President’s Greeting
Dear Fellow Women’s Institute Members,
I hope you have all enjoyed this special PEIWI Centennial Year and all of the
celebrations that took place throughout 2013. It certainly is a year to remember.
As we look forward to 2014 I encourage everyone to make the most of being a
Women’s Institute member – learn something new while having fun; meet new
people by welcoming them into your community and into your branches; and help
out a friend or neighbor or stranger who just might need a helping hand or a shoulder
to lean on.
May you all have a wonderful holiday season and best wishes for a great 2014.

PEI Executive Officer to FWIC
Our Centennial year has truly been a memorable one for all PEIWI Members. One
of the highlights was hosting our National Board meetings in June and providing a
unique experience for participants from across Canada as we did in 2009 when we
hosted the FWIC Convention. July was exciting as well when Lt. Gov. Frank Lewis
and his wife Dorothy opened their home for a Garden Party and honoured WI’s
Centennial with a display of artifacts for the public to enjoy. At this time we were
not only privileged to hear from our National President, Marie Kenny, but were
also entertained by our ACWW World President, May Kidd from Scotland. Everett,
my husband, and I had the pleasure of touring with Marie and Cecil Kenny, May
and Neil Kidd, and our President-Elect, Jacquie Laird, to Green Gables and then to
O’Leary where we attended the Potato Blossom Festival Banquet with our Hon-
ourary Member, Fairley Yeo, who arranged for Marie, Jacquie, May, and herself to
speak to the different levels of our organization as honoured guests.
Nationally, our popular monthly "Take 10" thoughts are providing inspiration for us to become healthier both
physically and mentally, while branches are reaping benefits of successful campaigns with Vesey’s Bulbs
fundraising campaign. We are asking that you create a "Willy the Worm" to feed at your meetings in how to keep
our national organization viable. We are excited about our new Scholarship Program for the International Peace
Gardens. Guidelines are now available for the Tweedsmuir and Senator Cairine Wilson Competitions so plan to
enter and begin your preparations now. At the Executive meetings in Brantford, Ontario, in November more details
were finalized on these initiatives and further plans were made for the 2015 Convention in Fredericton, N.B.

Convener Report
In celebrating 100 years, we had an anniversary celebration at the Confederation Centre,
with a fashion show of styles and stories from previous decades.
Many area Districts held summer celebrations with tea parties, socials and dessert
parties. These functions were well attended and enjoyed by members and guests. The
weather was perfect for an outdoor event. WI had a float that took part in many parades
across PEI this past summer.
A celebration tea and rose ceremony was held on the grounds of Government House, as
well as a tour of the historic house and WI artifacts. Also in attendance was May Kidd,
ACWW National President.
There are a number of educational kits and videos available online or at the WI office,
all branches are encouraged to take advantage of these wonderful resources.

Members of South Milton WI were looking for
ways to improve our environment. This led to
the making of handmade quilts for
residents of the Garden Home in Charlottetown.
The quilts were made by re-using leftover fab-
ric and yarn donated by members, friends and
relatives.
Linda Harding, Activities Director at the home
was presented with 40 quilts last June and more
this September. Each resident will choose their
own quilt to use over their shoulders or on their
laps to keep warm and cozy.
The ladies plan to continue this project until
each resident has her/his own lap quilt.
In the adjacent picture are WI members Pat
Willis and Laura Curtis; Activities Director,
Linda Harding; seated residents, Edwina Wood
and Gerry MacDonald.
For more information on South Milton’s activities please contact Pat Willis at 368-1745.

