Installing Egroupware

How to install Egroupware on a computer running Windows 2000, XP or 2003.

There are other ways of installing the necessary its and pieces, ut the method elow

seems to e the most straightforward for the non!e"pert...

1. Download the necessary files

#. $o to www.egroupware.org, go to the %&ownloads% section in the 'ontents

menu on the left, and loo( under %)atest stale *ersion%. +ou should see a lin( to

%fficial ... pac(ages from sourceforge.net%. 'lic( on the lin(, and you will eta(en to the -ourceforge download page. Here you will find three different .ip

files /and some other files too, which are for installing on )inu".

eGroupWare-xyz.zipis the main Egroupware program, which you definitelyneed to download.

eGroupWare-egw-pear-xyz.zipis the %pear% pac(age, which you will only needif you want to use Egroupware1s uilt!in mail client /which can e integrated with

the calendar to send automated reminders. ha*e not e"perimented with this, soif you want to use it, you will need to chec( the documentation at

www.egroupware.org.

eGroupWare-gallery-xyz.zipis the %gallery% pac(age%, which you can use tocreate online photo alums inside Egroupware. therwise it1s not needed.

2. $o to http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xapp-windows.htl and follow the

lin(s to download the latest *ersion of the X4PP Windows nstaller /which isone .e"e file. X4PP contains pache, PHP and 4y-5) in one installer, which

ma(es the installation 6uite simple.

3. f you don1t ha*e it already, you may also want to download and install the latest*ersion of 7irefo" from http://www.ozilla.org/en/firefox. This is ecause someparts of the Egroupware install process do not always wor( with nternet

E"plorer.

!. Install "#$%%

#. )aunch the X4PP Windows nstaller which you downloaded. 'hoose the

desired language for the installation, and clic( 8.

type in localhost into the address ar and press Enter. +ou should see the X4PP

&. Install Egroupware ' create %(% header

#. pen the Egroupware ip file which you downloaded at the eginning, and unip

you will ha*e a new folder ):*xapp*htdocs*egroupware, with sufolders andfiles li(e this>

f you see an error instead, ma(e douly sure that your Egroupware files are

unipped into the right place efore trying again.

3. 'lic( on +un installation tests. This will test whether all Egroupware

components are wor(ing properly.fter the test, you will see a report something li(e this /the screenshot shows the

ottom of the report.

Each item will e shown with one of three symols>

o green tic,/8

o yellow lightning olt/a warning.

t1s normal to see some warnings ! for e"ample ne"t to ciA and )dap,

which you only need if you are setting up a more comple" system. Therewill also e a warning ne"t to Pear /which is a component you may not

need anyway ! see ao*e.

o ared " / prolem which needs to e fi"ed efore you can continue.

This usually means either that X4PP is not wor(ing properly, or there is

some prolem with the files you unipped.

:. f the tests show no prolems, clic( on )ontinue to the (eader #din, at the

ottom of the screen. This will ring you to the header setup page, with a message

at the top saying ou hae not created your header.inc.php yet0 ou can createit now.f you scroll down, you will see a numer of settings which you can fill in.

This is the point where did a lot of head!scratching when was trying to follow

the setup instructions at egroupware.org...Here1s all you need to fill in>

Header PasswordThe password you will need the ne"t time you change any of

the settings on this page. +ou cannot use a lan( password.

The username you will use to configure Egroupware system in

a few moments.The easiest thing at this stage is to (eep the default #din.

The password which goes with the username ao*e. +ou1ll

need this password the first time you log in. +ou cannot use a

lan( password

n 2tep 1you choose which character set to use, according to which languagesyou plan to install. n Egroupware #.=, the default is @T7!A, which gi*es more

fle"iility for installing languages with different character sets.This is also the place to create your dataase ! Fust clic( on the )reate Dataase

'lic( on the Install /all applications utton. When did this, got an errormessage after a few seconds, with no o*ious way of going ac(. f this happens

to you, you can get ac( to the setup screen y typing in

localhost/egroupware/setupinto the address ar and pressing Enter.

2. f your applications ha*e installed successfully, you will see a tic( under 2tep 1 -

2iple #pplication $anageent. f there is a red cross instead, you may need

to clic( the +e-)hec, $y Installationutton.

When -tep # is tic(ed, go to 2tep ! - )onfiguration, and clic( on %Edit current

configuration%. Here you add information aout HTTP pro"y and mailser*er !e*en if you don1t plan to use those features, you need to put something in the

o"es ! some dummy address li(e none.nonewill do. The picture elow shows

3. )et1s mo*e to 2tep & - #din #ccount. 'lic( the )reate adin accountutton.+ou will see a screen li(e this, which is to create the account which you will use

when you first log into your fully set!up Egroupware system.

The only things you need to fill in here are dmin username, dmin passwordand ;e!enter password. Then clic( the 2aeutton at the ottom.

:. 2tep - 3anguage anageentis only needed if you want your users to e ale

to see the user interface in a language other than English. n that case, clic( on the$anage 3anguagesutton, and choose the languages you want for the userinterface. 'trlGclic( lets you select multiple languages. Then clic( the Install

utton.

When the )anguage installation is finished, you are not ta(en ac( to the setupscreen automatically ! you need to clic( on %2etup $ain $enu% in the left

column.

9ow you can log in with the username and password you created in step 3 ao*e.

f the login is successful, you should see something li(e this>

9ow you can go on to custoise your Egroupware setupto suit the needs of

your users.
