residents, corporate partners and so many others. Your fervent commitment to service has inspired us to achieve record accomplishments that have distinguished our ministry.”

As Judee bids farewell, many are looking forward to building upon her impact under the leadership of John Cochrane, President and CEO of HumanGood. “As we reflect upon and celebrate all that we have accomplished so far, I have never felt more excited about our future,” said John.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Gifts of Grace, the fund that upholds the delivery of exceptional experiences across all of our communities.

So much has changed during my service as Chief Operations Officer and eventual President and CEO, but through it all, I remain grateful and humbled by one heartwarming constant: the commitment of our team members across each and every community.

Your boundless loyalty has guided me over the years — loyalty that transcends community, job title, years of service and more. I thank you for channeling my leadership for two very special decades and for affording me the privilege to work alongside you.

Moving forward, the Presby family will be well served by the leadership of John Cochrane. I have known John for several years and continue to marvel at his creativity and innate gift for staying ahead of the curve. HumanGood and Presby are each distinguished by their rich heritages and common missions. I have every confidence that you will appreciate the opportunities of this new partnership.

As 2020 draws near, I am often asked: “Judee, what’s next for you?” Rest assured that I will embrace my role as President Emeritus. Further, I pledge my continued efforts to help address quality of life issues where I feel I can make the greatest impact, including the boards of directors for the Philadelphia Corporation for Aging and the HumanGood Affordable Housing program.

And, when I have the pleasure of enjoying a few quiet moments, the sunset of Dunedin — my Florida retreat — will serve as a most glorious backdrop for reminiscing about the fulfillment you helped to create.

Thank you and God bless,

Judee M. Bavaria President and CEO Emeritus, effective January 2020, Presby’s Inspired Life

HeartFrom the

This year’s Inspired Service Recognition

event, which is featured on pages one and two, was indeed an

occasion that I will always remember. The impressive gathering of family, friends,

residents, corporate partners and our new colleagues from HumanGood caused me to

pause and reflect upon my wonderful years with all of you.

It is indeed awe-inspiring for me to recall the growth and accomplishments that we have recorded together while upholding the vision of my mentor, the Rev. Paul White, who led our ministry for more than 30 years.

I will always remain grateful for his leadership, along with your individual and collective contributions on so many levels.

Without question, our team members have been at the heart of every success during my tenure. Your talents and commitment ushered in many milestones, including expanding the delivery of exceptional experiences for residents of our Affordable Housing communities throughout 12 buildings at the launch of my career with Presby in 2005 and the current complement of 36 communities. I will remain forever proud of the repositioning we conducted within our Life Plan communities and the historical “Call to Care” capital campaign, which helped to establish the Joseph C. Scott Medical Center at Rydal Park. And, how exciting it was to plan and witness the addition of Parkside to that campus!

The capital enhancements listed above are perhaps some of the more obvious highlights of just how much we have accomplished as a team. However, I won’t soon forget many of the celebrations we have enjoyed together, such as 11 Inspired Service events, the ever-popular Distinguished Service Recognition and Service Awards dinners and, of course, the year-long series of events promoting the 60th anniversary of our ministry in 2015.

Presby profile

success we have experienced. One of the reasons we did this affiliation, despite the geographic distance, is that we knew we were affiliating with like-minded, mission-oriented people. This has turned out to be true beyond our highest hopes.

What excites you most when you consider the future for our united organization

Everything! We have such strong histories and missions, and the future is all about honoring a rich heritage while finding new ways to expand our reach and improve our service. The opportunities are particularly strong in the area of Affordable Housing. I am convinced that there is no organization doing more or doing better at meeting the needs of low-income seniors. We build great buildings, run them superbly on shoestring budgets and provide service coordination that ensures our lowest- income residents have the ability to live their best lives. And the need is overwhelming. An important part of our future is meeting the demand for something we already do extremely well.

How do you expect team members to benefit?

We will be able to benefit in myriad ways. Improved benefits, access to career development opportunities across the country, better development and training and improved education opportunities are just a few of the obvious benefits that come from scale. Additionally, this is another area where we will be able to deploy technology to dramatically improve the team member experience. We know there is going to be a labor shortage for the next several decades as we have more people over the age of 65 than under the age of 21, and technology will allow us to reach and engage team members in new and meaningful ways.

Just six months ago, Presby’s Inspired Life and HumanGood announced a new partnership. The united organization serves approximately 13,000

residents across 21 Life Plan and 95 Affordable Housing communities. Here, President and CEO John Cochrane highlights his vision for a future steered by ardent values and a commitment to influencing the lives of residents and team members in meaningful ways.