PEI Culinary Kitchen Party
Celebrating 100 years of
Women’s Institute on PEI was
held on September 22 at the New
London Community Complex.
Chef Calvin Burt offered a
distinctive culinary experience
along with Eddy Quinn providing
entertainment for the evening.
The Georgetown Conference, Redefining Rural recently took place in Georgetown, PEI with
two WI members taking part. The conference chaired by four eminent Atlantic Canadians:
Wade MacLauchlan of Stanhope, PEI; John Bragg of Collingwood, NS, Gilles LePage of
Caraquet, NB and Donna Butt of Trinity, Newfoundland and Labrador was developed to
purposely engage stakeholders with the sole purpose of revitalizing our rural communities.
Taking leading roles were Barb Dunphy, President of the newly formed Greater Charlottetown
WI Branch and Katie Beck Bowser, WI member of WI Good Luck Alliston Branch.
Redefining Rural The Georgetown Conference
Katie Beck-Bowser, member of Alliston Women's Institute, is a volunteer, high
performance fitness instructor and recent graduate from Memorial University with a
Bachelor of Kinesiology with Honours. She is currently completing her Master of
Science in the Kinesiology Department at UPEI and is examining physical activity
factors in the older adult. She is also head instructor of the Kinesiology labs in
the university program. She brought a unique perspective to the Conference on the
importance of youth engagement in rural community participation with the purpose of
shedding light on the practices and morals that make initiatives appealing for younger
individuals in a rural community.
Barb Dunphy is Chief Executive Officer of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Foundation,
a charitable organization raising money for the largest hospital on PEI and has been
recently elected as President for a new WI Branch. Barb has been instrumental in
the establishment of a WI Branch in the Greater Charlottetown area and delivered a
unique position in discussing taking a traditional rural Branch to the City. Rural
settings have always contained a quiet strong leadership on PEI. Now with Charlotte-
town’s participation as the largest community encompassing almost half of PEI’s
population, this initiative should further assist in impacting on more Island families
enabling positive change in the broader Island community on societal issues that don’t
discriminate between urban and rural of literacy, family violence, buying local or
healthy living, to name a few.

Everybody loves a parade and that included the PEIWI! And what better way to celebrate 100 years than to enter a
float in some of the parades held across the island in the summer of 2013. Rena Thompson, on behalf of The Cen-
tennial Committee, started the ball rolling. She was joined by Carol Connick and Kaye Larkin. Glenn Younker and
Audrey Farquharson later joined the committee. A call went out to find branches/districts that would like to partici-
pate and Pam Jewell was contracted to come up with a design. The response from the branches was great and in
the end we went out to eight community parades. The theme for the Gold Cup Parade was “Parade of Heroes” so the
WI float featured our heroine, founder Adelaide Hunter Hoodless, dressed in period costume rocking away in front
of a replica of her 1840 historic home. Joining her on the float were several women of the day representing various
activities including community involvement, education and family life, as well as children dressed up as fruit and
vegetables denoting WI’s part in Agriculture.
Another aspect of the float was the backdrop of trees made from recycled cans collected from various branch mem-
bers, an Island-wide salute to the environment by Women’s Institute. The float was decorated in blue, white and
gold colors of the WI emblem. The Bridge in the centre of the float depicted the connection of 1913 to today.
Rena and Guy Thompson generously agreed to tour the float around to the various communities. Pam had provided
costumes which were circulated to the communities so people could be dressed in period attire and just arrive at the
parade and hop on. Pam had recruited a very able carpenter in the person of Jaime Baker.
Our journey began on July 6, at the Summerside Lobster Carnival, the first parade of the season. District 5a
branches Wilmot Valley, Summerside, Sherbrooke, Wilmot and Belmont, supplied the people, and also a lobster,
two pumpkins, a strawberry, a carrot, and a tomato, and in keeping with its Rocking 50’s theme a couple of ’50s
chicks. The float garnered awards for both Best Theme Entry and Best Non-Profit.
On July 20 the float was at the Potato Blossom Festival in O’Leary with the Knutsford WI and their families fea-
tured on the float. The theme was “A Tribute to Stompin” Tom and the float won Best Overall Float.
July 25 saw the float travelling to Northumberland Fisheries Festival in Murray River. The Alliston WI provided the
participants and Kirmuir WI gave us moral support. The float won Best Overall Entry.
July 26 Crapaud Exhibition was celebrating their 60th Anniversary and District 7 provided the people in costumes.
The float won Best Overall Entry. According to Charles Caleb Colton, Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery so
we take it as a compliment that the Crapaud Exhibition 60th Anniversary Float had a couple of “WI members” on
their float.
On August 3 at the Tyne Valley Oyster Festival, Freeland WI did their best but the float was up against some pretty
strong competition. For a small community, Tyne Valley puts on a very impressive parade, well worth the trip.
Our National President Marie Kenny along with some of her grandchildren joined members of North River,
Highfield and Brackley WI’s in The Gold Cup Parade in Charlottetown.
Kelvin Grove WI provided the people for the parade on Aug. 17 for the Kensington Harvest Festival. Sandra Casely
of Kelvin Grove WI was presented a picture of the float as winner of the Best Community Group Float.
By the time the float arrived at the Dundas Plowing Match on August 24 the local WI members were too busy with
the Plowing Match itself and other activities so Glen, Audrey and Rena jumped on, joining Pat MacKinnon . The
float won Evertt J. MacLeod Memorial Award presented annually to the Best Float in the form of a trophy.
Parade Float
It was a pleasure to see Pam’s creation develop from a concept to a beautiful, prize winning float of which we could
all be proud. The response received from the branches/districts was heart-warming and it was a delight to meet and
work with so many members. We owe a debt of thanks to David Cole for his fifth-wheel trailer; Ron and Ann
MacKinley for letting us use their warehouse; Sterling Mitchell for the use of the riser; all the people who donated
cans for the trees; to Jewell’s for the plants and flowers; and to Guy, Myron, Lowell and Keith who so willingly
helped out.
A great time was had by all. What better way to enjoy a Prince Edward Island Summer and celebrate 100 years of
WI than touring the island and taking part in all those wonderful festivals and exhibitions.
We were all saddened when a short time after the parades were over, Guy Thompson passed away suddenly --
a reminder of how fragile life is. Thank-you Guy, for your major contribution to this Centennial Endeavour.

