Vintage Organs: Introduction

• VintageOrgansisacollectionofpatchescreatedfromtwoofthemosticonicorganseverproduced;theB3andtheContinental.

• EachorganhasbeenfaithfullyrecordedandmappedoutacrosstheMPCpadswith50soundpatchesreadytoloadupandplay‘out-of-the-box’.

Firstdownloadthezipfileviathelinkprovidedafterpurchaseandextractthecontentstoanylocationonyourcomputer.Enterthe‘MPCX-MPCLive-StandaloneEdition’folderandinsideyou’llseeasubfolder‘VintageOrgans’–thisisthefolderwe’regoingtotransfertoyourMPCX/MPCLive.

The16GBinternaldriveonyourMPCisnotexternallyaccessible,solet’sassumeyouhaveaUSBdrivecalled‘MPCDATA’connectedtotheUSBportonyourMPCLive/X(youcanalsotransfertoanSDcardorinternalSATAdrive).

ConnectyourMPCX/MPCLiveviaUSBtoyourcomputerandenter‘controllermode’(MENU>MPC‘chip’>CONTROLLERMODE).Atthispoint,yourUSBdiskwillappearasaremovabledriveinyourcomputer.Ifitdoesn’talreadyexist,createafoldercalled‘Expansions’intherootofyourMPCdisk-nowcopythe‘VintageOrgans’folderinsidethis‘Expansions’folder.Youcannow‘eject’thediskfromyourcomputerandinyourMPCLive/Xreturnto‘Standalone’mode.MakesureyourdiskisconnectedtoyourMPC.NowgotoMENU>BROWSERandclickonthe‘VintageOrgans’thumbnail:

Alltheavailablepatcheswillappearontherighthandsideofthescreen–ifyouhave‘AUDITION>AUTO’enabled(bottomrightofBROWSERscreen)youcantapaprogramfiletohearapreviewofeachpatchbeforeyouloadit.Doubletaptoloadtheinstrumentintoyourprojectandassignittoa‘KEYGROUP’typetrackinyourcurrentsequenceinMAIN.

Install: MPC Software Expansion Browser

Locatethe‘VintageOrgansExpansionInstaller.XPN’file-thisexpansioninstallerissuitableforbothMPCSoftware2.0and1.9.WiththeMPCSoftwareopeninMAINmode,drag&dropthisfileanywhereintheMPCinterfaceandselect‘Import’.

Open theExpansion Browser (‘X’ on your keyboard forMPC Software 2.0, ‘shiftandE’forMPCSoftware1.9),andclickonthe‘VintageOrgans’thumbnail:

Expandthe‘Programs’grouptoviewtheprovidedpatches.Singleclickaninstrumenttohearaprogrampreview.Doubleclickaninstrument(ordraganddrop)toloaditintoyourproject.Allprogramsaretaggedunderthe‘Keys’instrumentfamilywithintheMediaBrowserinMPCSoftware2.0.

IfyouusetheMPCRenaissanceorMPCStudioyoumightprefertousethestandardFileBrowserfromyourcontroller.Simplygotothe‘MPCX-MPCLive-StandaloneEdition’folderandcopythesubfolder‘VintageOrgans’tothelocationonyourcomputerwhereyouusuallystoretherestofyoursoundlibrary(forexample,the‘Documents>MPC’folder).HittheBROWSERbuttoninyour‘bluescreen’MPCcontroller.SelectthePROGRAM‘dataselect’button.YoucannowaccesstheinstrumentsthroughthestandardBrowserinterfacebynavigatingtothe‘VintageOrgans’folderlocation.

Allprogramsaremappedouttoreflectthenoterangeavailableontheoriginalinstrumentsthemselves.FortheHammondB3thisisC1toC6,fortheContinentalthisisC1toC5.Allsamplesaresustainloopedtoallowinfinitesustainonallnotes.Theoriginalorgansarenotvelocitysensitivesotheprogramshavebeenconfiguredtoreproducethiseffect(henceyoucansetFULLLEVEL‘ON’or‘OFF’,itmakesnodifference).

Playing the Instruments with MPC Pads

IfyouareplayingtheinstrumentsusingyourpadsyouwillfindtheplayablenoteswithinbanksC-F.Forexample,thelowestnoteonbothorgansisC1whichinanMPCkeygroupprogramisalwaysmappedtopadC05.Sodon’tpanicwhenthere’snosoundsinbankAorbankB;justselectbankCorhigher.