QuestionsFor our readers who remain curious, please explain the motivation behind the exciting new partnership between HumanGood and Presby’s Inspired Life.

The motivation, in a nutshell, is mission impact. The question we continually ask (and are asked by our boards) is: how can we increase the reach and effectiveness of our mission? How can we broaden our impact and improve services to our current residents and customers, and how can we expand that reach to include customers we are not serving today? We have an ambitious brand promise to inspire the best lives of those we serve, and this affiliation is about bringing that brand promise to life in larger and new and relevant ways to our market.

Six months later, how would you characterize the integration?

The affiliation is, knock on wood, going better than I would have ever hoped. The Presby, now HumanGood East, team has been supportive, engaged and focused on having a positive impact on the lives of team members and residents alike and has really been the driver behind the

What should our residents anticipate as we move forward?

Our residents should anticipate that we will understand the disruption confronting our field and ensure that our rich histories of faithful service continue for decades to come. We will strive to meet existing expectations while, at the same time, looking for ways to reach incoming residents in meaningful ways. Change is hard, and we recognize that. We also recognize the need to adapt to changing times and circumstances. Fortunately, we have been able to do that through our 70-year histories.

Is there a strategic focus that team members can look forward to learning more about and embracing?

Yes! As we look back out at our communities, our residents, our team members and our prospects, we know we need to focus on creating great experiences for every one of these groups. We live in an experiential economy, and we need to be sure that we are delivering great experiences in ways that all of our constituents value. As current and future generations of elders continue to reimagine what it means to age successfully, we need to ensure that the experiences we provide match those changing expectations. But that is only a start. We also need to do a much better job of identifying and deploying technologies that can help us improve the team member experience, improve our business practices and reach new residents. And, finally, we need to grow. We need to grow our mission and continue to position HumanGood as the leadership organization in our field.

What values are driving that strategic focus?

Our core values really start with the passion our team members have for the work we do. One thing that becomes abundantly clear on my community visits is the deep vein of passion all of our team members have for their communities, the residents, families and each other. And that passion really is the bedrock value of HumanGood. From there, we need to be inclusive in an intentional and thoughtful way. We need our communities and our workforce to reflect the world in which we live and operate. We must be innovative and willing to change if we are to continue our success. Also, we need courage to confront both the disruption and the opportunity. Not changing is always easier, and it is almost always wrong. Finally, we must have impact. Real achievement doesn’t come from intention; it comes from taking action that produces a desired and valuable result.

Explain “Inspire the best life possible.” What does that mean for residents? Team members?

The concept of the best life is obviously very personal. Part of what we need to do is to help people understand what that best life means for them. And the word ‘possible’ is included to highlight the reality that every person has potential — at every stage and condition of life — to have a best life. Our commitment is to help identify and actualize that best life for every resident in every condition. And it is interesting that you ask about team members, because our brand promise doesn’t just include our team members; it starts with them. If we can’t inspire the best life for our team members, how can we possibly expect them to inspire the best life for our residents, their families and our communities?

What advice do you offer to team members as the integration proceeds?

I am often asked by team members what they can do to support integration. The best advice I can give them is to do their jobs to the absolute best of their ability. If we all focus on doing that, the integration will be just fine, and our brand promise to our residents and stakeholders will be well on its way to being fulfilled. Stay focused, ask questions, help each other out, look for opportunities to do better every day, and we will be just fine!

The Rydal Park landscape is being transformed to heighten the outdoor experience for residents, team members and visitors alike.

Construction of two new timber bridges is underway as part of the Renaissance at Rydal campaign. Once completed in early 2020, these state-of-the art passages will provide improved, alluring connectivity from Parkside and Woodside to the fitness center and café. Each bridge will feature decorative railings, new lighting and excellent views of the restored stream channel. The stream bed restoration was completed earlier this year by Warfel Construction and recently recognized as an “Excellence Winner” in specialty landscaping by the Association of Builders and Contractors for Eastern Pennsylvania.

“We are excited about this opportunity to create a landscape that provides added outdoor enjoyment for our residents,” says Rick Crotinger, Director of Facilities. “This is truly history in the making.”

“We feel a connection with the Rydal team based on shared values and a true interest in completing this project in the best interest of the community and its residents,” says Brad Shulenberger, Director of Facility Services for Warfel Construction.

