AURESetsuko’s first encounter with metalworking was when she was an art student at a University in Tokyo, where she majored in Japanese blacksmithing, ‘Tankin’, a traditional technique which was used for delicate interior decoration pieces as well as on swords used in the past by Samurai warriors. This technique involves heating metal with high extensibility, such as gold, silver, iron, copper, and beating it with a hammer to create an effect of layered metal which different brightness, nuances and contrast.

Revelling in the philosophy of such work – a piece of metal being shaped and molded according to the will and design of human beings, Setsuko is continually reminded of our malleability and propensity to change. Then, she spent 5 years in Florence,

Italy, learning jewellery production techniques and also pursued her own production technique, blown away by the organic nature and vitality of jewellery crafted there.

With Setsuko’s dual training in Florentine jewellery making and Japanese blacksmithing, she created “AURE”, an Italian word meaning a person’s unique atmosphere and quality.

MASAHIROKIKUNO

Despite being very young, Masahiro Kikuno started his watchmaking career and has always been making wristwatches by hand in a rigorously traditional manner, inspired by the craftsmen who built Wa-Doken, traditional Japanese clocks which keep temporal hours rather than constant time. He makes nearly the entire watch himself, even

the cases. Kikuno’s even produced his own Mokube-game dial by hammering, rolling and beating copper, gold and silver to produce a woodgrain pattern dial.

Kikuno’s path to watchmaking was an unusual one, starting as a small arms technician then enrolling in a watchmaker course at the Hiko Mizuno

College of Jewelry. There, he produced his first timepiece, a time-only wristwatch with a retrograde display. Then, Kikuno took it upon himself to learn more eventually building a tourbillon in .

Kikuno rose to prominence in with his Wa-Dokei, Temporal Hour Watch’. Much like traditional Japanese watches of the Edo era, this watch measures temporal hours, which change in length with the seasons, depending on the duration of daylight.
