Configuring COS SD & INSIGHT SB on a Windows PC for Online Testing

Introduction

This Quick Reference Guide walks a new user through the three parts of installing and configuring a Central Office Services (COS) Service Device and the INSIGHT Secure Browser on a single Windows PC for online testing.

• Part 1: Install the COS Service Device software on the Windows PC.

• Part 2: Using the DRC INSIGHT Portal (Portal), create a COS Device Toolkit configuration that uses the Service Device.

• Part 3: Install the INSIGHT Secure Browser software on the PC and register the PC to the COS Device Toolkit configuration as a testing device.

Important:• These instructions apply to creating a specific testing environment in which the INSIGHT Secure

Browser and a COS Service Device are installed on a single Windows PC. For more general installation and configuration instructions, refer to the DRC INSIGHT Technology User Guide.

• These instructions assume that neither the INSIGHT Secure Browser nor a COS Service Device is already installed on the Windows PC. If either the INSIGHT Secure Browser or a COS Service Device is installed, please contact DRC Customer Service at 1-855-787-9615.

• You must have System Administration rights on the PC to install either a COS Service Device or the INSIGHT Secure Browser.

• You may want to print these instructions—while the INSIGHT Secure Browser is running (Part 3), you cannot access other applications on your PC.

PC System Requirements

Both the COS Service Device software and the INSIGHT Secure Browser software may be installed to test one student at a time (one student testing concurrently) on a single, 64-bit Windows PC that meets the following system requirements:

RAM: 2 GB available Processor: 2x dual-core i3 at 2.4 GHz Disk Space: 10 GB available

Part 1: Install the COS Service Device Software on the PC

Important: Install the COS Service Device software on a computer that will be powered on when test content is automatically updated. If the computer is not on or is unavailable, it will not be updated. Whenever you restart a computer that has the COS Service Device software installed, or anytime you plan to use the COS Service Device for testing, verify that the COS Service Device software and test content are up to date before you attempt to test.

1. DRC provides an easy-to-use wizard to install the COS Service Device software. To launch the wizard and start the installation, log on to the Portal using the Windows PC and a Chrome or Firefox browser, navigate to All Applications (or My Applications)–General Information–Downloads, and click on the Central Office Services (COS) Installer download icon ( ) for Windows. If you cannot access this link, contact DRC Customer Service at 1-855-787-9615.

Important: Before you download, click View System Requirements from the Downloads page to verify that your PC meets the system requirements for both the INSIGHT Secure Browser and the COS Service Device.

2. After you download the installation program, click on coinstaller.exe to launch the wizard and start the installation. You must have administrator privileges to do the installation. When the Setup - COS Service Device window displays, click Next to continue.

3. The Installation Folder window displays. You must indicate where to install the COS Service Device and where to store downloaded content. The default location for the COS Service Device software is C:\Program Files\CentralOffice and the default location for the COS Service Device to store downloaded content is C:\Program Files\CentralOffice\content_fs.

Click Next to select the default locations, or Browse... to select different locations. DRC recommends using the default locations.

4. The Proxy Host window displays. This window allows you to specify a separate proxy server for the COS Service Device.

• If you are planning to use a proxy server, enter the URL of the server in the Proxy Host field and click Next.

• If you are not planning to use a proxy server, leave the field blank and click Next.

5. The Ready to Install window displays. The window indicates the amount of disk space the installation will require. Ensure there is a sufficient amount of disk space to continue with the installation. Click Install to continue (or Cancel to exit the installation).

6. The Installing Central Office window displays, indicating the progress of the installation.

Note: The installation process can take 20–30 minutes.

7. The Configure Service Ports window appears. On this window you specify the port to use for Content Hosting (labeled the Base port). The COS Service Device software uses the base port to determine which ports to use for the Content Downloading, Relay, and Restricted Proxy services (labeled the Additional ports). The ports are four consecutive numbers, but you only need to enter the base port number in the Base port field.

After you specify the base port, the COS Service Device automatically selects the next three consecutively numbered ports. For example, if you specify 11223 for the base port, COS also attempts to use ports 11224, 11225, and 11226.

Note: COS Service Device software requires four port numbers, even if the device being configured will not use all of them. Usually, you can use the default port values of 55222, 55223, 55224, and 55225.

After you select your ports, but before you click Next, click Test to verify that the ports selected are available on the device.

• If the Installer dialog that displays indicates that the ports are not available, select a different base port and repeat this step until you have ports that are available.

• If the Installer dialog indicates that the ports are available, click OK and Next (or Cancel to exit the installation).

Important: To avoid conflicts and verify that no other device is using these ports, you can enter the command netstat -a from a command prompt to display a list of the ports currently being used.

8. Two things now occur at the same time: The Completing the COS Service Device Wizard window appears and the Portal screen is launched.

Important: From the Completing the COS Service Device Wizard window that appears, highlight, copy, and save the URL that displays—you can use it to resume the process at this point (if necessary) without re-installing COS Service Device.

Click Finish in the Completing the COS Service Device Wizard window.

In Part 2 of the process you create a COS Device Toolkit configuration that uses your Service Device. DRC provides another easy-to-use wizard to help you with this process (see “Part 2: Create a COS Device Toolkit Configuration for the PC” on page 4).

Part 2: Create a COS Device Toolkit Configuration for the PC

1. Log on to the Portal. The End User License Agreement for DRC Software window displays. Read the agreement, check the I Agree checkbox, and click Accept (you must accept the agreement to continue).

2. The COS Device Toolkit configuration displays in the Configuration Wizard. Enter the name for the COS Service Device into the COS Device Toolkit to help you identify it. The name displays anytime you view the COS Service Device in the COS Device Toolkit. Click Next.

Step 2 of the wizard displays. To enable automatic software updates of the INSIGHT Secure Browser, select Enable Auto Updates.

• If you select Enable Auto Updates, the INSIGHT Secure Browser software is updated automatically (if the device is on and connected to the network).

• If you do not select Enable Auto Updates, DRC notifies you whenever an update to the INSIGHT Secure Browser software is available and you must update the software manually.

When you are ready, click Next.

3. When the Locations page appears, select a testing program from the Testing Program drop-down menu. Then, start typing a district name, school name, or site code in the Site filter. When you locate the district or school name to which you want to register the configuration and its associated COS Service Devices and testing devices, click Add Location. When you are ready, click Next.

Important: You can select any site for which you have access as defined by the COS Device Toolkit permission. You must click Add Location to continue. At any time after you add a location, you can click Remove (to the right of the location) to remove it.

4. The COS Device Toolkit Content Management page displays. Set Content Management to Yes. The test content for the selected administrations and accommodations will be downloaded automatically to your COS Service Device. The default value is all available administrations and accommodations. If you need to save space on the device, you can de-select unneeded administrations and/or accommodations. After you make your selections, click Next.

5. On the Content Hosting page, verify that Content Hosting is set to Yes.

Important: With Content Management set to Yes, the current COS Service Device appears as the first content source. Do not attempt to add content sources.

6. Click Complete. When the Confirm Configuration dialog box displays, click Continue.

7. The configuration that you just created displays on the Configurations tab in the COS Device Toolkit dashboard. As shown below, copy and save the Org Unit ID that displays beneath the configuration name—you will use this ID to register your PC as a testing device in Part 3 (see “Part 3: Install the INSIGHT Secure Browser Software on the PC and Register the PC to the COS Device Toolkit Configuration” on page 6).
