White Ribbon Day

The first activity was to attend the Lachlan Shire - The Heart of NSW Aboriginal Advisory Committee/Police Aboriginal Consultative Committee in Condobolin. This was the first occasion where all the students were able to meet each other for the first time. The second activity was to attend a camp at the Penrith Panthers and a tour of their training facility. This year police from the NSW Central West PD took the students that were participating in this years Active Citizenship Program to an event called Sticks to Stadium. The students spent several days at the Penrith Panthers, receiving a guided tour of their Rugby League Academy, trying to keep there eyes on the ball whilst trying to play aqua golf, and attending a cultural experience at Muru Mittigar Ltd, where they learnt about bush tucker, tractional tools, the different nations and tribes, different types of traditional music, learnt how to dance and the law of the didgeridoo. The students and police finished the camp by attending the Penrith Panthers vs. Cronulla Sharks NRL game. They all had to hold the banners as the players ran out of the tunnel and onto the field. After the match they were able to meet the Panthers' getting their Panthers’ merchandise signed . The third activity that the students attended was at Condobolin with Senior Constable Daniel Greef to sit in on a Lachlan Shire council meeting. The students also had a discussion with the Mayor of Condobolin John Medcalf in regards to what it is to be an active citizen and watched a small film set around World War II . The fourth activity involved the students attended heading back to Condobolin where they were taken to significant places for the Wiradjuri nation, in and around Condobolin. These places consisted of Aboriginal burial sites, the burial site of two Wiradjuri kings and the Mirri.

Year 7 are currently studying Place and Liveability in Geography,

focusing on waste.

During a recent Community Access visit to the Return and Earn the stu-dents cashed in their recycled bot-tles and cans. The money earned

from their recycling efforts provided funds toward their weekly Food Technology class. They are currently learning about Spain and

created some delicious Spanish cuisine (pictured left).

Wear It Purple

Friday August 31 is “Wear it Purple Day”. It sends the simple message that everyone has the right to be proud of who they are.

The theme for 2018, “Empower Together”, reminds us that we have the power to make Parkes High a safe, supportive place for all students.

In support of “Wear it Purple Day” on Friday August 31, wear something purple; show that everyone is accepted at Parkes High School. Show everyone that diversity is OK.

Just remember to wear your WHS compliant black leather shoes.

Netball Schools Cup Finals On 8 August 2018, three Parkes High teams travelled across to Orange to compete in the Netball Schools Cup Finals. With a 7/8 Girls team, 9/10 Girls team, and 9/10 Boys team making it through from their local gala day held in Parkes last term. The 7/8 Girls team were very competitive, winning 3 of their games over the day, unfortunately just not enough to make the Grand Final. Stand outs for the day were Teagan Smede and Olivia Dolbel working meticulously in the shooting circle, Maely Macgregor had a strong game in defence and Julia Dunn blitzed her way up and down the centre court. The 9/10 Girls narrowly missing out on a Grand Final spot finishing in 3rd place . The girls were competitive all day, often only missing the win by a couple of goals. Jordyn Chapple and Ella Morrissey were strong in defence, with Holly McColl stepping out of her comfort zone to control the game from the centre court. Annalise Maier, Amelia Green and Gracie Jones worked the shooting circle effortlessly all day. The boy’s team came away with well-earned knowledge on the game of netball. Having a win that kept the other team scoreless, unfortunately not enough to get to the Grand Final on the day. Some stand out performances by Harrison Macgregor and Christopher Cox in centre court. Ty Logan found his calling in defence, time and time again putting it to those taller than him. Jackson Guy, an all-rounder for the day, including an outstanding ability to work in the shooting circle and sink goals with Lachlan Hando. A big thankyou to our talented umpires that travelled across with us, Jolie Norman and Alex Williams. A fun day was had by all!

Capture, Connect and Contribute

Welcome to this edition of the Parkes High School newsletter. There is always much to report and I am pleased to say we can again outline for you a suite of activities around the central idea of connecting, contributing and growing as group of people intricately linked to our school.

O Day: We have introduced and trialled the concept of O Day – geared toward reorientating our student body and staff intentions in the same direction and around important tenants of PBL( Positive Behaviour Learning), a dignity and respect charter for students, anti-bullying and other such matters. From all reports it appears that our students adopted the concept as an important one and I wish to congratulate our staff and students for getting involved with what will be a valuable affirmative action measure that will do much to support academic achievement.

Teaching Success: I would commend all parents to view an episode of Insight “Teaching Success” available from the SBS website. The episode outlines the success of a school who focused on both wellbeing and academic success for students. The backstory of the focus school is similar to ours and I believe the focus this year gives much encouragement for connection, growth and contribution. The adage of happy students are engaged students runs deeply and so does the importance of staff connecting with students in a wellbeing framework. The program the basis of our development day for staff this term was warmly received by many staff on the day. I again recommend it as good viewing for any parent wanting to delve into the broader philosophy of promoting wellbeing of the student body as the most integral element of switched on students.

Future Directions: By the time we publish this edition we will have also conducted our Future Directions night for Year 10 students and I am sure it will prove to be an important part of the selection of subjects in Year 11 and 12 for our next group of future senior students.

Anti Bullying Ambassadors: Our Anti-bullying Ambassador Program is growing in strength and we inducted our Year 7-11 students into the program last Friday. We were fortunate to have Ms Stacey Kelly from Northparkes Mines speak to the assembly about the importance of anti-bullying and the central idea of promoting the key idea of looking after each other. Congratulations to Mr Chris Dumaine who has agreed to be the staff member responsible for the Dump on Bullying Ambassador Program.

Gifted and Talented Program: Our Librarian, Ms Dawson, has been busily preparing another Gifted Education Day for students in Term 3. Our students will join with students from our Henry Parkes Learning Community for what promises to be another great day for our students.

Trial HSC: Our Year 12 students are about to commence their trial examinations and I encourage all students to engage with their teachers and each other in designing a review or study program. I wish all our students the very best for the examinations.

Parkes Show: Our show display is in the capable hands of Mrs Aleta Pay this year. I am looking forward to the excellent showcase of student work for the display.

External Validation: Our External Validation process is finalised and the team and I will be meeting with our Principal Peer next Tuesday to review the external assessment of the package of evidence sets provided. I am looking forward to the outcome of this process and intend in the near future to take our P & C through the outcomes of the process.

A couple of reminders about in the future activities which may require your support:

Holidays: During the next holidays we are hoping that the efforts of our Choices Flooring team will see some major recarpeting of key areas in the school. This effort is the culmination of a lot of preparatory work and I am looking forward to the outcome for our school.

Landscaping and General Working Bee: Please keep in mind in the near future the intention of the School and our P & C to have a working bee around the school to give the whole place a general makeover.
