Workplace Diversity Workplace Diversity As an ethnic librarians organization CALA’s commitment to promote diversity is embod- ied in its mission, goals, and strategic plan; CALA members work across the United States and have contributed to the success of building a diverse workforce; CALA members have helped to achieve cultural competency in workplace and promote li- brary services to all users. Introduction Introduction Established in 1973, CALA is a profes- sional organization with over 35 years of demonstrated commitment and con- tributions to diversity. It aims to en- hance communication among Chinese American librarians, to collaborate with librarians of all cultural back- grounds on the discussion and promo- tion of library services to all in the United States, and to take a leadership role in global reach with special em- phasis on Asian and Pacific Rim coun- tries. CALA members meet at national conference programs in conjunction with the ALA and also at local chapter level every year. CALA 21 CALA 21 st st Century Century Librarian Seminar Librarian Seminar Series Program Series Program Launched in 2006, this program aims at promoting collaboration and exchange between Chinese and American librarians and ad- dressing important issues of li- brarianship Co-sponsored by CALA and many academic and cultural in- stitutions, to date, CALA has sent 12 teams of over 45 librari- ans, and delivered more than 100 lectures in 8 cities. The lec- ture series are highly recog- nized by librarians in China ALA past, current, and incom- ing presidents (Barbara Ford, Loriene Roy, Jim Rettig, CALA members are making global reaching efforts to facilitate the ac- cess to information and technology to all people. As an ethnic librarians organization, international outreach has become an important component of CALA's strategic advantage. Its diversity and international outreach initiatives have created a strong pres- ence in Asian and Pacific Rim Coun- tries in recent years.
