Introduction

About this book This book contains realistic tasks covering all parts ofthe IELTS test on photocopiable pages. The tasks arepreceded by a ‘warm-up activity’ called Introductionand followed by one or more follow-up activities toprovide you with a complete lesson which yourstudents should find enjoyable, interesting and, aboveall, useful preparation for the IELTS test.

TimingThe lessons take from 45 minutes to about 1 hour 30minutes. Detailed guidance on timing is given in theteacher’s notes. If the lessons are too long for theperiod of your class, the teacher’s notes containsuggestions for giving activities for homework or fordoing them in a following lesson.

LevelsThe IELTS test is designed to give each candidate doingthe test a result in a Band from Band 1 (Non-user) toBand 9 (Expert User). The tasks in this book are at thesame level of difficulty as the tasks in the IELTS test. The activities and the teacher’s notes are designed togive practice and preparation for both Intermediateand Advanced students taking the test in order tooptimise their performance.

For the purposes of this book:Intermediate students would be expected to achieve Band 4, 5 or 6 in the test.Advanced students would be expected to achieve Band 6, 7 or 8.

Teacher’s notesThe teacher’s notes give detailed advice on how toprepare your students for each part of the IELTS testand each question-type. There is separate advice forIntermediate and Advanced classes. You should choosethe advice which best suits your students’ level, but youcan always use advice from the Advanced boxes withIntermediate classes and vice versa, if you think it is useful. You may wish to supplement these lessons with extragrammar practice. Our recommended grammar booksare Advanced Grammar in Use – a reference andpractice book for advanced learners of English, (withanswers), ISBN: 0 521 498686 and English Grammar inUse – reference and practice for intermediate students,(with answers), ISBN: 0 521 43680X.

Answer keysThese contain the complete range of possible answers.Answers must coincide exactly with the key (includingcorrect spelling) for them to be correct.

Reading passagesThese are designed to be done in class, though theyare also suitable as homework tasks. The teacher’snotes give detailed advice on teaching different readingtechniques, ways of dealing with different IELTSquestion-types and ways of dealing with readingpassages in class.

Many passages have a vocabulary follow-up. Theseare placed after the passage to give studentsexperience in dealing with reading passages in spite ofdifficult vocabulary. These activities can be done first, ifyou think this will help your students deal with thereading more confidently.

Listening sectionsIn the IELTS test, candidates hear each section onceonly. However, in classroom practice it may often bebeneficial, especially for Intermediate students, to playthese twice. As in the IELTS test, each listening activitycomes in two parts, with a pause in the middle forstudents to read the next set of questions.

Speaking follow-ups and role playsThese follow most reading passages and listeningsections, and are designed to give students anopportunity to express their opinions and ideas on thetopic of the lesson. The teacher’s notes give detailedadvice on how to handle these in class. However, please note that in the IELTS test the topics of thespeaking module are not related to the topics dealtwith in other parts of the test.

Writing tasksEach of these contains an introduction to the topic andpractice in planning answers to writing tasks. They alsocontain sample answers to the task with exercisesbased on them. When the exercises have beencompleted correctly, the answers should serve asmodels for your students when they do their ownwriting tasks. The sample answers are followed bywork on useful structures or vocabulary. The finalactivity is a similar writing task for students to dothemselves. This can be given for homework or, if youthink it is more suitable, as class work.

SpeakingThese activities are designed to give practice in thethree parts of the speaking module of the IELTS test.In the test, the speaking module takes 11–14 minutes,so it is probably not a good idea to do all theseactivities at the same time. Photocopy and cut up afew activities to fill ten- or fifteen-minute gaps in yourlessons on different days. Read the teacher’s notes foradvice on how to manage these activities in class.
