following listed procedure, the candidate may be asked to appear

for continuous assessments and in such a case it will be counted to the results of part I
and part II examinations.
13.1First examination
Paper I - Part A - Research Methodology-Written
Part B - Bio-Medical Statistics –Written
Paper II- Part A - Applied aspects of fundamentals regarding
concerned subjects. -Written /Viva/Practical
Part B - Concerned subject -Written/Viva/Practical
13.1.a Method of Examination
The first examination will be held at the end of the first year. The First
examination consists of two papers (Paper I and Paper II).
Each question paper (Essay type and/or structured essay and /or MCQ) is
of 03hrs duration and carries 100 marks. The candidate should obtain 50
marks or above for a pass.
The mode of question paper will be decided by the Board of Study on the
recommendation of the relevant departments.
a. The Board of Examiners of 1st [MD(Ayu)] examination are appointed
by the Senate on the recommendation of the Board of Study, RHDC
and BOM of IIM for setting-up of questions, moderation, scrutinizing
of answers etc.
b. The 1st year examination shall be held twice a year, namely annual and
supplementary examination. The first attempt is considered as the
annual and subsequent attempt is considered as supplementary
examination. The schedule of these examinations will be decided by
the RHDC of IIM.
c. Candidates should obtain 50% marks or above in written examination
and 40% marks or above in practical and viva voce examination. Total
aggregate of marks should be 50% or above to be considered as pass in
the first [MD(Ayu)] examination and will be promoted to second year.
d. Those candidates, who had not been declared successful in any
component of the paper, have to appear for the examination of the
relevant paper and the candidate must be declared successful in that
paper at the supplementary examination in order to be registered for
the second year.
e. Candidates who have not successfully completed the first year
examination are allowed to attend 2nd
year academic programme with
temporary registration. But he/she must complete the first year

examination at the first subsequent supplementary examination. Those
who are not successful at the supplementary examination will be
discontinued from the course. Candidates who could not attend the
supplementary examination due to a valid reason will be allowed to sit
the examination with the following batch with the approval of the
senate.
f. The candidate who has not been successful at the supplementary
examination shall follow the programme with the next batch of
students.
13.2 Final examination –
13.2.a (method of examination)
The final examination will be held at the end of the 3rd
year of the
course.
This examination will consist of the following components.
13.2.a.1: Written examination (component 1)
13.2.a.2: Clinical/practical examination (component 2)
13.2.a.3: Thesis and Viva-voce examination (component 3)
13.2.a.1 Written Examination
This examination consists of four (4) separate question papers
the following study areas.
Paper I - Assessment on Samhita literature (based on respective
fields)
Paper II -Siddhantha of respective field
Paper III- Research aspects and recent advances in respective field
Paper IV- Practical aspects of respective field
Setting and moderation of question paper should be done by a
special board of examiners appointed by the Board of Study and
should obtain the approval of the senate through the RHDC and
BOM, IIM.
a. Each of the above-indicated study areas will be examined by a
structured / essay type written paper of 3 hours duration.
b. Each paper should comprise 5 questions.
The proportion of respective field and specialized field is three to
two (3:2)
c. Each written paper carries 100 marks in all. 50% mark should be
obtained to be declared pass.

13.2.a.2 Clinical / Practical examination
i. This examination will be held under the direct supervision of the
academic department under which the candidate registered himself
for specialty. Fifty percent (50%) should be scored to declare as
successful.
ii. Mode of this examination will be decided by the respective academic
departments and should be approved by the Board of study.
13.2.a.3 Thesis and viva-voce examination
i. A candidate who is eligible to proceed to the second year shall
undertake a research project assigned to him and shall thereafter
present a thesis word processed and bound (spiral) form along with
the published or accepted research publication from the thesis in a
peer reviewed journal as an annexure.
ii. Viva–voce examination on the thesis will be arranged by the
examination branch in consultation with Additional Director.
iii. The Board will consist of Additional Director (as the chairman), two
evaluators, Course Co-ordinator and Supervisors will be invited as
observers.
iv. The candidate should score a minimum of 50% in the thesis and
Viva-voce examination to be considered as successful.
v. In case, where the reports of the examiners are not unanimous, the
RHDC shall take such decision as may be necessary in the light of
the recommendations made by the examiners.
vi. The successful candidate should submit 5 bound copies of the final
thesis. Two copies will be returned to the candidate after
certification.
13.3Evaluation of thesis
Thesis will be examined by two external evaluators independently. The RHDC
shall forward the names of Evaluators for the approval of the senate through the
BOM.
Evaluators shall send their reports along with the copies of thesis, to the registrar
preferably within a period of two months. Their final recommendation should be
given at the end of viva-voce examination.
The following information should invariably be incorporated among other things
by the adjudicators in their report.
a. The degree of authenticity and originality of the research work.
b. Adequacy of the research work
c. Whether the candidate’s contribution is satisfactory or not
d. Literary standards of the thesis
e. Whether the abstract is satisfactory or not
f. Whether recording and analysis of data is satisfactory or not

