Inspire Math Experts with a
I use the calculator license to inspire my students to become “math experts.” Once students have a grasp on multi-digit addition and subtraction with regrouping, I want to reward their hard work! We all know that careless errors sometimes run rampant during this unit until students have truly mastered this skill. To speed up this process, I offer my students the chance to earn a calculator license. This license will certify that they are experts with these operations and may now use calculators to assist them in future math work. To earn this license, I have students complete 5 math problems a day. These problems are written horizontally (requiring them to stack the numbers correctly on scratch paper to solve) and contain a mix of addition and subtraction. They have to truly be experts who work CAREFULLY to earn this license! If students get all 5 math problems correct for 3 days in a row, they have officially proven themselves to me and earn their license! I laminate them and tape them to students’ desks so we all know they have permission to use calculators in future work!
