WARM-UP

UFW (United Farm Workers) founded by Cesar Chavez in 1962

Worked to improve conditions for poor migrant workers through non-violent protests such as hunger strikes

Most famous campaign was a boycott of California table grapes which led to a labor agreement in 1970

MIGRANT WORKERS

“In almost every professional field, in business and in the arts and sciences, women are still treated as second-class citizens. It would be a great service to tell girls who plan to work in society to expect this subtle, uncomfortable discrimination--tell them not to be quiet, and hope it will go away, but fight it. A girl should not expect special privileges because of her sex, but neither should she "adjust" to prejudice and discrimination”

THE FEMININE MYSTIQUE

For women in early 50’s and 60’s, the assumption was that their place was only in the home

1963 Betty Friedan wrote The Feminine Mystique which helped launch the women’s movement and challenged that assumption

AKA “women’s lib” advocated equality between men and women

Friedan also founded NOW (National Organization for Women) which promoted feminist causes.

Phyllis Schlafly was herlargest opponent; arguedwomen liked staying home

WOMEN’S MOVEMENT

Concerned with preserving the Earth’s resources and species of life

Rachel Carson published Silent Spring discussing how pesticides poison the environment (DDT). This began the modern environmentalist movement.

U.S. celebrated its fi rst Earth Day in April 1970Nixon established the EPA (Environmental

Protection Agency)Al Gore became a notable figure in the movement

and wrote An Inconvenient Truth claiming that global warming is largely man-made

ENVIRONMENTALIST MOVEMENT

Conservatism is the belief that government should not try to regulate too much

Places such as Orange County, California and the Deep South embraced this movement

Believe in low taxes, personal freedoms, and property rights

Distrust of social movements such as Johnson’s “Great Society”

Some argued that personal property rights were being violated when the government forced business owners to serve African Americans (believed they should freely choose who to serve)

CONSERVATIVE MOVEMENT

A conservative “hero” was an Arizona Republican Senator Barry Goldwater

He personally did NOT support segregation, but believed in states’ rights and property rights

Lost to Johnson in the election of 1964However, Goldwater was able to win the Republican

nomination in the SouthThis ended the “solid South” (which was largely

Democratic), but southerners were willing to put conservative ideals above party loyalty

CONSERVATIVE MOVEMENT

Anti-establishment cultural phenomenon

Response to civil rights movement

Included anti-war, feminism, environmentalism

Influenced by media, music, changing lifestyles,

technology, drugs

HIPPIE COUNTER-CULTURE MOVEMENT