With sad hearts, PEIWI mourned the passing of Guy
Thompson in September (left). Committee Float
member Rena Thompson (right) along with her
husband Guy spearheaded the logistical movement for
the PEIWI float for most of the parade routes this past
summer. The Centennial committee and PEIWI Board
were saddened by the loss of Guy and issues a special
thank you to Rena and her family for Guy's role and
their part in a most successful summer of WI parade
participation throughout Prince Edward Island.

District Area 10A
Members of District 10A, enjoyed a Picnic at
Meadowvale Park on July 26th. Fifty people came
and enjoyed an afternoon of fun and laughter.
Children enjoyed drawing pictures on the pave-
ment, playing ball and showing some of their new
found friends how to swing a hula hoop. Some of
our members enjoyed swinging on the swings and
a trip down the slide. We all enjoyed a great meal
topped off with Island strawberries and ice cream.
It was another wonderful opportunity to get
together as Women’s Institute members to share
stories and enjoy the company of our sister
members. We wish everyone a wonderful year as
we celebrate one hundred years of serving “Home
and Country”.
Knutsford Women’s Institute
The Knutsford Women’s Institute held a Centennial
Tea on Saturday, June 15, 2013 at the “Historical
Knutsford School” (community centre) to celebrate
the 100th anniversary of the Women’s Institute on
Prince Edward Island.
Present and former WI members from Knutsford,
West Devon, Dock, Miminegash and O’Leary were
in attendance. Also in attendance were Carol
Connick and Myrna Murray from the
Provincial WI Board who presented a slide show
presentation on the past hundred years of Women’s
Institute in PEI.
An afternoon tea was served by the members of
Knutsford WI. President Joan Smallman poured
from a silver tea service, and the members served
the guests sitting around tables adorned with
china, silver and linen.
A relaxing time of conversation, friendship and
food was enjoyed by all on a beautiful summer
afternoon.
Centennial Celebrations
The 100th Anniversary of the North River Women’s Institute was held July 9 at the North River
Fire Hall. In attendance was National President, Marie Kenny, as well as Provincial President
Cynthia Mitchell, former WI members, WI members and guests.
The master of ceremonies for the evening was Margaret MacKinley. President Roberta Wight
welcomed everyone, and Louise Mills said Grace. Members enjoyed a delicious dinner. The
three presidents then cut the anniversary cake.
Shelia MacNeill read the minutes of the very first meeting (100 years ago) from the original WI
book. Both national and provincial presidents brought greetings and wished the group continued
success in its future endeavours.
Faye Trowsdale made a fitting presentation in remembering the group’s past WI members and
all they accomplished down through the years.
Irma Gallant introduced the guest speakers, Edith Crabbe, Rena Hughes and Teresa Docherty.
These women have been active WI members for many years. They told those present how they
first became aware of the Women’s Institute, how they travelled to meetings and how they
worked for school improvement and some of the changes they experienced. Linda MacLean
thanked the women for sharing their memories noting
how much everyone appreciated them taking the time
to be there.
One hundred years ago to the day, July 9, 2013, the
North River Women’s Institute was formed under the
supervision of Ms. James at East Wiltshire School,
that included Warren Grove and East Wiltshire school
districts. It was first called Harmony WI but three
years later changed to North River WI.
As the group completes 100 years of work for Home
and Country its members hope the WI will continue to
be an active organization in communities in the future.

WI President Roberta Wight and FWIC President
Marie Kenny.