g. Whether the discussion is satisfactory or not
h. Whether adequate bibliography is incorporated.
i. Any other relevant observations.
j. Adjudicator’s evaluation:
Accepted, with minor corrections, Accepted with major
corrections: Resubmission, Rejected.
i. Thesis with minor corrections should be resubmitted
within 03 months.
ii. Thesis with major corrections should be resubmitted
within 06 months.
iii. Thesis recommended for resubmission should be
resubmitted within 01year.
iv. A candidate, whose thesis is rejected, should carry out
component 3 (Thesis and Viva voce examination) as a
new project as advised. The thesis shall be evaluated by
the same examiners as far as possible and has to be
summoned from another viva.
The candidate must initially submit 3 copies of the thesis in spiral bound
form through the supervisor and Additional Director to the Examination
branch of the Institute.
Examination branch shall send 2 copies to Adjudicators.
13.4 Satisfaction of the board of examination to declare as pass in each component of
the final examination.
13.5 Candidates, who failed in any of the components 1, 2 & 3 in the first attempt,
shall appear for that particular component at a subsequent supplementary
examination.
13.6 A candidate has to complete degree course within six (06) years from the date of
first registration and the maximum number of attempts for final examination will
be three (03).
14. Portfolio
14.1 Record of work engaged by the candidate in the department will be kept by every
candidate duly certified by the teacher concerned/ relevant authority related to
research/ clinical and submitted to the head of department monthly.
14.2 Every six months, candidate should submit a progress report duly certified by the
supervisor, to the RHDC.
14.3 Foreign Training and Research programme
Every candidate should undergo a 6 months training in a recognized overseas
institute during 2nd
phase of studies.

14.4 Candidate in consultation of supervisor should submit the work plan of the
proposed overseas training along with the synopsis for the approval of the RHDC.
14.5 Progress report should be sent to the local supervisor by the candidate with the
recommendation of the foreign supervisor. A separate confidential report will be
obtained from the overseas supervisor in a prescribed form by RHDC.
14.6 A Panel of five members should do a presentation of the work done during the
overseas training before the board of study.
15. Pre-submission seminar of the Thesis
15.1 Candidate in consultation with the supervisor should present pre-submission
seminar to the committee appointed by the board of study before submitting the
thesis.
15.2 The committee will take steps to report on the outcome of the above pre-
submission seminar to the RHDC through the BOS.
16. Cancellation of Registration.
16.1 Registration of any candidate shall be cancelled on the following conditions as
decided by the RHDC and approved by the BOM and senate.
i. Exceeding the maximum duration of the course specified
ii. Failure to pay the course fee and other fees within 3 months of the due date
iii. Failure to submit consecutive three progress reports as specified and failure
tosubmit the progress report of the foreign training programme.
iv. Violation of rules and regulation of the University of Colombo and IIM.
v. Gross-Unsatisfactory academic performances including foreign training
programme as decided by the RHDC.
vi. Not abiding with the rulings and decisions of the RHDC.
17. Supervision (Appointment of Supervisor and duties)
17.1 The Institute will produce a list of internal academic members on the approval of
RHDC, who can serve as supervisors. The candidate should identify, request and
get the consent of the supervisor/s for his research.
17.2 The candidate should report to the RHDC within three calendar months from the
date of first registration to the course along with the document of consent of the
supervisor.
17.3 The qualification for the internal supervisor should be:
Degree of PhD or [MD (Ayu)] in subject concerned with 03 years of teaching
and research experience at post graduate level.

