The HDC Boosters are once again participating in Birdies for Charity (BFC), the special Quad City fundraising program presented in cooperation with the John Deere Classic. Only flat donations will be accepted this year. BFC will no longer be accepting per birdie pledges. 100% of pledges made on cards with Bird Number 127 are received by the HDC Booster Organization.

Funds from BFC are used to support the many wonderful projects the Boosters conduct each year, including participants’ social activities, like dances, bowling leagues, parties, and picnics. The Boosters also fund advocacy efforts and staff appreciation events, and they support many special projects to enhance the lives of individuals at HDC.

Matching dollars are also available, so donations leverage even more money! Typically, 5% to 10% of pledges are matched through the program. Along with making a contribution to a worthy cause, there are opportunities to win exciting prizes by guessing the number of birdies scored in the tournament. Please clip the form here and return all pledge forms to HDC. Pledge forms can be scanned and emailed to [email protected], dropped them off at any HDC location, or mailed to: HDC, 3402 Hickory Grove Road, Davenport, IA 52806. Forms will not be mailed out separately this year, so please use the form provided here.

One person was deeply involved with HDC as the parent of a longtime participant. She was a dedicated volunteer, a generous supporter, and a strong advocate. The other person was not known by most people at HDC. Both made a difference in the lives of HDC participants. Both made plans to support those participants after they were no longer around. Janet Kademan’s daughter, Judy, was a participant in nearly every one of HDC’s programs. For years, Judy completed jobs in the sheltered workshop before she eventually transferred to the Personal Independence Services program to attend classes and enjoy a more relaxed daily routine. After many years living with her parents, Judy moved into an HDC group home. As her health condition changed, she called the Residential Center her home before she passed away last year. Janet was by Judy’s side throughout the many different phases of her daughter’s life.

Janet and her husband, Bob, were among the parents who fought to make sure services were available to their daughter and others with special needs long before those services were well established. After all the hard work that they and others did in those early years, the Kademanswanted to ensure services continued after their lifetimes. When making plans, they made sure Judy’s needs were met first, and after Judy’slifetime, they left their remaining assets to the place that meant so much to their family when they were living.

Best-Laid Plans: The Tale of Two Donors

Bonnie Reinhart was the much-loved sister of a former HDC employee. She was also the aunt of a participant who enjoyed services at HDC for many years. Bonnie was not a familiar face around HDC, nor would her name be widely recognized, yet Bonnie realized the impact HDC had on her niece and other people withdisabilities. To help continue that impact, Bonnie decided to support HDC in a meaningful way. She designated HDC as one of the beneficiaries of her workplace retirement account, so when Bonnie passed away last year, she was able to make a generous gift to support a cause she admired during her lifetime.

HDC is grateful to all those who make provisions in their wills or estate plans. Whether we know about them in advance like the gift from the Kademans or whether they are unexpected, like Bonnie Reinhart’s, they are always welcomed, appreciated, and used tobenefit the lives of the individuals served at HDC.

For more information about how to include HDC in your plans, visit the HDC website at www.handicappeddevelopment.org or contact the Development Office at 563-391-4834.

Judy Kademan enjoyed the time she lived at the HDC Residential Center until her passing in February 2020.

Estate plans that include gifts to HDC ensure the future of services and support

projects that help people to succeed, to achieve, to grow, and to be happy.

WE ARE THANKFUL FOR The TJX Foundation awarded HDC a $2500 grant to help purchase a new autobagger for HDC Enterprises. Having an additional machine that packages parts expandsEnterprises’ capabilities. That translates into more work that can be completed for area companies and more individuals with disabilities employed in the Enterprises area. ABOVE: Enterprises Associate Courtney Selby bags parts for John Deere with a newly acquired autobagging machine.

Center’s roof. Thank you to the City of Davenport and all who made this project possible.