Additionally,allinstrumentsarefullycompatiblewithPadPerformModewhichcanconfigureyourpadstoonlyplaybacknotesfromspecifiedscales,orcanbeusedtotriggerentirechordsfromeachpad.Withyourinstrumentloaded,gotoPadPerformMode:MPCLive/X/Touch:MODE>PADPERFORM,MPCRen/Studio:PADASSIGN

SelectBANKA,PROGRESSIONS&under‘CHORD’selectyourpreferredprogression&musicalkey.Thechordsoftheprogressionaremappedacrossthe16pads.

InstrumentscanbeplayedusinganattachedMIDIkeyboard.FortheMPCX/LiveyoucanconnectaUSBkeyboardviayourMPC’sUSBport,aBluetoothkeyboardviaPreferences>Bluetooth,orconnectakeyboardviathe5pinMIDIports.ForMPCRenaissance/Studio/TouchyoucanconnectthekeyboardviaaphysicalMIDIcabletotheMPCMIDI‘in’port(aminijack-to-5pinadapterisrequiredfortheTouch/Studio).AlternativelyyoucanconnectaUSBMIDIkeyboardtoyourcomputerandconfigureitastheactiveMIDIinputviaPreferences>MIDI.

AllinstrumentsarestandardMPC‘keygroup’programs,soyoucanedittheprogramstosuityourparticularneeds.Here’ssomecustomisationideas–pleasenotethatallexamplesuseMPCSoftware2.0,buttheprocessisverysimilarinearlierversionsoftheMPCSoftware.

Editing/Adding ‘Vibrato’

OnsomepatcheswehaveusedLFOtoemulatethe‘vibrato’effectfoundintheoriginalinstruments.Thisvibratocanbeeasilyedited,removedoradded.LFOisset‘perkeygroup’sotoeditallkeygroupssimultaneouslyyou’llfirstneedtogotoPROGRAMEDIT>MASTERandunder‘KGSELECT’chooseselect‘All’keygroups.

NowgotoPROGRAMEDIT>LFOMODULATION(F5inbluescreenMPCs)-hereyoucanseethateachkeygrouphasbeenassignedasinewaveLFOwhichmodulates‘pitch’.

Tochangethespeedofthe‘vibrato’,changetheRATEvalue(arateofaround80worksreallywell).Tochangetheintensityofthevibrato,adjusttheLFO>PITCHdestinationvalue;thepitchmodulationbenefitsfrombeingquitesubtle,soavalueof1-3isnormallysufficient.

Changing the Envelope

WithALLkeygroupsselected,gotoPROGRAMEDIT>FILTERENV(F4inbluescreenUI)andyou’llseethedefaultampenvelopesettings–themainparametertoadjustistheRELEASE(AmpRel)whichwillaffecthowabruptlythenotestopsplayingafteryoureleaseit.

Organshaveaveryshortreleasecomparedtoanelectricpiano,sovaluesunder40tendtosoundmorerealistic,whilelongerreleasescanbeusedtocreatemore‘piano’stylereleases.YoucanalsoincreasetheAMPATTACKsettingtoproducesoftersoundingnotes,aswellaschangingAMPSUSTAINandAMPDECAYtoshapeyournotes.

Adding Effects

YoucanapplyeffectsacrossanentireprogramusingthefourinsertsavailableintheprogramchannelstripinMAIN–hitthe‘eye’icontorevealit:

Taponthe‘INSERTS’boxtobringuptheeffectsselectdialogboxwhereyoucaneditsettingsandchangetheappliedeffects.InthebluescreenUI,gotoTRKMIX(SHIFT&PROGMIX)andmakesureMixer:Programsisselectedinthetopleft.HolddownSHIFTtofindwhichboxisassignedtotheprogramyouwishtoeditandusethecursortohighlightthatbox.Intheexamplebelow,theprogramIwanttoeditisinbox4.

HitINSERT(F5)toselectaninsertslottoedit(i.e.hitonceforinsertslot1,twiceforinsertslot2etc.BelowIhaveselectedtheeffectinINSERT2(ReverbMedium).

PressWINDOWtoedittheeffectsettings,orturnthedatawheeltochooseadifferenteffectfromthelist.