This decision was taken on the recommendations of quality assurance&
accreditation Council report on qualification frame work published by Ministry
of Higher Education (page No.7).
17.4 There should not be more than 03 candidates under a professor; 03 candidates
underan Associate professor and 02 candidates under Senior lecturer at a given
time. Above prescribed quota shall automatically be considered vacated at the end
of 03 years from the date of registration.
17.5 Thosewho plan to be away from the Institute of Indigenous Medicine/University
concerned for a period exceeding 3 months shall not be appointed as a
supervisor.
17.6 Teachers who have already been appointed as supervisors should not be allowed
to leave the Institute of Indigenous Medicine/University unless the
responsibilityis handed over to another qualified supervisor with the approval of
the Senate on the recommendation of BOS, RHDC and BOM.
17.7 The internal supervisor should be a permanent academic staff member of the
Institute. However, more supervisors may be appointed with the approval of
RHDC.
18. Award of the Degree
The successful candidates in the final examination will be awarded the Doctor of
Medicine in Ayurveda [MD (Ayu)] with the mention of specialized subject. The
effective date of the degree will be the first date of forthcoming month after
submission of the thesis.
19. Board certification
Board certification will be awarded after successful completion of two years post
[MD (Ayu)] clinical /Practical/ research training as recommended by a board of
examiners.
POST MD(Ayu) TRAINING
Duration
This shall consist of 12 months of training locally and 12 months of training at a
recognized center overseas, approved by the Board of Study Ayurveda [BOS
(Ayu)]. The 12 months of local training can be done en bloc or in two parts before
or after the period of overseas training.
To be board certified as a Specialist in Ayurveda in Sri Lanka, on completion of
the 24 month period in-service training after the MD (Ayu ) Examination, the
trainee should have achieved all the objectives described in post MD (Ayu)
portfolio (post MD(Ayu) training) as follows:

The trainee should maintain a Training and Assessment Portfolio to document and
reflect on his / her training experience and identify and correct any weaknesses in
the competencies expected of him, and also recognize and analyze any significant
clinical events/practical experienced, so that appropriate changes in management
could be adopted in order to reduce the risks arising from such situations in the
future. The Portfolio should be maintained from entry to the training programme
up to Board Certification. The supervisors/Trainers are expected to review the
candidate’s progress at regular intervals. It is the responsibility of the trainee to
obtain the signature of the trainer after these reviews, and submit the Training
Portfolio for evaluation by the BOS(Ayu) annually and also at the Pre Board
Certification Assessment for evaluation of his competence to practice
independently as a Specialist in Ayurveda.If there is no such training can be
foundcompleted PhD on research can be equivalent of this regards.
20. Publication of Thesis
If any candidate intends to publish the thesis he/she shall obtain the approval of
the University.
21. Foreign candidates
Applications for the course of [MD (Ayu)] shall be entertained from foreign
students subject to the terms and conditions of the Institute of Indigenous
Medicine, University of Colombo and University Grants Commission (UGC), Sri
Lanka.
22. Interpretation
In these By-Laws unless it is specifically stated otherwise,
The "University" means the Senate of the University of Colombo constituted under the
Universities Act No.16 of 1978 as amended subsequently.
The "IIM" means the Institute of Indigenous Medicine established under the Institute
of Indigenous Medicine No. 7 of 1979, affiliated to the University of Colombo.
The "Board of Management" means the Board of Management of the IIM.
The "Board of Study" means the Board of Study set up the IIM for MD(Ayu)
postgraduate degree programme.
Any question regarding the interpretation of these By-Laws shall be referred to the
Council of the University of Colombo whose decision thereon shall be final.

The Vice-Chancellor shall have the authority, in consultation with the Director of the
IIM to take such action or give such direction not inconsistent with the principles
underlying the provisions of these By-Laws, as appears to him/her be necessary or
expedient for the purpose of removing any difficulties that may arise in the
interpretation of these By-Laws for which there is no provision in these by-laws.