The Rotary Club of Bettendorf supported

HDC with a $1320 grant to upgrade the sensory room at

the Personal Independence Services building on Brady Street. The sensory room provides many

different items for participants to feel, see, and hear. By providing a sense of calm and comfort in a safe

environment, the sensory room helps people learn to self-regulate their behaviors, calm themselves when they’re troubled, and ultimately improve their focus.

Angie Manders’ birthday wasn’t quite the same in 2020, nor was her Christmas, Thanksgiving, or any other holiday, for that matter. Nothing was quite the same for Angie and all the folks at the Residential Center (RC) while they remained safely in their home to avoid exposure to COVID-19.

Living with over 50 other people, many of whom experience significant disabilities and/or fragile health conditions, Angie and her housemates were squarely in the middle of the “high risk” category during the pandemic. To minimize that risk, precautions were taken that included eliminating visitors, as well as pausing any trips outside of the building for residents. While most residents usually spend their days occupied with activities at the Personal Independence Services program on Brady Street, for over a year, they stayed home.

Staff at the RC did their best to keep families connected to their loved ones during the moratorium on visits. “They did a great job keeping us informed about how Angie was doing,” said parent Linda Manders, “It was tough though. She isn’t able to understand what’s going on and why we weren’t there, but knowing she was being well cared for was a huge comfort for us.”

With most residents and many staff vaccinated, things are ever-so-slowly returning to some pre-pandemic routines. Visits with family members, albeit still limited, are now allowed. Recently, Jeff and Linda Manders reunited with their daughter for the first time in over a year. “We were over the moon excited. I didn’t sleep

A Quarterly Snapshot: HDC Residential Center

the night before,” said Linda. Angie was excited too, judging by the smile on her face and the squeal that erupted when she saw her parents. As the weather warms, residents look forward to getting outdoors and enjoying the sensory trail in their own backyard. It’s been a long time since they have played the outdoor musical instruments, took a walk on the path, watched the butterflies, or participated in outdoor games.

HDC Residential Center Program Director Keyandra Harrington said the last year waschallenging but, “The residents’ health and well-being is always the number one priority. We did what we had to do to keep everyone safe. My hope is that this year’s birthdays, holidays, and celebrations will look much different than they did last year.”

After months of separation, Angie Manderswas able to reunite with her parents andenjoy some time outside with her mother,Linda Manders

After the cancellation of the 2020 Cocktail Party/Auction and Golf Outing, the HANDS Auxiliary was determined to bring some normalcy back and decided to hold their annual “Beat the January Blues” trivia night in 2021. Keeping everyone’s safety in mind, the virtual trivia night went off, not without a hitch, but with good participation and lots of fun. Thirteen teams and nearly 100 trivia participants gathered in small groups in a location of their choosing to answer questions, enjoy each other’s company, and support HDC. Thank you to all who participated or donated to make this event successful.

Now, it’s time to focus attention on the much-anticipated HANDS Golf Outing. This year’s golf outing WILL happen on Monday, June 7th, and it will take place at the same location the event has enjoyed for many years, the beautiful Crow Valley Golf Club. The Cocktail Party/Auction, which is typically held the night before the golf outing, will be a separate event, scheduled for October 2nd. As always, golf registrations include complimentary admission to the auction party for every golfer and a guest, so golfers should keep that date available.

This year’s golf outing will be a scramble format with an 11 a.m. shotgun start. Pin events, scoring prizes, and on-course beverages will remain the same as always. New this year will be a traveling meat wagon on the course for lunch, which is sure to be a crowd pleaser. Following golf, players can gather for a safe outdoor get-together with hors d’oeuvres when prizes will be awarded and raffle winners announced.

Cost remains the same as previous years at $200 per golfer. This registration fee includes green fees, cart, golfer gift, lunch, beverages, after party, AND free admission to the auction on October 2nd for each golfer and a guest.

Please visit the HDC website for registration information or contact Mary Egger at 563-391-4834 or [email protected] to register today. Sponsorship opportunities are also still available.
