Avoiding Smoke and OdorsNegative Pressure, Shut-down, and Power Failure:To reduce the probability of back-drafting or burn-back in the pellet burning appliance during power failure or shut-down conditions, the stove must be able to draft naturally withoutexhaustbloweroperation.Negativepressureinthehousewillresistthisnaturaldraftifnotaccountedforinthepelletapplianceinstallation.Heatrisesinthehouseandleaksoutatupperlevels.Thisairmustbereplacedwithcoldairfromoutdoors,whichflowsinto lower levels of the house.Vents and chimneys intobasementsandlowerlevelsofthehousecanbecometheconduitforairsupply,andreverseundertheseconditions.Outside AirAnoutsideairkit is recommended inall installations.TheOutsideAirKitmustbeorderedseparately.Pernationalbuildingcodes,considerationmustbegiventocombustionairsupplytoallcombustionappliances.Failuretosupplyadequatecombustionairforallappliancedemandsmayleadtobackdraftingofthoseandotherappliances.Whentheapplianceisroofvented(stronglyrecommended):

Pelletventingpipe(alsoknownasTypeLvent)isconstructedof two layerswith air spacebetween the layers.This airspaceactsasaninsulatorandreducestheoutsidesurfacetemperaturetoallowaclearancetocombustiblesofonly1inch.Thesectionsofpipelocktogethertoformanairtightsealinmostcases;however,insomecasesaperfectsealisnotachieved.ForthisreasonandthefactthattheP-Seriesoperateswithapositiveventpressure,wespecifythatthejointsalsobesealedwithsilicone.Wherepassingthroughanexteriorwallorroof,besuretousetheappropriatepass-throughdeviceprovidinganadequatevaporbarrier.Ventingmanufacturersgenerallyprovidethesepass-throughdevices.Vent Configurations:To reduce probability of reverse drafting during shut-down conditions,Hearth&HomeTechnologies stronglyrecommends:• Installingthepelletventwithaminimumverticalrunof

fivefeet,preferablyterminatingabovetheroofline.• Installingtheoutsideairintakeatleastfourfeetbelow

B. Removing Rear Cover PanelsThe rear cover panels are secured to the stovewith twoscrewseach.These screwsneed only be loosened, notremoved,toremovethepanels.Itisrecommendedthattherearcoversareinstalledaftertheunitisinplaceandtheventpipeisinstalled,topreventcontactwithhotormovingparts.

Flame GuideInstallthecastironflameguideontopoftheburnpot.Makesurethattheflameguideisfullyseatedontheverticalsidesoftheburnpotandthatthebackoftheguiderestsagainstthebodyofthestove.Figure5.3.INSTALLEXHAUSTVENTATCLEARANCESSPECIFIEDBYTHEMANUFACTURER.Mostpelletventpiperequiresaminimumof3"ofclearancetocombustiblematerialsalthoughsomecanbeinstalledat1"clearance.Followtheseinstructionsalongwithalllocalcodesregardinginstallationofthisappliance.Do NOT usemakeshift compromiseswhen installing thisappliance,seriousconsequencesmayresult.Withanyhearthappliance,installationofsmokedetectorsisrecommendedoneverylevelofthehome.Possible causes of smoke detector activation:Paintcuringprocess-Openawindowneartheapplianceforthefirstfewhoursofburning.Exhaustbeingdrawnbackinsidethedwelling-Outsideairconnectiontotheapplianceisnecessary.Ventleakage-Allinteriorseamsandjointsshouldbesealedwithsiliconewhereapplicable.Followventmanufacturersinstructionsforpropersealing.

Room Sensor InstallationTheroomsensorisasmalltemperaturesensorontheendofa60"wire.Thissensorisinstalledmuchlikeastandardwallthermostat.Thereisaremoteroomsensorportontherearoftheunitforeasyexternalconnection.Usestandard18-2thermostatwiretoextendthesensortothedesiredlocation(50'maximum).Theroomsensorshouldbeinstalledinthelocationwhereyouwanttocontrolthetemperature.Distancesofmorethan25feetfromtheunitorinanotherroomarenotrecommended.TheroomsensorisessentialfortheXXV'sexcellentefficiency.NOTE:Itisrecommendedthattheroomsensorbeinstalled,evenifonlyinstalledontherearoftheunitasareturnairsensor.

E. Low Draft Voltage AdjustmentTheseunitsarepre-testedatthefactorywithexactly120VAC,60Hz.Theyarecheckedandadjustedforfireboxtightness,gasketleakage,motoroperationandigniteroperation.TheXXVisthenfactorysetatamid-pointadjustmentandinmostcaseswillnotneedanyadjustments.The factory low draft setting may not be correct for the unit’s permanent installation conditions.ThecontrolboardontheXXVisequippedwithalowdraftadjustmentportlocatedonthecontrolfacejusttotherightof the igniter light. Figure 5.4.This voltageadjustment isprovidedtoallowtheunittobeadjustedforthehouseholdvoltagewheretheunitisgoingtobeinpermanentoperation. The line voltage varies from area to area and often home to home.Thelowdraftvoltageshouldbeadjustedtoachievethemostefficient burnon lowburnor “maintenance”.This voltageadjustmentallowstheinstallertochangethelowvoltagesetpointapproximately10volts.Thisadjustmentshouldbedonebytheinstallerduringsetupbecauseadraftmeterreadingis required toinsurepropersetup.

Combust ion Motor Speed Control

Low draft only set point.The sma l l s t r a i gh tscrewdriverslotisplastic;therefore, the unit canbe adjusted while inoperation.

Iftheunitisnotadjustedproperly,itdoesnotcauseasafetyconcern.Iftheunitisadjustedtoohigh,onlyefficiencyislost.Iftheunitisadjustedtoolow,thelowdraftpressureswitchwillnotallowthefeedmotorortheignitertooperate.Asimpledrafttestshouldbeperformedaftercompletingthefluepipeinstallation.Torecordtheresultsforfuturereference:1. Plugunitintoa120VAC,60HZoutlet.2. Closethehopperlid,frontviewdoor,andtheashpan.

Neitherpelletsorafirearerequiredforthistest.3. Withthemodeselectorinthe“OFF”position,turnthefeed

adjusterto“TEST”.4. Record the high draft_____inW.C. (Normal is -.50 to

-.60)ThecontrolwillbeontheHighDraftforatotalof2minutes.

5. After1minute,thecombustionmotorwillgodowntolowdraft and thedistributionblowerwill goonhigh.Allowapproximately 15 seconds to pass for the combustionmotortoslowbeforecheckingthelowdraft.

6. Ifthelowdraftisbetween-.35and-.45,recordthereading_____ inW.C. If the reading is higher, slowly turn thesetscrewcounter-clockwiseuntilthedraftlowers.Ifthereadingislower,veryslowlyturnthesetscrewclockwiseuntilthedraftincreases.

NOTE: In some cases, the draft may not go as low as -.35 to -.45 even with the set screw completely counter-clockwise. Ideally, you should just set it as low as possible.
