    Upgrading WELLPLAN

This chapter contains important information that you need before proceedingwith the installation. There are sections about upgrading from previousversions of WELLPLAN, hardware requirements of WELLPLAN 1998.7 andlicensing issues.

    Upgrading from Previous Windows Versions

This section outlines the details you will have to consider when updating

    WELLPLAN from previous Windows versions.

    WELLPLAN Database Update

The WELLPLAN data model has changed for the 1998.7 release. As a result, itis necessary to upgrade WELLPLAN 6.0 databases.

An upgrade program is included for WELLPLAN 6.0 Access databases. Thesetup program will automatically detect and offer to upgrade the currentWELLPLAN 6.0 database. If additional databases need to be upgraded, the

upgrade program can be run from the Start menu.

    Data Migration

Most WELLPLAN 5.3.x / 1998.x data is supported by WELLPLAN 1998.7.The WELLPLAN 5.3 Data Import utility is run from the WELLPLAN 1998.7application. Once WELLPLAN is installed, click File on the menu bar andselect Importand WELLPLAN 5.3...and follow the on screen instructions.

WELLPLAN 5.3.x/1998.x tool catalogs can also be imported into

WELLPLAN 1998.7. The WELLPLAN 5 Catalog Import tool can belaunched from the WELLPLAN 1998.7 program group.

    Bitlock Licensing Upgrade Issues

When WELLPLAN 5.3.1 was released a new bitlock licensing system was

introduced, requiring that the previous green Software Security Inc. bitlocks be

replaced with the new Rainbow Sentinel bitlocks. This release continues tosupport the new Rainbow Sentinel bitlocks. No change is necessary.

For those clients who are upgrading from WELLPLAN 5.3 or older, simplyunplug your old bitlock and connect your new one.

    Network Licensing Upgrade Issues

In WELLPLAN 5.3.1 the network licensing system, Netsecur, was enhanced tosupport all Landmark Windows products within the same licensing session andto be easier for the client to configure and implement. That release of Netsecursystem was not compatible with previous versions, so it was necessary toreconfigure your Netsecur system after installing WELLPLAN 5.3.1.

Clients who are upgrading from WELLPLAN 5.3.1 (R98) or 1998.1 (R98Plus) will not need to make any change to their existing Netsecur licensingsystem. Clients who are just now upgrading from WELLPLAN 5.3 or oldershould contact Landmark for your new Netsecur software license. To receiveyour license, contact the license administration team via email([email protected]), the World Wide Web (http://www.lgc.com) or phone (TheAmericas 281-560-1110, option 6, or outside the Americas +44 (0) 1932-832100). Clients who are upgrading from WELLPLAN 5.3.1 can continueusing the network licensing system that was setup when WELLPLAN 5.3.1was setup.

    Network Installation

This section presents a guide to installing WELLPLAN on a network. Theseinstructions are intended to advise Network System Administrators and

WELLPLAN specialists on how to organize WELLPLAN networkinstallations. The average WELLPLAN user does not need to understand the

following in order to use the system on a day-to-day basis.

    Directory Structure

This section discusses the structure of a WELLPLAN network installation. It is

important that the Network Administrator read this section before proceeding

    with a network installation.

A standard installation of WELLPLAN on a Windows NT network uses twodirectories or drive mappings:

    Client Directory -[C]:\Program Files\Landmark\WELLPLAN

The Client directory, on the user's own PC, is where the users local files,

miscellaneous temporary (or scratch) files, and configuration data are

located. Also, various files that are created by the user (reports, graphs and

transfer files) are written here. These files are owned by a particular

    user and are not shared.

A common alternative installation is to place the Client directory for eachuser on the Server as well. This is achieved by placing the Local directory

under each user's Home directory (to use Netware terminology). For

    example:

Client directory in user's home directory

    H:\HOME\USER001\WELLPLAN

The advantage of this is gained in system administration and maintenance.

The disadvantage of this is a slowdown in the performance of the

WELLPLAN system if high network traffic is the norm.

    Server Directory - [F]:\WELLPLAN\SERVER

The Network directory on the server will contain the system files that can

be shared by all users. This directory can also reside on the users PC to

save space on the file server.

    Client Installation

A Client Installation installs the WELLPLAN client directory, which allowsthe user to run the Network installation of WELLPLAN. The following steps

    outline the Client Installation:

    1. The Client Installation can either be launched at the end of the NetworkServer installation or by running the Client Installation Setup Program. The SETUP.EXE is found in the SETUP directory of the NetworkWELLPLAN Server Directory: \Setup\Setup.exe.

    2. The client install is the same as a single user installation, with theexception that the setup type (Single User or Network) can not be chosen.

    WELLPLAN Database

WELLPLAN1998.7 is connected to a MS Access 97 database. It is intended toreside locally, in each users PC. It is not intended to be shared by multiple

users, simultaneously. That functionality will be added in a future release.

The database file, wellplan.mdb, is installed in the \Database

directory, where is the WELLPLAN client directory. It can be moved to

another location, which would require that the path be changed in the ODBC

data source, wellplan. This can be done using the 32 bit ODBC

    Administrator.
