R. F. CASTELLVI

Brigadier General, U.S. Marine Corps

Even with the ending of our nation’s longest sustained period of combat, Marine Corps Installations East (MCIEAST) continued to respond to conflicts around the globe. As our fiscal constraints intensified, we persevered in providing the most efficient and effective support to the operational forces and tenant commands in the areas of training, readiness, and deployment of ground, logistics, and aviation forces. Our seven installations supported all branches of the military, their family members, retirees, civilian employees, other government agencies, and contractors who greatly impact the economic health of our states and local communities. In October, the Marine Corps realigned Marine Corps Air Facility Quantico from MCIEAST to Marine Corps Installations Command-National Capital Region. This is the final year their economic data will be included in the MCIEAST regional brochure.

Although MCIEAST experienced substantial fiscal challenges under the Continuing Resolution Authority this year, nearly $9 billion dollars in economic impact was provided to the states of Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. Active duty and retired military, and currently employed and retired civilian wages, totaled more than $5 billion dollars. This contributed greatly to the economic well-being of the states and local communities who support each of these installations. With construction contracts totaling over $361 million dollars, local area businesses, vendors, and contractors were bolstered economically through the purchase of materials, supplies, and services adding additional revenue into these economies. However, significant decreases were noted by our fiscal challenges in the areas of military construction.

As our federal, state, and local budgets continue to narrow, our vital relationships and our dedication to the civic development and economic growth of the states and local communities surrounding our installations becomes even more crucial. We credit the success of the Marine Corps as our great Nation’s finest fighting force to our partnerships with state and local communities. As economic conditions continue to shift, we shall remain resolute together on this path maintaining the economic impact of Marine Corps Installations East with our state and local communities at the forefront.
