UKZN Mathematics is No.1!A recent analysis by Thomson Reuters using their “InCites”

research analysis tool has affirmed the leading role Mathematics at UKZN continues to play in the tertiary education

environment locally and internationally.

UKZN was rated number one in the country among all Mathematics disciplines in the country over the past 10 years. It also compares favourably to such disciplines at other international universities.

When it comes to research output, UKZN wrote the book on it.

1146.51 * times. Results of the recent Department of Higher Education and Training report on the 2010 Institutional research publication outputs, shows

that we published 1146.51* research output units contributing 11.8%* of the country’s total research output (the 3rd highest in the country)

- with output per staff member 105%* of the national norm. In addition, we produced the highest number of books published

by South Africa’s 23 major universities*.

As one of South Africa’s pre-eminent research institutions, UKZN provides a dynamic environment for all facets of the research and innovation spectrum. Research activities span the natural, biomedical, social sciences and the humanities.

Research income in 2011 was R676 million. This includes R105 million raised by the UKZN Foundation in project-related grants. According to the Department of Higher Education and Training report, the University is the third highest in terms of total research output, having contributed 11.8% of the country’s total. The research output per staff member was 105% of the national norm.

FACT FILEn UKZN is the only university in South Africa to offer a degree in Agricultural (Bioresources) Engineering that is fully accredited by the Engineering Council of South Africa.

n The Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa (CAPRISA), located on the Medical School campus, is among the largest and most successful research institutes in Africa.

n The multimillion-rand KwaZulu-Natal Research Institute for Tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS (K-RITH), an international centre of scientific research, is located on the Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine campus. K-RITH is a ground breaking partnership between UKZN and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in the United States.

n SIFE-UKZN (Students In Free Enterprise) were the National Champions for the fourth time and they represented South Africa in Malaysia in the SIFE World Cup. SIFE-UKZN is currently placed within the top 16 teams out of 1 500 teams around the world.

UKZN employed 4 329 permanent and long-term contract staff in 2011, of whom 1 579 are academic and 2 750 support staff. Women constitute 55 % of staff. Several women occupy senior leadership positions at the University. UKZN has developed equity strategies and programmes, including the Equity Acceleration Programme, UKZN’s key mechanism for nurturing and developing the next generation of academics.

Of the 42 209 students registered at UKZN in 2011, 20 % were postgraduate students. Women make up 59 % of the student body.

Alternative Access Programmes cater for learners from socially and educationally disadvantaged backgrounds and who are academically underprepared. Approximately 350 disabled students were registered at the University in 2011. The Disability Unit has developed and facilitated a range of services for the special needs of disabled students.

Financial Aid

In 2011 A total amount of approximately R244 million was awarded to students in terms of LOANS (National Student Financial Aid Scheme of South Africa [NSFAS] administered - including Final year student funding and UKZN Loan funding); an amount of R228 million in bursaries (Corporates, NSFAS administration, Social responsibility, Deceased Estates) and an amount of R63 million on scholarships (UKZN, National Research Foundation and Deceased Estates).

Residences

The consolidated 2011 budget for all campuses was R140 million. Budget UKZN’s total consolidated revenue in 2011 amounted to R3.4 billion. As at December 2011 the University had aggregate assets of R5.9 billion.

The University is a multicultural environment. In 2011, it was home to 2 582 international students from 96 countries. While the majority of our full-time students are from the SADC region and the rest of Africa, UKZN attracts full-time students from China, India, Europe, the USA, and other parts of the world. College of Health Sciences

The College of Health Sciences is the only College at UKZN funded simultaneously by five of the largest funders of Biomedical Research (Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Wellcome Trust, Bill and Melinda Gates, Centre for Disease Control and the National Institutes of Health).

The College has specialist paediatric facilities in Speech Language Therapy, Audiology and Optometry.

The Biokinetics Clinic offers high performance training to outstanding sports persons, at both national and provincial levels.

The Centre for Science Access and the UNITE Programme both operate within the College andare two of the country’s leading access programmes. They provide educational opportunities to undergraduate students from under privileged backgrounds. They now contribute nearly 30% of all graduations in the College.

College of Agriculture, Engineering and Science

CAES represents the largest group of scientists, engineers and technologists under one structure in Africa with over 1400 employees (including academics, administrative staff, specialist technical support staff, tutors, demonstrators, and research support staff).

UKZN has the widest range of Agricultural disciplines (11) at one South African institution. Of the five areas identified as lacking critical skills by the National Education and Training Strategy for Agriculture, viz. agricultural production (plants and animals); agricultural economics; agricultural development; agricultural engineering; and veterinary science; four are addressed by programmes within the College of Agriculture, Engineering and Science.