These enhancements are coming to fruition through donations from residents and team members. Since the 2017 campaign launch, $550,000 in gifts and pledges has been secured. These generous investments are being directed to the two bridges, walking loops, a newly- landscaped patio area for the Joseph C. Scott Medical Center and decorative benches.

A total of $600,000 in donations is being sought, according to Lynn Johnson-Porter, Vice President of Philanthropy. “We are extremely grateful to the benefactors who are making personal investments in the beauty of Rydal Park,” says Lynn. “Contributions can be a very touching way to honor the memory of a loved one or pay tribute to a friend or family members. Rydal Park

residents and team members are extremely generous, and this campaign serves as an example of their commitment. Campaign planning has been guided by Leadership Circle members Mona Ballard, Richard Drach, Joan Gotwals, Lorraine Pruitt and Bill Schwarzschild.”

Temperatures may be dropping, but progress in building Rydal Waters is picking up steam.

“We’re right on schedule,” says Sarah Jolles, Executive Director of Sales & Marketing, “and we’re looking forward to the grand opening this spring.”

Since the official groundbreaking in May, the much-anticipated expansion of Rydal Park is transforming from concept to reality. Situated in the heart of Abington Township on 33 beautiful acres tucked back from York Road, this maintenance-free neighborhood will feature 84 cottages that provide a single-family lifestyle, with the promise of future care, if ever needed.

Thoughtfully designed to incorporate today’s most sought-after amenities, Rydal Waters features two-bedroom, two-bathroom cottages with 1,750 to 2,400 square feet of open concept-style living space, stunning appointments, premium finishes and two-car garages. The neighborhood also features a modern clubhouse with cocktail lounge and event space, fitness center (with state-of-the-art equipment, personal trainer and classes), heated outdoor swimming pool, fire pit, walking trails and an enclosed dog park. Rydal Waters and Rydal Park residents will enjoy reciprocal access to each other’s amenities, a significant benefit for all.

The extraordinary care that went into planning Rydal Waters extends to the selection of partners whose outstanding expertise and commitment to the project have fueled its success. “So many partners deserve mention and thanks,” Sarah says. “They’ve really been key to making Rydal Waters a reality.” Those partners include Warfel Construction, Stewart & Conners Architects, Citizens Bank and Baker Tilly, among others.

Still, there’s another vital component to building a community from the ground up: the people.

To date, nearly 50 Charter Member households have selected their Rydal Waters cottages. Sarah sees them as founders of a remarkable new community. “I've been able to witness this neighborhood take shape,” she says, “seeing neighbors grow together as a group.” That group includes teachers, business leaders, small business owners — some retired, some not.

But despite their diversity, Rydal Waters Charter Members have important things in common. “They’re engaged. They're fun,” she says, “and they’ve seen the benefits of being proactive, shaping their own plans.”

A number of them, Sarah says, have parents living in Life Plan communities, giving them firsthand understanding of the tremendous relief proactive planning provides, to both the residents and their loved ones. “I’m doing this — in this beautiful place — because I’m excited to make my own plan,” says Charter Member Marilyn Hagy, “not be the recipient of someone else’s plan.”

Charter Member Terri Lewis puts it this way: “I’m making this move to maintain my independence and eliminate home maintenance,” she says. “I’m doing it now so that I won't burden those I love later.”

As Sarah has gotten to know the founding residents of Rydal Waters, she appreciates another important aspect they share. “I’ve come to realize what pioneering spirits they are,” she says. “They’re part of a select group who will shape this neighborhood, and their excitement is contagious!”

One of those Charter Members, Stan Singer, describes the anticipation: “We want to be a part of something new and vibrant,” he says. “We’re doing it because we believe in the power of community, especially as we get older.”

While openings are still available at Rydal Waters, they’re not projected to last long — especially as construction continues between now and this spring’s grand opening. Interested parties can enjoy virtual tours online at ExploreRydalWaters.org, along with a gallery of current construction photos documenting progress of the project. On-site tours are also available by appointment (weather permitting), and a model cottage will be available for walk-through this spring. As more people hear about Rydal Waters, those tours will fill quickly — partially due to curiosity, but mostly due to the exceptional value being offered.

“Making this kind of proactive move is a smart thing to do,” says Charter Member Bill Fonner. “We chose Rydal Waters because they do it best.”

With Spring on the Way, the Rydal Waters Project is Taking Root

I WAS PRIVILEGED TO BE ASKED TO TAKE ON THIS PROJECT. IT’S BEEN AN HONOR AND AN INSPIRATION TO EXPERIENCE WHAT STARTED AS HOUSES BLOSSOM INTO A COMMUNITY.

