Did You Know…………

The inventor: Earl Silas Tupper

1907 Born on 28 July in Berlin,New Hampshire, the son of a farmer who invented various labour-saving devices.

1928 Takes a course in tree surgery and sets up a tree surgery and landscaping business, Tupper Tree Doctors.

1937 Begins working for DuPont [USA] where, he says later, ‘my education really began’

1938 Leaves DuPont to form Tupper Plastic Co.,subcontracting a lot of work from DuPont.

1945 Produces his fi rst plastic consumer products, including cigarette cases and an unbreakable drinks tumbler.

1947 Files a patent on 2 June for: ‘Open mouth container and nonsnap type of closure therefor ‘[granted 8 November 1949]

1951 Registers the trademark Tupperware in the USA. Brownie Wise [ USA ] conceives the idea of T u p p e r w a r e parties as a development of a sales technique she has used as a representative for Stanley Home Products.

1958 Retires after selling his company for several million dollars.

1965 The trademark Tupperware is registered in Britain.

1983 Tupper dies on 5 October,aged 76.

TUPPERWARE

The famous Tupperware range of resealable plastic food containers was named after its inventor,Earl Silas Tupper, but the range also owes much of its success to Brownie Wise, the woman who conceived the idea of the Tupperware party.

Tupperware has been exhibited at a number of art and design museums including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington,DC.

Brownie Wise, whose sales techniques earned her a position as vice president of Tupperware Home Parties, the sole distributor of Tupperware, often used the catchphrase: ‘If we build the people, they’ll build the business’.

It is estimated that at the turn of the millennium,a Tupperware party started somewhere in the world every 3 seconds.

Life without plastic food containers seems inconceivable now,but when Earl Silas Tupper [USA] was a chemist working for DuPont [USA] during the 1930s,the storage choice was in glass jars, pottery containers or tins. Tupper had the foresight to think that plastics were the materials of the future[though not,at fi rst,for food containers] and in 1938 he left DuPont to set up the Tupper Plastic Company and begin his own research into new plastics.

Tupper’s particular interest was the production of plastics from waste materials and having maintained a good relationship with DuPont, he asked the company for materials with which to experiment. DuPont gave him a quantity of a hard, black plastic known as polyethylene slag,an oil refi ning by-product,from which Tupper succeeded in producing a tough,fl exible, mouldable plastic. He is said to have considered shoe-heels,but it was food containers,fi rst produced in 1945,with which he literally made his name. The inventive leap and aspect of Tupperware he was able to patent[fi led 1947,granted 1949],was the airtight seal, said to have been modelled on an upturned paint tin lid.

Despite the advantages of being airtight,spill-proof and virtually unbreakable,Tupper’s containers did not sell well at fi rst, partly because plastic was seen as an inferior material, but mainly because consumers did not have the knack of ‘burping’ the container to expel excess air and make the airtight seal. The ‘ burping ‘ problem precipitated a social revolution in 1951 when sales representative Brownie Wise[USA] suggested demonstrating the technique to groups of potential customers in their homes. This wise idea soon became known as the Tupperware party and was so successful that Wise was appointed vice-president of Tupperware Home Parties and Tupper took the bold step of removing his products from the shops and selling them purely through home demonstrations.