College of Humanities

The College of Humanities is home to the Centre for Creative Arts (CCA), a renowned multi-disciplinary arts centre of excellence with a global reach and impact that co-ordinates four annual internationally-reputed festivals: Time of the Writer, Durban International Film Festival, JOMBA Contemporary Dance Experience and Poetry Africa. The College’s School of Education offers internationally recognised teacher education programmes across all levels of qualifications in Education and contributes significantly to the South African education system within the three sectors of producing new teachers, up-skilling existing teachers and knowledge production through its research programmes and publications.

College of Law and Management Studies

Of all the Law Faculties/Schools in South Africa, the School of Law at UKZN had the highest number of students who graduated either summa cum laude or cum laude in 2011.

The Chief Justice of South Africa, the Honourable Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng (2012) and the current Judge President of KwaZulu-Natal, the Honourable Justice Chiman Patel (2012) are graduates of our Law School.

Community Engagement

The University has committed itself and all its resources to the common good of society. More than 350 outreach projects are managed by UKZN, ranging from HIV and AIDS projects, to upgrading the skills of Science and Mathematics teachers, to food security and community tourism projects.

Major Community Projects include: Maths4Stats Project, headed by Professor Delia North was first piloted at UKZN in 2010. It is a training initiative for approximately 450 mathematics educators in KZN, aimed at encouraging the development of mathematics education as an important bedrock for statistics.

Professor Albert Modi heads a community project at Umbumbulu, which has led to previously-disadvantaged farmers supplying Woolworths with organic madumbis; the project has led to another female youth-controlled vegetable production project for local marketing. Professor Graham Jewitt runs a community project linked to the improvement of land quality and water conservation in Potshini near Bergville. Northern Cape Teacher BSc project - UKZN raised funding (from BHP Billiton and Nedbank) to train 25 high school teachers from the Northern Cape to get their BScs. The project is co-ordinated by Helen Moonsamy.

The Kenneth Gardens Intervention Project run by the School of Built Environment and Development Studies is a collaborative community initiative between UKZN and the Durban University of Technology. Residents at Kenneth Gardens, the largest housing development in the city, now have access to their own on-site clinic offering services in homeopathy, community nursing and nutrition.

Ujamaa Centre for Community Development and Research under the School of Religion, Philosophy and Classics has pioneered an interface between academic biblical studies (and theology) and local forms of biblical interpretation, within the context of social transformation. The Ujamaa Centre has worked extensively throughout South Africa, across the African continent, and has an international reputation for its community-based work and research.

The School of Religion, Philosophy and Classics’s Sinomlando Centre for Oral History and Memory Work in Africa aims at building resilience in people and communities through oral history and memory work. The Oral History Programme runs research projects on aspects of South African social, cultural and religious history and assists local communities in retrieving their histories. The Memory Work Programme provides psychosocial support through storytelling to children and families experiencing adversity.

The Centre for Adult Education (CAE) under the School of Education runs the Learn with Echo project. It promotes non-formal education for adults through its weekly supplement in The Witness newspaper which enables it to reach the most marginalised sectors: adults without basic education. This project has been running for 22 years.

The Umthombo Youth Development Foundation Scholarship Scheme is headed by Dr Andrew Ross from the Department of Family Medicine. The scholarship scheme provides scholarships to students from rural areas who have obtained places to study health science courses at a university. The project was initially restricted to Umkhanyakude but now it covers the whole of KZN. (www.umthomboyouth.org.za)

The Department of Paediatrics and Child Health projects led by Professor Anna Coutsoudis include the Garden project and life skills programme being conducted for HIV affected persons living in Cato Manor:

1. Training mothers to become breastfeeding peer supporters in Cato Manor; working with the Lower Umfolozi Hospital, Empangeni to set up a system of volunteer peer supporters to encourage mothers with breastfeeding and general child care; and:

2. Working with Lower Umfolozi Hospital, Empangeni to set up a donor breastmilk bank. 39

CAPRISA’s “Reach for the Stars” programme develops and nutures young learners into critical thinkers and future scientists. It targets learners from Grade 10, 11 and 12 specifically from schools in the rural district of Vulindlela where there are high levels of poverty and limited resources. To achieve its objectives the project supports learners through mentorship, and seeks to develop and enhance their skills in literacy, mathematics and science.

HIV Pathogenesis Programme (HPP) - Study participants in the HPP research projects receive more personalised healthcare than is possible through government hospitals. HIV-infected study subjects have access to advice and support at any time and receive formal clinical reviews, with viral loads and CD4 count measurements. Participants are also taught about clinical care, public health, financial management and prospects of tested intervention being available to the study population if proven effective.

The UKZN Optometry Department has been in partnership with the Islamic Medical Association (IMA) since August 2009 with the Rigid gas permeable contact lenses (RGP) contact lens project. UKZN Optometry students also help service the IMA Marianhill Eye clinic.