Hunger Rising Among the Senior PopulationHow Presby is helping seniors eat healthier and lose weight

After receiving a grant from the W.W. Smith Charitable Trust and several other family foundations, Presby’s Inspired Life created the Cupboards of Care program. More than 73 percent of residents in Presby’s sponsored Affordable Housing communities

report annual incomes below $10,000 a year. The goal is to help mitigate food insecurity and to provide financial support for individuals across the Affordable Housing communities so the residents may purchase fresh produce and lean meats. Presby’s mission has always been to help provide better lives for older adults across the region. Since 2016, Cupboards of Care has served more than 200 older adults, and just this past quarter, residents purchased more than 2,500 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables.

For more information about Cupboards of Care, please visit PresbysInspiredLife.org.

As the holidays are celebrated, and families are gathering together to eat delicious meals with all of the fixings, I wanted to take a moment to shine

a light on a real crisis in the city I have called home for more than 70 years — food insecurity among seniors.

Throughout my life, I have always done what it takes to try and make ends meet, but when you live on a fixed income, like many older adults across Philadelphia do, food insecurity is a very real thing. In fact, according to the Philadelphia Corporation for Aging, between 2015 and 2018, hunger among people aged 60 and over in the city rose from 11 to 12.25 percent, an increase from 32,000 to 38,000 people. Studies show that older people who can’t afford food, especially healthy ones, are much more likely to be sick, obese and to have fallen in the last year. I was one of those statistics.

One of my passions is to cook, but for most of my life, I struggled to buy healthy foods to make decent meals for myself. However, in 2016, that all changed for me, thanks to the Cupboards of Care program provided by my Affordable Housing community. I live at Mary Field Apartments on the Presby’s Inspired Life 58th Street campus. The Cupboards of Care program is an initiative that provides older adults with monthly gift cards to use at area grocery stores. I have always been mindful of my budget and disciplined to stick to my list of food necessities, but with the help of these monthly gift cards, I am now able to purchase more healthy foods, including fruits, vegetables and lean meats. In addition to the gift cards, the Cupboards of Care program includes educational cooking sessions with chefs who teach me and others how to use different foods, which have allowed me to be more adventurous in my eating habits.

About Cupboards of Care

For example, I am now buying and eating squash and asparagus, and I even make faux mashed potatoes with turnips!

Since I started in the Cupboards of Care program, I have lost more than 40 pounds and have lowered my blood pressure significantly. I enjoy cooking more than ever and now love to make healthy meals for my neighbors — some have come to rely on my skills in the kitchen!

I’ve also discovered that food lasts much longer when you prepare meals at home instead of going out to just pick up something like fast food. For me, it’s all about eating right and staying away from unhealthy foods now. The weight loss has been an amazing blessing for me, but the most important benefit of being able to live a healthier lifestyle is spending time with my 29 grandchildren. As the holidays quickly approach, I am counting my blessings and am grateful for the opportunity to live a healthier lifestyle so I can be around for my family and continue to be a valuable contributor in my community.

The Team Member Crisis Fund: New program helps ensure the best life possible for team members

When team members face an unexpected crisis, where can they turn for help? Loved

ones, friends, clergy? The answer is “yes,” but a new program unveiled this fall provides support and assurances as well.

The Team Member Crisis Fund offers emergency funds to cover food, clothing and shelter for those encountering natural disasters and unforeseen personal tragedies. Full- and part-time team members can apply for assistance for themselves, their spouses and legal dependents.

Generous donations from team members via payroll deduction or paid time off fuel this unique fund, established by the Office of Human Resources for Presby’s partner, HumanGood. “The Fund illustrates our commitment to ensuring the best life possible for those who serve our residents,” says Troy Keach, Vice President of Human Resources.

The Office of Human Resources and the Office of Philanthropy will work hand in hand to promote the Team Member Crisis Fund. “I feel privileged to serve an organization that cares for team members in such an impactful manner,” says Lynn Johnson-Porter, Vice President of Philanthropy.

Since the Fund’s establishment in October, more than 50 HumanGood East team members have signed up. That total reflects 100 percent participation from team members of three Affordable Housing communities and the Office of Philanthropy.

Any team member who needs assistance or wishes to help is encouraged to contact their community Human Resources coordinator or the Office of Philanthropy. Find more information at PresbysInspiredLife.org/Ways-To-Give.
